  1. QUOTE (Buehrlesque @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 04:00 PM) I don't understand how moving Avi as part of any deal would somehow entice another team. As for CarGo, I was a proponent of acquiring him before, and the Sox still have a desperate need for an OF/DH, as there is nothing at all in the minor league pipeline. But at this point, he'd have to come at a steep discount (no one of significance prospect-wise going to Colorado). If the White Sox still have Avi in their org it's going to be hard to upgrade their corner OF slots because they're not likely to send him back to AAA and he's a major weakness right now. He's still worth giving playing time to, but not if you're trying to compete. If you could move him somewhere else, you don't have to worry about hurting him by benching him and he could still have opportunities to try to improve his game as an everyday player.
  2. QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 03:56 PM) Tulo who makes like $20 million you can talk about. Who is hurt a lot. Has played 86 games. But you dismiss Cargo and his 2 yr $37 million. He's hurt a lot too but has played 88 games this season. CarGo fits a need and can move Avi as part of the deal maybe. Wonder if Tulo moving to the DH spot would help with the health thing.
  3. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 03:52 PM) I feel like with his defense, Anderson won't be an MLB SS. Maybe 2B. At least on the errors he's improved a lot this year. Hard to judge other things for minor leaguers but we're seeing clear, legitimate improvement in that part of his game.
  4. No game thread yet, but Eaton at DH, Shuck in CF.
  5. Flowers starting again today.
  6. QUOTE (sammy esposito @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 03:09 PM) 30 million! Sox are use to getting their pitchers cheap. Samardzija turned down 5/$75 from the Cubs last year supposedly. Even though he's not matching last year's performance he's still on a path towards a 5/$100 deal, maybe give or take a bit. If you want him for 3 years you need to massively overpay him for those 3 years to make the deal good enough that he sacrifices the last couple guaranteed years. Basically, it's just easier to give him the 5 years.
  7. QUOTE (sammy esposito @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 03:03 PM) Now that Shark is pitching more like we thought he could. What will it cost the sox for a 3 year deal. If he pitches tomorrow I believe that is the scenario. 2 more years, or $30 mil a year?
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 03:02 PM) I wonder if Theo wouldn't mind moving a couple of these prospects before they become exposed as frauds. I would guess Baez's value is down. Castro could have netted more. A couple of these others, the value most likely will go down unless the Cubs are really lucky. I'm still surprised they didn't move Baez over a year ago. He had "guy who may turn into something long term but is going to struggle a lot short term" written all over him. You could see that in his approach in AA just by watching. If he made contact the ball seemed like it never landed but there wasn't a pitch he wouldn't swing at. His power is so legit I could still see him becoming a decent big leaguer somewhere, but he seems like a major, multi-year overhaul project.
  9. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 02:53 PM) Well Hamels wouldn't necessarily be sacrificing things long-term, as they would have him for 4 more seasons after this one. But they could pull off something similar by signing Price in the offseason without sacrificing any of their young offensive pieces.
  10. QUOTE (Dunt @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 02:52 PM) He's a nice bat, but he doesnt have a position. He wont stick behind the plate and I dont think he has the athleticism for the OF. Hard to think the bat is enough to nab a 26 year old LHP that is consistently putting up 3 WAR seasons and has another 3-4 years of control. Oh, and Jose actually has 5.3 years of team control remaining.
  11. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 02:55 PM) I agree, but Kluber is the only one of those three who can be considered one of baseball's best. Think of it like a team beating Rodon for the other guys. He's more likely than the other guys on our staff to have a bad day, but you're certainly pretty happy if you get past him.
  12. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 02:51 PM) I guess another thing we could think about is what we would have to add with Shark to get Schwarber back. That is the type of deal that helps the offense now and for the future. I can't imagine the Cubs giving him up in a deal centered around a rental.
  13. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 02:50 PM) Ok, I'm part of the whole optimist/don't sell yet movement, but calling those 3 "3 of the best pitchers in baseball" is just silly. I clearly am the pessimist right now and those were some seriously impressive arms we just beat, including last year's cy young winner. Yes, great arms can have bad days, great rotations can have bad weeks, Kluber has not been anywhere near what he was last year, but the Indians still have one of the top 5 starting rotations in the AL by WAR which is the same thing we were talking about the White Sox leading the league in last week. Beating up on those guys deserves some credit.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 02:45 PM) One thing I hate about the WAR stat is the idea that one guy who has a 3.0 WAR is somehow equal to 3 guys who have 1.0 WARs. Needing 3 different guys to make up what one guy is doing, puts the one team at an advantage because they are only needing one guy to get those numbers, allowing gains from the other players that aren't being accounted for. However...if your team is being held down by having multiple guys who are below average players and you have little depth to replace them, plugging 3 guys worth 1 WAR into your lineup would make your team better than 1 guy with a 3 WAR. And if you were able to take the extra $9 million you spent and find another tolerable player...well now all of a sudden the "multiple tolerable players" is a huge upgrade.
  15. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 02:43 PM) Question; Is Quintana worth Schwarber? Straight up? Would rather have Q. Schwarber as a centerpiece of a multiplayer package? Might work.
  16. QUOTE (spiderman @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 02:39 PM) There's no way they are going to trade him. I don't think the Cubs are going to make a major move. I think they are more likely to find a veteran/stop-gap type who would help, but wouldn't cost them a premium prospect. I do just wonder a bit about how much of an impact they think "making the playoffs" this year would make for them coming out of their rebuilding. They sure seem unlikely to sacrifice any of their long-term pieces, especially since they'll have plenty of money to fill holes on the FA market again, but "making the playoffs even for a game" would really cement the team as on its way up for that fanbase. It might be worth a lot for them to be more aggressive than we'd think.
  17. QUOTE (AlSoxfan @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 12:19 PM) Oh come on he's 23..this is really his first yr. I think he gets better It's entirely reasonable that he could get better, but no one is going to trade anything of value for him on the hopes that he will. He may eventually turn into a solid player, but guys who struggle early and get replaced rapidly because a team wants to win now are common around this league. If you have an opening on your roster for an OF you can find plenty of guys who can be what Avi is right now. He's also a first-year arbitration eligible player this fall so his salary is going to go up...which means the clock is ticking rapidly only him. 2016 he's still somewhat cheap if you pick him up, but if he struggles during 2016 he's exactly where Viciedo was last offseason salary-wise. He has exactly as much trade value as Viciedo had at the end of 2013, when the White Sox kept pretending they were going to successfully trade him somewhere and then never did.
  18. QUOTE (AlSoxfan @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 12:14 PM) Yes, I agree, plus it would make Avi. a trade chip for whatever he may be worth (nothing).
  19. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 26, 2015 -> 10:03 PM) Not much? Have you looked at the fWAR numbers for the guys we traded away? Samardzija 2.5, Phegley + Bassitt + Semien 2.4, and salary isn't exactly even. Ravelo back to health and hitting again but still in the minors and a ways away. I'd take that back for him happily.
  20. QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 26, 2015 -> 05:35 PM) in that case, some team can trade for him. No one will want him. He has ~0 trade value. He's in the same position as Viciedo last year, a guy you could get on the waiver wire who has shown nothing in the big leagues and is about to get more expensive. We can pretend he has trade value but he doesn't. If you're rebuilding, he's the kind of guy you claim if your coaches like him. You play them & see what happens because the worst thing that happens is you lose games. If we want to compete next year, barring a major change in his style of play over the last 2 months of 2015, he can't be the starting RF. Hell, if we want to make a legit WC run, either him or LaRoche, take your pick which one you want to bench.
  21. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 26, 2015 -> 09:51 PM) Except the concept of a loyal, faithful fan base that can wait out a 7 year rebuilding process (anywhere other than Cubs, Red Sox and Cardinals) is pretty much non-existent. Except we're already at 6 years without playoffs and below .500 in year 7.
  22. You either have to make this team better or you have to trade Samardzija. Pick one. They're not winning if you don't make them better, and if you don't think you can make them good enough then a draft pick is such a weak compensation after all we gave up to get that pitcher. You want to give me a million dollar + salary as a GM I'll risk it on making that decision. You can fire me if I'm wrong and I promise to take the retirement plan and not be that mad.
  23. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 26, 2015 -> 04:53 PM) Winter League no problem. How about this. If you really think this team is in it this year, why not use Micah as your top trade chip? Sanchez seems like he might be able to actually hold down 2b and be strong defensively, which would leave Micah without a position anyway. Micah could potentially bring back a strong return that could fill a position for a full year, and you'd almost certainly find a better hitter than what Micah would be coming up as a rookie.
  24. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 26, 2015 -> 04:49 PM) Blah please. You can play baseball all year round in winters leagues . You can practice defense while DHing too. If you want to get better get reps all year round or you end up a permanent DH , traded or a guy who never finds a spot because of it and his weak arm. I think Micah still has star potential but only if his D can improve a lot and it won't ever be as good as Sanchez' because of his arm. So you think Micah has all star potential, needs to work on his D, but you're willing to sacrifice a month of work on his D in game situations. See the problem?
  25. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 26, 2015 -> 04:48 PM) At least until we acquire Raburn. He'd be about the worst possible acquisition the white sox will make. He wouldn't get to play against White Sox pitching! Without our pitching staff his numbers would be LaRoche like.
