Giants picked up Hunter Pence at the 2012 deadline and he was a key part of a WS winning team. 2013 Red Sox picked up Jake Peavy and Matt Thornton.

If they believe they're really competitive this season but they don't want to give up anything other than money long term it generally makes some sense. Will the Rockies finally move him to save payroll with a weak return? Beats me, they haven't done so yet.
