QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 02:48 PM) Hasn't history shown that deadline deals rarely pay off? KC did get Cueto and Zobrist, probably about as good as they can do, at the cost of 5 arms. If they don't win the WS, they pretty much shot their wad. Depends on how you classify paying off. When only 1 team wins the WS every year, if you make a deadline deal and base it only on whether teams win the WS, it's not likely to pay off, because winning the WS is tough even if you do everything right. However, there are certainly examples of deadline deals playing key roles in the WS. Immediately coming to mind - the 2011 Cardinals totally overhauled their entire bullpen in the Rasmus deal at the deadline and that paid off hugely. Giants picked up Hunter Pence at the 2012 deadline and he was a key part of a WS winning team. 2013 Red Sox picked up Jake Peavy and Matt Thornton.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 02:42 PM) He's not been struggling at all... And what good hitter are you going to go get without taking on a decent-sized contract? By the "Swallow the contract" phrase there I was referring to LaRoche. The White Sox will take on contracts from other teams, but they won't "buy players out for large amounts", based on historical standards. Sorry if that was unclear.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 02:32 PM) Don't mind them clearing their system for rentals. If I were in their spot, with Gordon hitting FA this year, I would too.

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 02:32 PM) Nice move to replace Chris Getz...that is their 2B right? Infante's been their 2b for a while now. I don't know that Getz is even int he league any more?

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 02:30 PM) On an admittedly weak offensive team, he's actually been one of our most consistent hitters. Since June 1 he's hitting .224 with a .589 OPS. If you don't care whether you win this season that's fine. If you're trying to win right now, that's a hole that can be filled, at least temporarily, without having to swallow $20 million or so on the contract of someone struggling.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 02:22 PM) just out of curiosity, where does Avi play if we get Cargo? Send him down for a month?
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 01:56 PM) Does that not sound like Tulowitzki? Who they just received a first round draft pick for, among others, along with $50 million in salary relief? You think they are going to turn around and dump Cargo to us for nothing now? Tulo has been viewed a lot more favorably than CarGo for several years, IMO, and as noted in the other threads a fair number of people say that's a huge risk for the Jays.
-
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 01:54 PM) What does that have to do with us and CarGo? His road numbers are uninspiring, he has a bad contract, and he has an injury history. Pass. I certainly wouldn't give up Adams for him. I wouldn't either.
-
If they believe they're really competitive this season but they don't want to give up anything other than money long term it generally makes some sense. Will the Rockies finally move him to save payroll with a weak return? Beats me, they haven't done so yet.

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 01:44 PM) I think Avi can be a productive DH for this team moving forward. The difference between him and Tank or Beckham is that he has more offensive raw tools. Avi does not belong in right field. I think the raw tools of those other guys were just fine as well. None of them had approaches at the plate or thought processes or adaptability to match, and when they couldn't overhaul their games they washed out. If we're thinking about him as a DH...just note, Viciedo at age 23 and 24 outhit Garcia at age 23 and 24. Avi needs to make a serious improvement that the other guys were unable to make. And for a DH...the DH slot still does hit better than the RF slot, on average, so just to get up to average he needs to improve even more with the approach at the plate.

Blue Jays interested in Quintana or Samardjiza
Balta1701 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
This whole thread has reminded me how little the A's got for Donaldson in that trade. Anywho. -
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 01:27 PM) Only way he isn't positioned to be their in a fall back scenario, is if the Sox have already decided they aren't trading Shark. He'll start in Louisville tonight. If today were the 31st, you might be right, but not with 3 days still to go.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 01:23 PM) I would bet 5 bucks that EJ is in Boston. And if he isn't, that he is in a place where he can get their pretty darn quickly. I would take that bet.

Do the Blue Jays even have anything that gets to Quintana level remaining? -
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 01:13 PM) Probably not, but not exactly what the Sox need...another LHP. Not saying I hate the offer (altho Shark gives us a much better chance of actually getting into the playoffs than Norris or EJ), I just think the Sox need bats if they're gonna trade Shark. I'd still take a pitcher back...but it better be a really good pitcher. A "really, they gave that guy up for a rental?" kinda pitcher.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 12:59 PM) Should I bump the thread where I predicted Hector Santiago to be a future stud/starter after his first relief outing with the White Sox? To be fair...borderline all-star/replacement this year isn't half bad.
-
Of course he starts tonight.
-
QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 10:13 PM) Shouldn't we know where to pitch De Aza? Wasn't he always pretty streaky with us? Get him up when he's going well and he can hit pretty darn well.
-
He's out. I say > 5 minutes.
-
QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 09:29 PM) It seems like we don't want to win this game at times, but it sure seems like Boston doesn't want this one. Boston fan friends don't remember the last game they did look like they wanted.
-
Jose shoulda had that
-
QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 07:39 PM) Ya I seen it hit his leg but not intentionally and it was minor. I'm sure this one's a rule involving the "contact with the ump" thing, even inadvertent contact you're gone.
-
QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 07:38 PM) Sox got a break he said nothing to ump. Ump got hit by his helmet after he took it off. That's on Napoli, that's the rule.
-
Napoli dropped the helmet, it bounced into the Ump's leg.
-
Napoli tossed rapidly after the called strike 3. Farrell about to be tossed also.
