QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 10:52 PM) If you want people to take you (not you personally) seriously: 1) stop the hyperbole. The world isn't going to be underwater next year. tell the truth. When you lie, outrageously, it makes you look bad. 2) Act like you believe what you say. Stop driving when you don't have to, stop flying when you don't have to. You don't need people flying private jets to exotic locations to scheme how you can get more money out of the US and say its because of 'climate change'. Teleconference anyone? 3) If everyone isn't going to do it (China, Russia, Indoa, etc.), just the US screwing up their economy isn't going to solve anything. Except screwing up the US economy. 4) Stop falsifying data. There may be truth to the data, but messing it up to make it seem more extreme makes you look like liars. Also stop cherry-picking data. Present it all. Make you models open for people to see how you get there instead of just saying 'trust us'. because nobody does. 1. I'd like to say that most scientists do. I can't verify that everyone does, but "large scale ice sheet collapses within the next century" are totally reasonable. 2. Go bike home in the rain as much as I do and then tell me that again. 2a. big part of the problem? one person doing that does very, very little. The real setup should be that people have to pay for what they're actually emitting, and thus people get to choose whether it's worth it to them. 3. That's why there are international efforts to set up agreements. Unfortunately, getting the U.S. on board has been one of the biggest problems. 4. I wish you'd apply those same standards of "stop falsifying data" to people who deny climate change, because the 2000 page IPCC reports blow those away. 4a. Virtually all models do get published and made public. There's just a learning curve to figure out the code and most people can't be bothered to learn how those work.

Frankie Montas to join Sox for Double Header Friday

QUOTE (shipps @ Jul 17, 2015 -> 10:40 AM) I dont know if its been mentioned before but I heard Keith Law give a pretty tough scouting report on Montas yesterday. He said a lot of the things that have been mentioned here before like him not having the ability to be a starter in the league because he doesnt have the pin point control that would be needed. Also he said that if he isnt throwing the 100+ he will get lit up because he doesnt have a ton of movement, ala what happened in the all star game. He also mentioned that he isnt ready for the big leagues right now. FWIW, a guy who I'm 99% sure had a triple-digit fastball that was "way too straight" and "not pinpoint control" was Max Scherzer. He came up as a 100 mph guy, learned to take a little bit of velocity off that fastball in exchange for more movement, and well. Montas has a lower K-rate than Scherzer did but an equal or better walk rate, and coming out of the DSL teams not surprising he's a bit more raw. He's not ready for prime time yet and we all know that, but big difference between that and "not having the ability to be a starter in this league". If you've got a 100 mph fastball, taking a bit off of it to 96 with better control/movement and still having 99 in your pocket when you need to strike a guy out in the 7th inning is a solid recipe. Just takes time and learning. -

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 07:45 PM) If the Sox potentially see him as a reliever long-term, maybe other teams do too. What if the Sox were showcasing him to package him with Samardzija to a team that needs a starter and another reliever? That would certainly have to interest Houston and Toronto into giving something real up. If I'm trading with the White Sox and I"m in competition, I would very, very much prefer to trade for Putnam or Petricka rather than Montas. Or if you're that desperate for a closer, Robertson. Get someone who is at least partially proven. Why would a team in contention trading for Samardzija want to break in a rookie over the last 2 months of the season? I mean, it worked for Jenks but seriously? And the White Sox, if they're trading people away, would be silly to trade away guys they control for 6.5 years. What are they going to get back that makes them younger and more long-term set up than a guy they already control? -
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 05:37 PM) Yeah, It does look different. Maybe they didn't want to do a big 9ft CGI monster looking Apocalypse. Have to wait and see with the trailer. Early version but someone recorded this at ComicCon.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 04:44 PM) That's how all the global warming, I mean climate change, proponents talk. WHile it is possible NYC may be under water in 100 years, it doesn't have the same urgency as saying NYC UNDERWATER BEFORE THE DECADE IS OVER IF YOU DON'T ACT NOW! It did say that you would have a lot of waterways that normally dont' freeze get some ice cover, but nothing as dire as you first saw. The sad things? 1. The people pushing that "Ice age coming" article were mostly climate change deniers, because they're the ones who want you to believe that the sun is a bigger influence on climate than what's happening to the atmosphere. The people who know the climate science all sighed loudly and said "really, I have to f***ing deal with this again?" 2. "Climate Change" was a term popularized by a Republican pollster. It's actually more accurate, IMO, than Global Warming (Since some areas of the planet do actually get colder) but anyway. 3. We're already feeling the effects of climate change in a number of powerful ways that are costing people and governments a whole lot of money.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 03:45 PM) I get the feeling the Sox payroll has not hampered the team's bottom line at all this season and the Sox are comfortable keeping all the players they acquired. I get a gut feeling the front office thinks 5.5 out of the wild card chase is close enough to keep the team together. During their all-star break meetings, I can see the front office and Robin pointing to the exceptional starting pitching they've been getting and improved defense and them saying, "If we keep up this recent rate of winning we will get the wild card. Let's stay on course and make no changes." Makes too much sense to me. I would prefer dealing Shark immediately and seeing how the team does with Johnson as his replacement. But don't you all agree with me the Sox have made a business decision to stay with the same players and see if the team can grab a wildcard even though they are in last place in their own division? I think they'll hold for at least another week. If they keep winning like this it will be hard for them to really be in last place next week, they'd even have a shot at .500 and from there you're at least out of the pit. If the Royals and Cardinals give them a bloody nose this week and they take a step back down in the records, they might hold for a better offer but I don't think they'll seriously entertain the idea that they can hold onto Samardzija.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 03:52 PM) How about they just hire a professional broadcaster as the TV PBP guy? And then leave Stone next to him. It doesn't have to be an ex-player. Get a professional from somewhere. Someone doing post game work somewhere like a Wayne Randazzo or Mike Wills type. Just something I can't see this organization doing. Totally not them.

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 02:37 PM) All of this on the heels of that article the other day showing the Sox essentially last in baseball in TV ratings. As much as I personally love Hawk & Stoney together (and I think they've made great strides in the past couple of years to come together to produce a quality broadcast), there have got to be changes in the TV booth coming down the pike with horrible ratings like these to shake things up a bit. Given that the Cubs are seeing a big surge in ratings this year after low numbers last year, I think we can point to a much more effective way to get those ratings up.

So let's try it this way. The White Sox are well known to favor guys who have come through their franchise for various positions. Any ideas on who might be a good candidate to take any of those roles out of people who have been in the Sox organization at some point?

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 11:43 AM) Gonna go with yes, but not in a Sox uni. Not saying they trade him now but when he is able to hit open market, they won't pay what it'll take to keep him. I've been wondering what would happen if the White Sox started going up to Sale every offseason saying they'll add an extra $30 million to his deal if he agrees to give up another year of FA.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 15, 2015 -> 09:34 PM) After looking over the schedule, are we positive that Montas won't start one of Friday's games? Shark/Danks on Friday Quintana on Saturday Sale on Sunday Rodon on Monday Shark wouldn't go Tuesday on 3 days rest would he? Monday is an off day -
TT strikes out swinging on 4 pitches in his 2nd PA.
-
Davidson quick ground out to short on first pitch in his 2nd PA.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 15, 2015 -> 08:44 PM) That's not realistic. Brewers don't need Samardzija. Lucroy has an OBP of .631 this year. They won't let him go for a .631 value, and I, not a hero worshiper, don't like paying for past production. I like the way Flowers is working with these pitchers- framing and such. I was mistaken - it's 2.5 more years. Holy F***.
-
Andre Rienzo now pitching for the PCL. Having solid year in Marlins org.
-
Davidson struck out looking, TT with a solidly struck fly out to right.

Johnson struggling a bit here. Left a ball up in the first and a lefty drove it to right, RF had to go a long way to get it. 2 runners on here in the 2nd, getting a bit wild, finally seemed to refocus a bit after going 3-0 on the next guy, came back and struck him out. Hung a breaking ball and Guy hammered it foul, then struck out on next pitch. Topped out at 94, consistently at 92, but notably wild around the zone with the fastball and the curve ball. Announcers noticed how he's struggling with control both within and outside the zone.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 15, 2015 -> 06:58 PM) So what's with the mountains and no craters? So yeah....you've just identified basically the 2 biggest questions from day 1 data. There will be >100 scientific papers published on those subjects within the next decade. We're tossing out random ideas amongst the scientists on twitter and it's completely unexpecetd. It seems to require more heat more recently than anyone imagined given that there's no tidal forcing between Pluto and anything else. Maybe Charon forming impact was recent, within last 100 million years. Maybe we're not quite counting up all the energies correctly. Maybe Pluto has a much higher amount of Potassium, Uranium, and Thorium than similar rocky materials on Earth. We're now all thinking about "where could this recent heat come from" without really good answers yet.

QUOTE (kevo880 @ Jul 15, 2015 -> 06:04 PM) There it is. I know Montas has a fastball that hits triple digits, but everything that I have seen and read indicated it is extremely straight and flat. It would be great if he could be taught a 2 seamer or anything that could add some movement that would make it more difficult to hit since his secondary pitches are nothing to brag about. Well, he did just turn 22 and he's a guy who originally came from the Dominican Summer League, so international signing. He wouldn't be the first guy with a big arm who gradually learns how to take a couple mph off the fastball in exchange for some movement, and besides, there's time. It's not like they'd be crazy enough to call him up from AA.

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jul 15, 2015 -> 05:06 PM) Correct. I just think everyone thinks it is a bit of a bizzare choice over Erik Johnson who presumably could start one of the games. Montas could too, I suppose, but he doesn't even average 5.0 IP in the minors..so hard to expect him to go 5 in the bigs. Most likely, he'll be used in relief if needed. It also means it is likely Danks will get a start this weekend, as I am sure they're going to give Rodon as much time as possible for the blister to heal. Erik is going in the AAA All Star Game tonight, so he'd be unavailable on Friday. Presumably the org. therefore must want him pitching in that game. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 15, 2015 -> 04:37 PM) To be fair, this is exactly what the Sox did for the last DH. But Carroll is already in the minors so there would need to be someone else sent down as well? -
