  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 12:45 PM) The typical Sox MO is to bring guys in as a starter, and if they don't make it, convert them back to RP. They did it with both Addison Reed and Nate Jones. This one is untrue, Addy was the one guy we drafted highly as a closer and kept in that role. He made 2 starts in his entire time in the minors with the sox, both at Great Falls.
  4. QUOTE (SCCWS @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 12:42 PM) Agree that some players will move more to norm. We are seeing Beckham go the other way as well w more playing time. We also have been pretty free of major injuries but we should expect to lose some time as well. I discount the 6.5 and 3.5 because you have to factor in the number of teams we are behind as well as the games back. We should know by mid-July whether we will be buyers or sellers If Samardzija were actually pitching well and everyone else around him were crumbling you could make a case for moving him now to get a better return, but since he's been awful there's no harm in waiting on him to see if he puts together a couple non-terrible starts in a row before mid July.
  5. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 09:09 AM) resigned =/= fired Based on the police chief stating that this was indefensible and that he had 12 officers on site and 11 performed according to their training, this seems like one of those "if you don't resign you're going to be fired and that will look a lot worse if you try to get an additional job" moments. Also worth noting that had any of us done that to a 14 year old girl we'd be facing assault charges, so let's see if any of those are actually brought.
  6. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 09:19 AM) Unable to check platoon splits, but what are his splits against lefties? If they're good, he could be a platoon option at third with Beckham getting at bats at second. He has no numbers up this year, last year .677 OPS against lefties and .551 OPS against righties.
  7. QUOTE (LDF @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 11:18 AM) this was a discussion a couple of weeks ago when someone mention, "you always draft the BPA instead of need or anything else". also the philosophy of "BPA is the right way to run the org". so answer me this, when this whole term change??? That is with respect to the first round pick. I'm still generally ok with that philosophy.
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 10:07 PM) 17.2 IP and 26 k's for Putnam. That's crazy. Look for the split finger and still don't hit it. Another guy who matches up well against the Astros.
  9. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 09:51 PM) Given that this is still technically a winnable game, I'd rather give Webb an inning or two and see if the offense can actually score a run. I do want to see Geurra though, but about tonight seems like the right time. Webb is up.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 09:35 PM) While trying to compare the 2015 offense to the 2007 offense on Fangraphs I accidentally sorted "offensive fWAR 2007-2015". The White Sox have 81.2 fWAR on offense as a team since 2007. This is by FAR the worst in MLB. The nearest teams have more than 10 fWAR more than us. Our offensive production is worse than the Astros who have spent most of the time rebuilding and the Mariners who keep signing huge busts. The Red sox have 145 more fWAR than our offense over that 8.5 year span. They have 2.75x or so the amount of fWAR as us over that time span. Meanwhile we are #3 in pitching fWAR since then, with 70 more fWAR than the teams at the bottom and we are #29 out of 30 teams in fielding over that timespan (just had to check). So to summarize, since 2007: white Sox Pitching, near top of the league. Offense, baserunning, and fielding, 29th to 30th in MLB over that timespan.

  12. The white sox as a team have a -1.6 fWAR this year on offense.
  13. QUOTE (LDF @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 09:01 PM) re bold, some poster doesn't think there no luck. but i know what you are saying, i am saying if the team used, let say for this discussion, and all things being equal, the #5 pick for a player who may be asking for a bonus money that was equal to a higher round. the sox could have easily drafted him and use the remaining for way below slot picks. or better yet, selected players who can be of use for the system, even though it may not have been an elite player. and i am sure there are other possible recourse that smart men in the sox FO should have been able to come up with. But they did! They used their #7 pick for a guy who might ask for a lot of bonus money, a 3rd round talent, and they took some under-slot guys probably who they'd scouted in the slots surrounding it!
  14. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 09:12 PM) Walk............Loaded for Houston think they will tank like the Sox? Don't underestimate Rodon. They still have to hit him.
  15. That was not an impressive AB by Jose.
  16. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 08:44 PM) 4th time in 2015 Sox have bases loaded and do not score f***ing terrible. That's it?
  17. QUOTE (LDF @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 07:33 PM) if that was for me, i am not seeing things clearly.... with that. i am otta of here. i am still too pissed off. How about a more simple version: If you're pissed off about who a team drafts in rounds 4+ in the MLB draft you're not understanding how the game is played in the draft in this sport. It's ok to be pissed off about picks in the top round or maybe even top 2-3 rounds depending on whether you use the slot money. By the time you're in round 4 you're so far into the game of teams moving slot money around and players staying in school that some combination of scouting and luck becomes far more important.
  18. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 07:26 PM) If only Melky had been a "massive" upgrade. Sigh... You might have noted the sarcasm building in that sentence as it went on.
  19. That's his police chief describing his actions while announcing his resignation. For actions that were "indefensible" this thread has a lot of defense.
  20. QUOTE (LDF @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 07:10 PM) i don't know, i have been reading most of what has been written here and i am not impress. this draft, outside the pick of #1 and #7, was not a good draft. damn, i felt as the sox should have mailed in this draft. i guess if Fulmer signs, i guess that in itself is a successful draft. i also know that not having a #2 and #3 pick didn't help, esp with the slotted money. i am not going to include anyone into this, my little rant, but i felt all the hype leading to this draft was a waste. i could look at the best of this draft and concertate on that and look no further, trying to make the best of what happen today, but i won't. With the MLB Draft I do feel like it's important to remind people that "Taking the best player available at every pick" is a strategy that probably won't work out well for you because you won't be able to sign most of them. In that sense it is very, very different from drafts we're used to for other sports like the NFL or NBA where there's very little reason to pass on "Best player available". If your scouts can get a couple "diamonds in the rough" in those first 10 picks and at the same time you save yourself money to come away with 1 over-slot guy, you can set yourself up for the best possible draft. Especially since we gave away our 2nd and 3rd round picks to massively upgrade the big league team and successfully turn ourselves into a winning team through free agency, you take a look at the overall picture and hope you get 2-3 players out of the full thing, or at least 1.
  21. He's a lefty and it does get Gillaspie and LaRoche both out of the lineup against a lefty.
  22. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 03:38 PM) I think it was warranted. Maybe extreme for the circumstance, but i'm not going to second guess the guy in the heat of the moment sitting at my computer screen watching a video from afar. Cops have every right to defend themselves from people. People shouldn't be stupid towards cops and they won't get shot. Plain and simple. I dunno why we as society act all surprised in these situations. You don't the right to be free from response when you go up and threaten someone, cop or no cop. Do people have a right to defend themselves from cops if the cop acts aggressive towards them and they have previously done nothing wrong?
  23. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 03:26 PM) Just got around to viewing this. IMO the cop was overzealous in a typical napoleon-complex, authoritative dick cop way. People were running from him (has to be the explanation for the barrel role and the subsequent orders to the black kids on the sidewalk). And with the girls he was trying to get them to leave and they wouldn't and then they kept running their mouths. Is that worthy of being forced to the ground? No, but he's a dick cop who let his emotions get to him. He's to blame for riling things up, but when people respond stupidly to cops, they should expect potentially stupid/extreme reactions. The cop should absolutely be fined and suspended but termination seems extreme. As does any civil suit. That was a bunch of nothing and she didn't appear to be hurt at all. Regarding the gun situation, those kids were coming up from behind him quickly and screaming. All he was doing was trying to cuff someone who wasn't following his orders and then a crowd starts to gather and scream around him. He was outnumbered, regardless of the cops in the area, and I have zero qualms with him pulling out his gun. You'll notice he never aimed it at them but always kept it down to the ground. Balta, i'm not aware of any police protocol that requires a cop to be 100% certain he's going to use his weapon before he can take it out of the holster. It shouldn't be used as a show of force in most situations, but you can clearly tell the guy felt in danger because of his body language. He has that right. If you're stupid enough to charge a cop, you're stupid enough to get shot. Why don't people think that's a logical way for both parties to act? This is, once again, the media trying to capitalize on a white cop/black victim story when in reality it's a cop going a bit too far with a non-compliant person. I'm not saying you're 100% sure you're going to use it, but that you don't pull it out around people as a threat if the situation doesn't warrant shooting them.
  24. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 03:09 PM) You are being obtuse on purpose, I am sure. He is occupied on the ground trying to secure someone, and more than one guy start approaching him from the side/behind, surely not to ask if he needs to be hydrated or anything less threatening. ANYTHING could happen from being knocked over, to being hit, to an actual weapon to his own gun being removed from the holster while he is occupied. They should have just backed away. They have a camera rolling, the story will come out, get twisted, replayed from every angle with everyone's agenda attached to it, edited, lied about, shown entirely. the cop chose poorly from the beginning of that tape on, protecting himself from a potential threat was not the worst of what he did. I'm 100% serious. Every single thing I've ever heard about pulling a gun on people is that you pull a gun because you're ready to fire, not as a threat to scare people away.
