QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 21, 2015 -> 01:53 PM) Why is it a problem? People shouldnt have to work for what they get? If you want luxuries and opportunities in life you have to work for them. Too many people expect to do the minimum and get handouts, THATS the problem. Should health care coverage be a handout? If you get sick can you just work harder to get over that? Should the ability for kids to go to college be a handout?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 21, 2015 -> 01:48 PM) Nothing in that article supports that you cannot make it on minimum wage in this country. So if you live within your means in an affordable pad in a place that isnt downtown San Francisco you will be ok. Even if you have to work minimum wage for a few years and live lean, if you are a hard worker you will make more at some point. Plus 40 hours a week is a LUXURY. I made 23k out of college and worked 2 jobs to afford what I wanted. I worked 10 plus hours a day 7 days a week to move up. Oh and I lived in Lincoln Park in Chicago, which by your crappy link would have required much more money to even make ends meet for rent. What you're not realizing is THIS IS A PROBLEM.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 21, 2015 -> 01:37 PM) Fixed. Cashiers at McDonalds are not working a career and they certainly shouldn't be working that job as a career with a family. Then we need to start generating some other jobs, because >1/2 of the people who are doing those jobs are over 25. More than 1/2 of fast food front line workers are on public assistance and being paid for in part by the taxpayers, either through medicaid and CHIP for health care, food stamps, TANF, or the Earned Income Tax Credit.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 21, 2015 -> 01:26 PM) Ok but not those luxury goods, then yes making even minimum wage people can live a decent life. They can have shelter, food, indoor plumbling, electricity, can send their kids to school and have basic healthcare. And if they work at that job hard enough they may even make MORE money. So it is possible in this country. There are 0 parts of Los Angeles County, for example, where a $15/hour minimum wage full time job can afford that list, especially since you included kids. 2 full time $15 minimum wage jobs can barely pull that while renting a 2 bedroom apartment based on livability calculations/rent.

The other thing to remember is that any team taking Thibs is doing the Bulls a favor by preventing the Bulls from paying 2 coaches at once.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 21, 2015 -> 01:14 PM) Define decent. Would having satellite tv, iphones, internet and flat screen TV's be part of that? And 40 hours is bulls*** if you want to be comfortable, most of us work way more than that. I seriously hate this line of thought. Yes, people who have jobs should be able to afford cell phones. Yes they should be able to afford a television. And it's not the Tv/Internet that gets people in trouble these days any more, its health care costs and college costs if they have families. A century ago you could have said the same thing about people who worked in factories. We decided as a society that those were instead going to be decent jobs, jobs that people could actually afford to live off of. People could say the exact same junk about lazy people on assembly lines turning bolts and how they don't work hard enough to deserve a decent life. At least for a while we decided to be better than that.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 20, 2015 -> 09:38 PM) Nothing makes me shake my head more than fast food workers asking for the wage rate of a college graduate. Nothing makes me shake my head more than the idea that you can work a 40 hour a week position in this country and not be able to afford a decent life.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 21, 2015 -> 12:44 PM) This wasn't even the worst botched legal operation in Waco. Huh?

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ May 21, 2015 -> 07:16 AM) Forgive me if this has been discussed, but are all these Hillary quotes true I just read somewhere? I think they came from people that worked on Clinton's staff etc. They make her sound like a horrible human being. Just looking for the real scoop on all that. Thanks, D. There are a huge number of "quotes" from the Clintons that have appeared in books about them over the years. I'm sure some are accurate, some are fabricated, some are deliberate misquotes, some are accidental misquotes. If you took every bad thing I've said or typed over the past 20 years you could make me sound like a terrible human being too, and then if you made up another 50% well then I'm a mass murderer.

White Sox vs. Indians 5/20 Game Thread
Balta1701 replied to ChiSoxFanMike's topic in 2015 Season in Review
QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ May 20, 2015 -> 07:51 PM) BUT he had 2 walks in one night a few games ago! Progress, right? It could very well be progress and let's hope so. But for God's sake, give the kid a couple months at AA before moving him up again, please? Especially when another of his worries is "fundamental defense at his position" like the guy we just sent down after racing to the big leagues insanely fast. -

QUOTE (Chris Sale @ May 20, 2015 -> 07:14 PM) Anderson is lighting up AA. They should move him up to Charlotte, can't wait to get rid of Alexei. Any chance this gets delayed or even rained out? Anyone by the park right now? Forecast looks pretty bad until around 9. Anderson has like 4 walks this year. He's still got plenty to learn. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 20, 2015 -> 04:34 PM) By "hard to believe" I meant I find it amazing or impossible to believe Republicans are against affordable health care for people. I mean it's not their fricking money. Do something for people, Mr. Brownback. They're convinced they are. If people get sick they'll be motivated to work harder. Cancer is a great motivation to get a better job.

QUOTE (bmags @ May 20, 2015 -> 04:06 PM) Also what Greg keeps deriding as a "lifetime achievement award" is what others would call "resume of an experienced candidate" I've become convinced that "experience" is commonly overestimated in these races compared to things like "judgement". John McCain was by far more "experienced" and he's spent the last 6 years making me so happy he wasn't elected every time he wants to invade someone new. Plus he was so experienced that he thought an inexperienced alaskan governor would make a great Vice President, an obviously great "judgement".

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 20, 2015 -> 03:42 PM) Thanks Balta and Caulfield for finally putting some specifics. I am all for continued health care. I find it hard to believe all Republican candidates are against that but after seeing Brownback in action I can believe anything. Thing is, we don't need Hillary for that. Other Demo candidates if they chose to run would also be in favor of Obama's plan continuing. Yes, however I'm probably going to vote for Sanders in the primary due to him being much more willing to treat wall street as an enemy. But when we get to the general election, "ability to afford health care for family or not" is a pretty major issue for me.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 20, 2015 -> 03:25 PM) File this one under tweets you wish you could take back... Phil Rogers @philgrogers 1h1 hour ago Congrats to Marcus Semien. You're gonna love working w/Ron Washington but you better come fully caffeinated because he's relentless. Took me a second...but oh god.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 20, 2015 -> 03:20 PM) I don't think Thibodeau is a fit with Phil Jackson and what they want to do. That was my point. It's also not like Phil has any connection to Derek Fisher or anything like that, that was a random and completely unexpected hire.
-
QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ May 20, 2015 -> 03:14 PM) Two teams ahead and in the mix for the WC Yeah, that's not as bad as it could be, right now there's 3 teams ahead of them so 1 of the 3 would have dropped back.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 20, 2015 -> 03:07 PM) Crazy how a shootout and brawl broke out in the restaurant, and not one innocent bystander got hurt. Weren't there like 150 bikers there? How many "Innocent bystanders" can fit into that facility?
-
QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ May 20, 2015 -> 02:42 PM) If the Sox are .500 at the break and 5 games out of first place in the division, what do you do at the deadline? How many teams are ahead of them? How far from Wild Card?

QUOTE (Lillian @ May 20, 2015 -> 02:26 PM) Precisely my point. No, I don't expect him to put up an OBP of .375, but that is what I'd expect a good cleanup hitter to do, especially if he strikes out as much as La Roche is doing. His OBP against righties right now is .388. There's an easy solution to this.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 20, 2015 -> 02:13 PM) As of now, those choices look a little better, but it's a long season. Robin was slammed in game threads for putting Morales on base. Ethier was going to be given away. Lind basically was given away and has back issues. When the season is over, I think when you look back objectively, LaRoche won't be such a bad decision. Adam Lind has a .610 OPS against lefties and a .994 OPS against righties. If the worry is "LaRoche is terrible against lefties" then Lind is having that same problem. One difference? Fewer PAs for Lind against lefties, fewer PAs against righties for LaRoche.
-
QUOTE (Lillian @ May 20, 2015 -> 01:56 PM) How you can bring up Ted Williams in a discussion about Adam La Roche, is beyond me. Adam is currently hitting: .207 .281 .310 vs lefties. That is not good enough to play, let alone bat in the heart of the order. Last year, it wasn't much better .204 .284 .336 So the simple solution would be...again...put him on the bench when there's a lefty starter on the mound, and have versatile guys on the bench who hit right handed and can fill that role. For example...Bonifacio in the OF and Garcia at the DH spot, with Beckham at 3b, leaves Eaton as a lefty in the lineup so it's not 9 righties, improves the defense that day, and has the bench ready with 2 LH pinch hitters if a righty comes out of the pen.
-
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ May 20, 2015 -> 01:37 PM) Not only is LaRoche a slow starter, but he has also been adjusting to a new league and the DH mentality. If there's one guy on the team we should give some time before writing-off it's Adam. Plus if we wanted his numbers to be better we could just stop playing him against lefty starters.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 19, 2015 -> 11:22 PM) No offense to you at all, but whenever I post something mean about Hilly and ask questions of people, I get nothing in return. I'm a little concerned that voters indeed are tossing her the Oval Office as some sort of appreciation gift for her merely being 68-69 years old. A lifetime achievement award. Nobody will take me up on my questions about a.) why she should be president and b.) how happy you will be (and why you will be elated) on Election Day when the Republican candidate gives his/her concession speech. #1 by far: Assuming it isn't destroyed by the Supreme Court next month, I will keep the ability to buy health care if I continue having to take these temporary teaching jobs. You can't believe how important that is to me and that would not be the case if any of the "repeal" folks win. Other policy details we've gotten already: calling for full path to citizenship as part of comprehensive immigration bill (notably, a similar one passed the senate and the House Speaker refused to bring it up for a vote as it would have likely passed there as well) and a set of general topics that could turn into a law enforcement and prison reform bill (a speech notably scheduled before Baltimore). I'll be happy to continue adding policy proposals as we get them.

QUOTE (almagest @ May 20, 2015 -> 01:07 PM) http://www.nba.com/bulls/news/samsmith/dra...-nba-mock-draft Some chatter in the comments about the Knicks wanting to trade their pick. I wonder if Thibs/our pick/the Bobcats pick option/Noah/Taj/etc could get it done? If so, what would the Bulls want at #4? IIRC someone said you can't direclty trade players for coaches? And didn't Phil get to personally hire a coach last year and pick Derek Fisher, one of his former players?
