Well shoot.

Isn't he still under contract/being paid by the Marlins through next season?

1. Pitching. 2. People who hit left handed. Figure it out from there.

QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 04:54 PM) This situation will lead to significant changes in the way pre draft physicals are handled, injured players are negotiated with, etc... The Stros are really screwing the pooch IMO, they may save a small amount of money this year but will end up losing in the long run. Nobody will want to be drafted by them and their agents will let the team know about it prior to the draft in the coming seasons. This is a case of the Stros trying to game the system...it's a very short sighted way to conduct business One of the things that I like about the Sox front office is that they don't really try to screw people over (Blue Jays excluded) when they conduct business...they seem to have a moral compass when negotiating with players/teams/etc... that goes a long ways in my eyes Didn't the Astros already have an issue with one guy they drafted?

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 03:33 PM) They get physicals when they declare for the draft. But does that include an MRI on every pitcher's arm? Somehow I doubt that.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 03:19 PM) I think you need something subjective regarding this with an objective threshold. A lot of times, a manager may come out for pure clarification purposes. If he's out of the dugout for x amount of time after the explanation has been made, it's an automatic challenge. If he re-enters the dugout at all, the play is no longer reviewable. It's similar but still allows managers the opportunity to hear how the umps are interpreting a given rule. Or more simply, if you come out of the dugout to request a review it has to be the first thing you ask the ump for. Or just do some version of a challenge flag, you come out for other reasons fine but you have to request a review the moment you push the button or start the process, you can't wait.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 02:50 PM) If they do trade Love, I'd much rather roll with Rubio-Martin-Wiggins-Pekovic-Dieng than Rubio-Lavine/Wiggins-Wiggins/Dunleavy - Boozer-Pekovic. They don't particularly seem to care about picks. They want to keep Love the way Portland kept Aldridge. Obviously, but the question continues to be whether you continue to hold him assuming that the Cavs refuse to part with Wiggins.

QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 02:11 PM) but where is the appeal factor. at this point the power is with the baseball club. I kinda get why you'd say that part, but almost by definition when there is a draft, that is the case. The draft takes away the power of guys to make their own decisions by definition.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 02:00 PM) But again, in that case, I don't think there were any doctors who were saying "he is perfectly healthy!" This is a situation where three doctors are saying "there is nothing wrong with this kid," and the Astros are saying "we see something abnormal here." Do all of the doctors have the same information (MRI results, etc.) or are some going on different levels of investigation? pt has, IIRC, noted that with many full tears you can tell just by a physical examination and touching, whereas an MRI could show things that could someday lead to full tears that couldn't be as easily found without the high-res scan.

2014-2015 NFL Football thread
Balta1701 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
The Vikings conducted an internal investigation about whether releasing P Chris Kluwe was driven by his outspokenness in favor of equal rights for homosexuals. The Vikings previously pledged to release the results of that report. Today they shifted positions and no longer intend to release that report. I was totally willing to believe the Vikes cut him for no reason other than the normal he was expensive and there were cheaper options...until right now. -
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 01:53 PM) I honestly kind of forgot about the Boozer stuff cause I assumed he'd be gone when Pau was brought in. What the hell is going on there? Probably trying last-ditch efforts to trade him before the deadline and will amnesty him at the last moment because it would still have been preferable to do some sort of sign and trade.
-
I believe the deadline to Amnesty Boozer is today.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 01:49 PM) I don't think it would be something that "normal." I think if there was a tear, that there would be less consensus that he was healthy. My guess is this is something the Astros doctors have seen before and have been concerned about, or some abnormality that perhaps they haven't seen before, but that the majority of the medical community does not believe to be concerning. A full tear yes I agree they'd be saying more than "abnormal", but a deformity or partial tear of some sort leading to a difficult to interpret signal still would fit under the group of "things that have virtually always led to TJS a short time down the line" based on that discussion.

Sox Sign & Then Release Henry Rodriguez
Balta1701 replied to winninguglyin83's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 12:34 PM) But, the calls keep coming to sign every player released by another team and how "Coop can fix em." I don't think Cooper has much to do with instructing pitchers in the minor leagues but I think you have to have something to work with if you are going to fix it I copied this from MLB Trade Rumors: •The White Sox have released right-hander Henry Rodriguez, the team announced. Rodriguez just recently signed a minor league deal with the Sox but posted a 21.60 ERA, three strikeouts and a whopping eight walks over 1 2/3 innings with Triple-A Charlotte. That lack of control has been the story of Rodriguez’s career, as the righty has recorded a 6.4 BB/9 over 150 1/3 Major League innings with the Marlins, Cubs, Nationals and A’s over six seasons in the Show, though his high-90′s fastball has helped him record 151 strikeouts. This is the second time Rodriguez has been released this season, as the Marlins already cut ties with him in June. This remains exactly what a rebuilding team like the White Sox should be doing. If they try out 25 pitchers at their AAA/big league levels and wind up with 1 or 2 successes who actually contribute next year and prevent them from having to spend FA money on additional middle relief, it will be a huge success. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 11:51 AM) What are the possibilities that the Astros are calling this significantly abnormal when it's really just a minor tear or something to attempted to save themselves an incredible amount of money? Yes, I'm aware how incredibly unethical and illegal that is. On the flip side, if Aiken has had an independent physical done and there is something incredibly wrong with him, he'd be insane not to take the money at this point. Worth noting a point that came up in the Tanaka discussion in reply to this...I'm not quite sure there is such a thing as a Minor Tear. I believe it was Caulfield who stressed that literally everyone who has tried to pitch through a minor/partially torn tendon in the elbow has wound up tearing it fully within a couple years and going for the TJS.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 10:02 AM) That wasn't the question though, a few pages back J4L said this year will be a tough D assignment even for Thibs, and I was asking why we should expect the D to fall off despite no personnel changes moving from good defensive player to poor defensive player. Yes, if all players get injured, productivity might fall off, but that's not particularly enlightening. If the question is "why will this be a hard season for Thibs's D", I can give a couple reasons. Deng not being there for one, having a bunch of newcomers for another. If Thibs deserves the confidence I've got in him then I think he'll deal with that, and could potentially even round some of those guys into solid contributors on D as well...but in the back of my mind, I'm thinking of guys like Snell and Butler who didn't contribute much in their first year and wondering whether Mirotic and McDermott will wind up in that kind of setup because they're not fitting into his defense rapidly enough.
-
QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 09:51 AM) IMO that's just a silly answer....I realize Jo has been relativity injury prone, but still saying you expect this defense to take a step back because he was healthy last year is nonsense. I'd say "surprisingly healthy" for him, especially given the minutes he played. Can you at least get my point though...Noah turns 30 this season. He had his best season last year at age 28/29, right when people are supposed to have their best seasons. It shouldn't surprise us all that much if at the end of his career that does wind up being his best season, whether it's because of injury or just performance taking a step back. So if the question was asked "give a reason why the Bulls defense might take a step back this year" I'd have that at the top of my list. That could be offset, of course, if Mirotic and some of the other guys fit into the system well, which they darn well might given that we're replacing Boozer and making the team deeper.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 09:46 AM) He's not good enough to be a LF or 3B full time. Yes, he has been hitting for average lately, but he's not a power option that a corner position needs. He's DeAza with less speed and more contact. His outfield D may be just as bad as well. The average OPS of 3b in MLB right now is .722 and it's .711 in the AL. Fine, Conor isn't hitting for power and he's probably not likely to keep up an .861 OPS based on points others have discussed, but if he were to put up an OPS close to .800 (and could also be platooned with on occasion), that would be a solidly above average offensive producer at that position in the modern era.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 09:38 AM) Expecting injuries is just not a fun way to look at things... Just answering the question there.

This one is my fault, I was attempting to make a joke that clearly has not gone over the way I intended. The original statement was that he'd have gotten more if he was Cuban, clearly accidentally crossing up "being able to sign as a full free agent" with "being cuban", so I decided to make the "He actually is Cuban!" joke and clearly has not gone well. I apologize if anyone wound up offended, pin that one on me and let's drop it please?
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 08:16 PM) Can I get a reason the Bulls D is expected to drop off again? Because Joakim Noah has something of an injury history that didn't appear much last year and that was key to him being the top defender, but it wouldn't be all that surprising for him to spend some time injured or to take a step back next year given how he plays.

QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 10:46 PM) As happy as I am that Abreu chose to not take part in the Home Run Derby, it would have been awesome to watch him hit some bombs. I think he'll be more likely to do it next year and it'll be really cool to see him vs. cespedes in the final.
