QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 12:31 AM) You don't agree that things have worsened considerably in all aspects (economy including gas prices, society, environment) during the Obama era? It's truly depressing. In 2008, sometime around November/December, there's a post from me here saying "if credit default swaps destroy the world I'm going to be really pissed."

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 04:45 PM) She is a good local reporter but LA centric and I think the Lakers are dropping all kinds of reports to make themselves relevant and make people sound like their organization has it together again. That is all. I don't for one second believe the Lakers were the 2nd choice for Melo. If somehow that is true and the Bulls were the 3rd destination, people should lose jobs. Cause with this roster if you lose to a team with no coach, Kobe, and nothing else around them, that is just sad. No coach, Kobe, nothing else around them, but the ability to offer like $8 mil more a year.

QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 04:40 PM) Whatever happened to Pineda? Did he get injured again? I know CC is done for the year. Shoulder strain and ongoing inflammation.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 03:40 PM) Thank you, not sure where all this Schwarber hype is coming from, but it's gotten ridiculous. Let's see how the dude does in AA before we include him amongst the elite Cubs prospects. When you're the 4th pick in the draft you better expect some hype.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 04:32 PM) Jones is hurt, he'll be back. Noesi is a starting pitcher, Maurer is a RP which doesn't help with the depth issues at SP. Noesi is also a guy that the Sox have targeted since he was in the Yankees organization. While not helping the rotation issues, it does create an issue in the OF though as the Sox have nothing in the system that is even projected to replicate the production of Viciedo. So you make your line-up significantly worse to make your bullpen marginally better. And no, the depth in AA does not help the Sox right now and if a bullpen arm was all the Sox needed to make a run for the playoffs a deal like that would make sense, but when there are so many wholes in the roster it doesn't make good sense to add to your bullpen. If Maurer could be a starter he would be one now as Seattle has their own rotation issues. Maurer is a very young kid who started in the minors after being drafted out of high school. Started the full year in 2012 at AA, pitched 140 innings as a 21 year old. Got called up to the big leagues at 22 and, unsurprisingly, struggled. Looking at his stats I genuinely can't fathom why they called him up last year and used him as a starter. Maybe their plan for him long term was always the bullpen and maybe they want to keep him there, but he at least has a background as a starter and he could definitely have benefited from more time in the minors working as a starter unless they wanted him in the bullpen long-term. But if they did, no idea why they called him up and used him as a starter. He may not be ready to be a big league starter right now but the Mariners acted like they thought he would be when he was called up.

When Does Flowers Get Replaced As Everyday Catcher?
Balta1701 replied to Feeky Magee's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 04:24 PM) Confirmed. Also, I'll tag this again - A look at the Sox internal catching options. Stats are a little stale now, but the basics in there all still apply. At some point soon, I'd be all for sending Flowers away and giving Phegley one more shot, with Smith going to AAA. My only hesitation is, I am not sure how Phegley's defense has improved, if at all (or his pitcher handling). In any case, giving him a 2nd audition, splitting time with Nieto, should be OK for this non-contending team. Has phegley been putting up a constant low-.800's OPS this year or did he start off poorly and catch a groove lately? -
Sox willing to deal Beckham in "right deal now"

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 03:46 PM) Anyone else think it's 99.9% likely Beckham is gone before August 1st? I'm not expecting a crazy return, but it seems like there are enough teams in need of a 2B for us to get something of value for him. And quite frankly, I think the Sox feel like they can give one of their AAA IFs his ABs the rest of the way and not miss a beat. I wouldn't call it nearly that likely, but it's an obviously correct move. -
So like 10 pages since last time I was in this thread and all we've got is moving trucks and Jarret Jack being traded, right?

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 10:02 AM) Allen Craig is a DH in the making. The guy is never healthy. He can hit, but I wouldnt count on putting him out on defense. pass I'd be interested in him for that role if he were a lefty. Which he is not. Yet he's another guy who's been suggested like 3 years in a row.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 04:05 PM) Interesting article. Obama and the pigheads in Congress should be embarrassed they have been in charge during a horrific six year period in which just about every aspect of life in the United States of America has gone downhill FAST. It's very embarrassing for Obama, who seems to have washed his hands of it all. He basically has blamed the pigheads in Congress and is just playing out the string so to speak. Very sad. But King Obama, the man we'd elect again and again if we could, has been President during one of the darkest periods in U.S. history. The decline of a great great nation is sad to experience. Hilarious!

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 04:01 PM) He will not be a White Sox last year, unless of course we sign him after non-tendering him, and that is pretty unlikely. Next year? -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 04:00 PM) We should see in a matter of weeks. The guy is an above league average outfielder (last year and this year), especially when you adjust for his defensive effectiveness (not to mention ability to play all three outfield positions). Put up a 3 WAR a year ago (and 24th best WAR of all outfielders in 2013). This season he ranks 35th in WAR of all outfielders. Note: Remember, there are 90 starting outfielders, so this puts him in the top 3rd. I disagree because i still like Leury as the return in that. The problem isn't that Leury isn't a talented player in my eyes, the problem is he belongs at AA based on his skill level. That's why I like that return for Rios; I think Leury could eventually be a lot better than this but the Sox have chosen to use him in a different wya. -

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 03:53 PM) I can go on all day with this stuff. The type of deal we make with Beckham can be one that really helps us. What we CAN'T do is settle for Michael Dubee/Jon Link/etc. and just flat out dump the guy to save $1.7M or whatever it would end up being. That's just stupid. Why not? Would you pay Beckham a 3rd year arbitration level contract next year ($7 million ish +)? I would not, barring a massive improvement in his performance in the 2nd half. I'd non-tender him this offseason, flat out dumping the guy then. Given that choice, if I were offered the equivalent of Michael Dubee, a guy with a 5% chance of ever making the bigs, that's an upgrade over what Beckham would give me next year, and I'd save $1.5 million to sweeten the deal. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 03:45 PM) Most dissapointing trade I think we made last year, was the trade for Rios. That was just a garbage return for a very serviceable player. I know some would disagree but that was truly pathetic. Rangers will get much more for him this year. Just to say again, I disagree. -

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 03:16 PM) At this point you can say our entire OF sans Eaton all the way down to the A+ level is replaceable. You can throw Jordan in that mix if you want for his D and pop from the left side, I wouldn't mind, I'd actually enjoy it because I like the guy. But he's not a long-term solution, and I really don't think anyone else hanging around the AA-MLB level is either other than Eaton and maybe Micah Johnson if they move him to LF. The problem continues to be...unless the White Sox this offseason are going to be willing to spend money on a corner OF and a DH, Viciedo remains exactly the kind of guy they ought to be targeting. Young, fairly talented, not yet extremely expensive, lots of upside, hasn't yet put it together and thus the cost is down, multiple years of team control remaining. If the Mariners are willing to give up someone reasonable for him, I'm more than willing to listen at this point, but until he either gets too expensive for us to wait on or we have a better option available, "dumping" him is the one thing I can't agree with. I can agree with dumping Beckham and De Aza because they're unlikely to have their final arbitration years offered next year. Viciedo isn't yet in that boat. He could be there next year, but not yet. -
QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 02:23 PM) Chris Cotillo @ChrisCotillo 5m The latest on a potential trade that could send Jake Peavy from the #RedSox to the #STLCards: http://sbnation.com/e/5645484 Chris Cotillo @ChrisCotillo 3m As I reported last year, #STLCards discussed Wacha, Martinez, Wong in trade talks with #WhiteSox for Peavy: http://www.mlbdailydish.com/2013/7/28/4565...inez-wacha-wong … I'll be pissed if the Red Sox get a bigger haul for Peavy than the Sox did. Have you looked at Jake Peavy's numbers this year?

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 01:58 PM) Danks until A. Garcia is ready, which could be soon. The team is going nowhere, so that's a viable replacement until Garcia is ready. Sox don't need Viciedo. Now is the time to dump him. Jordan Danks is pretty clearly not a replacement for anyone. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 01:52 PM) Your last sentence is just crazy IMO. Beckham is average at best. How can you overvalue Beckham like that? Just cause he was a top draft pick doesn't mean anybody values him. I can't imagine him bring much more than a Chris Getz type player cause he is a Chris Getz type player. OK he's a little better than Getz. This trade deadline, the Sox should dump Beckham, Viciedo and that's it (I'm assuming nobody will trade for Dunn). Get what you can for them. Why? Cause there are replacements for both. Who is the replacement for Viciedo? -
QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 01:12 PM) Especially given the token Lester pick, that's just total BS Lester is 2nd in MLB in fWAR among pitchers right now, hard to buy that was a token pick.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 11:36 AM) And his June numbers still are pretty similar to the year Mitchell had in AA when he was supposedly "rushed" to AAA. Davidson should finish out the minor league season, then see if he is worthy of a September call up. Personally I don't have much of a problem with the way Mitchell was handled because I think the injury made it virtually impossible for him to recover, so I'm not going to complain there.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 10:32 AM) So in one thread you blast the White Sox for "rushing" Mitchell, mentioning his k-rate. Davidson has a 31% k-rate and a .200 batting average and you want to see him up. This doesn't make any sense. If you accept that the start of this season was an aberration for him and his June performance, which is much more in line with his career numbers, is him, then I would start being willing to see him up in August. Depends on what he does for July of course.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 10:20 AM) So Samardzija has allowed less earned runs in more innings pitched, more ks, the same amount of walks and less hits, and obviously lower WHIP, and he is worth .6 less fWar this year? I'm sure a part of that is the fact that he's pitching in the NL. -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 10:09 AM) We've already established that over the last couple decades crime has dropped significantly. Meanwhile, the number of guns in this country has gun up in the same amount of time. Less guns =/= less violence. However, the number of people owning guns has dropped dramatically as well. Fewer people are owning guns but more people are stockpiling them.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 10:06 AM) I do not believe Quintana is better than Samardzija. He is more valuable and more of a guarantee going forward, but I do not believe he is better. Frankly, he may not be worse either, but I think it's crazy talk to say that Quintana is better than Samardzija. fWAR the last 3 years including so far in 2014 Smarj 3.0 2.8 2.4 Q 1.6 3.7 3.0 I don't think it's crazy talk to say that based on the last 2 seasons Q has been the better pitcher. He's been worth 1.5 extra WAR over the past 1.5 seasons. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 10:04 AM) When the Sox contend as it stands today they will probably end up buying a power bat for DH or something of the like. We just dont have enough in the stockpile. Well, unless Davidson figures it out. I think the other missing feature is that there's no power from the LH side.
