Tyler Flowers is your 2014 starting catcher

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 12:53 PM) The next argument is that Paulino as the 5th is stunting the development of Beck at the major league level...because if he has to wait until 2015 to pitch in the majors, that will put the rebuild off another year, because 90% of rookie pitchers go through growing pains. If Beck tears through AA, I have every confidence he will see the big leagues before the end of this season. Beck tearing through AA in the first half would be the exact path EJ was on last year, and he still got a big league callup despite missing a month with injury. -
QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 09:28 AM) How long does Nieto need to stay on the roster before he can be sent down? 162 games (DL/rehab stint time is ok).

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 09:06 AM) I thought it was odd, if you look at the AP version of the game story from yesterday - run on lots of sites - it says that Marcus Semien has "all but clinched a roster spot". Does that AP wire writer know something everyone else doesn't? I suspect he/she was just reading between the lines and making a stretched assumption. If Beckham is healthy, I think there is very little chance Semien is on the roster. Has Beckham played an AB since his injury? Any talk on him playing today/tomorrow?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 03:44 AM) Wow. That's quite a limb you are out there on. I agree it's out on a limb, but there's a valid point buried in there. Quintana is going into his 3rd year after a solid first year and a dramatic improvement his 2nd year. He picked up extra velocity and his offspeed stuff became much more effective. I doubt he'll make another velocity jump this year (I attribute that to his arm being better-adjusted to the workload), but continued refinement of his offspeed stuff could well give him a chance to continue improving. -

QUOTE (farmteam @ Mar 24, 2014 -> 10:09 AM) Vonleh declares, no shocker there. Anthony Lee, your table is ready! Etherington and Hollowell both to transfer. I won't miss the latter but I always thought Etherington provided a good spark every time he came in. -
QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Mar 24, 2014 -> 05:02 PM) Almost sounds like a "culture". Makes me wonder if their big leaguers are just going about it more intelligently. Though the game wants it all to just go away, we REALLY need to learn more about what Tony Bosch was trying to tell us regarding the ease with which the testing can be beaten. To be fair...the MLB was supposed to have fundamentally changed their testing procedures at the start of last year including long-term monitoring and blood testing/HGH testing. By my count, on the previous testing regime about 25% of the Biogenesis guys actually tested positive (including Braun, Melky). If that is the case, then the old version caught some...and hopefully the new version is a lot tighter.

Ventura still hasn't announced 14 Closer

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Mar 24, 2014 -> 04:43 PM) Hoping for a closer by committee approach. Ride the match-ups and the hot hand. Also would keep Webb/Jones arbitration costs way down. If Webb winds up the closer any time before 2016 the arb costs won't matter much and the team probably won't care because they're certainly not hoping to rebuild for this long -
Jose Quintana extened thru 2018 - 5 yrs, $21.5 or $26.5 mill

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 24, 2014 -> 03:47 PM) Honestly if I was a young pitcher who is already successful I'm not sure I could pass down a team friendly deal in hopes of a huge FA payday. That is such a huge risk that a freak baseball to the elbow even will cut your value to nothing. Big difference between a guy 1 year from FA and a guy 5 years away. That's why the Sox got Sale and Quintana; they could get hurt tomorrow and still leave baseball with tens of millions of dollars. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 24, 2014 -> 03:28 PM) Obviously a team would have overpaid for him, but to what extent, I have no idea. The thing is, for him to get what he turned down, he is going to have to be lights out again. Seems to me you are risking well over $100 million for maybe $20-30 million if everything went right. He would be the oldest pitcher to get one of those contracts if he gets one after this season. Who knows, maybe he hates it in Detroit. One other thing to remember is that his agent appears to be Scott Boras. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 24, 2014 -> 03:18 PM) A great question is how much do you think Scherzer would have gotten if he were on the FA market. If he hit FA right now I'd guess in the 7/$175 range. If he comes close to repeating last year's numbers we start talking $200 million next offseason. One summary of why that contract is below-market -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 24, 2014 -> 03:14 PM) That is a really tough call to make. Turning down $140 million is a HUGE risk. Ask Juan Gonzalez. If he's currently juicing and about to come off a cycle then I would agree with you. -
According to something I read a few minutes ago the confirmation came not due to discovery of debris but instead due to a strong satellite lock on the plane showing its position in that ocean.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 24, 2014 -> 02:59 PM) Scherzer is an idiot. If he's healthy at the end of this season he'll clear that easily and you know it. -
Statement just issued to the media and families saying that there is now some confirmation that the plane went down in the southern Indian Ocean.

QUOTE (Brian @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 09:15 PM) Captain America 2 at over 90% on RT with over 20 reviews. IM3 was at like 94% through 50+ reviews and then settled down in the low 80's/high 70's. I think this is a pretty common setup.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 24, 2014 -> 09:18 AM) I'm not sure they had to improve their stock. The tournament is kind of meaningless in that sense anyway. (To be fair though, I think DRose made himself the clear #1 during the tourney when Rose/Beasley was an open question going in. At least that's how I viewed it, and that's the last one I can think of where the tourney made an obvious difference).

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 07:33 PM) .330 obp, right now today if he gets 300 AB's. You will come out and actually predict that a guy who put up a .312 OBP in AAA will improve significantly by coming up to the big leagues. Sigh. -
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 07:25 PM) There are many things currently with this organization to be up in arms with, I just haven't gotten around to Flowers/Phegley. And obviously, you pay so little attention that you failed to note the .520 OPS he put up in the big leagues last year.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 07:16 PM) His .350 OBP is closer to his true talent than his .312. That is NOT what I asked. I asked what he would do if called up right now. You can't even answer the question spelled out 100% clearly because then you can't b**** about Dunn. And if his long-term ability is .350 OBP in the big leagues I'll acutally be seriously impressed. Because his OBP in A and AA ball is .349 and .353 overall; keeping up your A ball numbers is usually a big jump. -

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 05:55 PM) I do have all the answers many of them are even right. I strongly disagree with some of the ways the White Sox are currently conducting business and apparently it rubs some the wrong way. Which of these 3 numbers do you think is a more accurate prediction of what Andy Wilkins would do in the big leagues if called up right now: his .380 OBP at Birmingham in the first half of 2013, his .312 OBP at Charlotte in the 2nd half of 2013, or the .350 average OBP over the entire season? -
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 05:43 PM) I did not point the finger at Balta. He directed a personal attack at me which I responded to. However, you did not address the actual given point, that Wilkins's OBP last year is made up of a .380 OBP at birmingham and .310 at Charlotte, and thus the .350 average is irrelevant. You ignored it. Instead, you responded with an ad hominem attack, changing the subject and attacking on an irrelevant issue because you will not say that you expect Wilkins to put up a higher than .312 OBP if he is brought up right now. Josh Phegley's average OPS between Chicago and Charlotte last year is .765. That should indicate that he was an above average contributor using the exact same standard you just used, so why aren't you up in arms about him being at Charlotte?
-
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 05:24 PM) This is fantastic progress. Why it was just this time last year that you predicted the 2013 White Sox to WIN 90+ games. Gold Star for you. Our next lesson for you is summed up by this Wikipedia page. I suggest you read it before your next post.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 05:12 PM) If we get Rodon you make sure you sign him. Having him and Sale at the front of the rotation complimented by Q, Johnson, Danish, Beck, etc. would be awesome. Unless he's available at #3 for a reason.
