  1. Magnitude 8.1 earthquake off the Chilean coast, tsunami warnings issued.
  2. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Apr 1, 2014 -> 04:00 PM) I would think that strategy would be more useful with a mid-first-round selection rather than top five. But who knows? The big difference with this strategy is the dollars. Think of it in terms of percentages. If you've got a guy who is willing to sign for 10% under slot and you have the 17th pick, that becomes $210k you save; that's enough to give a 5th/6th round pick 3rd-round money. But if you've got the #3 pick and the guy signs for 10% under slot, that's $560k. That's the dollar value of a late 3rd round pick. That's enough money to give a 4th rounder 2nd-round money.
  3. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Apr 1, 2014 -> 03:16 PM) That's why the Sox likely will be taking some more college seniors than usual in the first 10 rounds. Easy signs, low bonuses to offset the higher bonus that whomever we take at No. 3 will command. They could of course still do the opposite, find a guy that will sign for a tiny bit under slot at #3, allowing them to sign the equivalent of an extra 2nd or 3rd round draft pick maybe more than once in the top 10.
  4. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 1, 2014 -> 01:42 PM) he mentioned in post game interviews that he normally does not want to swing at the first pitch. His adrenaline must have been through the roof What caught my eye otherwise was that he had 0 counts with 2 strikes and got ahead in the count twice in his first game.
  5. I know it's just one day but found it interesting. Abreu's double came on the first pitch of the at bat, in the other at bats he had a 1-1 count and two 2-1 counts. He went 0-1 twice but brought those counts back to even on the next pitch.
  6. In March of 2014, the United States military suffered 0 combat fatalities.
  7. QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Apr 1, 2014 -> 09:52 AM) He'll probably turn green Hulk style. Haven't done it, but I think you actually turn pale when you take in too much DHMO.
  8. QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Apr 1, 2014 -> 09:50 AM) Will the DHMO eventually make him Barry Bonds big? I think it's probably strong enough that it would actually kill him first if he took too much of it.
  9. Yeppers. Thankfully we must look forward and not backward so no one can go to jail for this.
  10. That's it, from now on I'm referring to Sale as DHMO.
  11. QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 1, 2014 -> 09:25 AM) Since "Opening Week" is about to get terrible weather, wouldn't it be a good business move just to postpone the next two games now, and have doubleheaders in August and September? It's a division team. Do it. Of course, there's also a downside risk that both teams could fall 20 games back and the game would never be made up.
  12. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 1, 2014 -> 09:07 AM) This is exactly what I was talking about (above) when it comes to day trading, and why I think it's a suckers game. I never buy stock at "market"...I always put a limit price on purchases because of this. The sad thing is...it isn't just day traders who are being stolen from. It's "people who invest their retirement savings in the stock market".
  13. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 1, 2014 -> 09:17 AM) Guess what day it is.
  14. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 05:29 PM) Given the way RV keeps him in with 120+, I like his chances of a CG. IIRC Robin has been nice enough to limit guys loads at least for their first week. Esp. with the offday and possible weather days coming up, get the pen started working today.
  15. The good news is, if the bunt had worked, no one would care about taking the bat out of the hands of the #3 hitter.
  16. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 04:19 PM) I don't recall the last time that Eaton got a basehit that wasn't a groundball up the middle. The guy is a f***ing machine. There you go.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 04:44 PM) Grady uses the bunt with two on, no outs. Not the worst place for it with Mauer due up 2nd.
  18. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 04:25 PM) From the Opening Day lineups announced so far, here is a list of #3 hitters across baseball. Carlos Gonzalez Jose Bautista Adam Jones Giancarlo Stanton Joe Mauer Conor Gillaspie Matt Holliday David Ortiz David Wright Freddie Freeman Ryan Braun Prince Fielder Chase Utley Starlin Castro Jayson Werth Andrew McCutchen Ben Zobrist Jose Altuve Chase Headley Joey Votto Eric Hosmer Miguel Cabrera Pablo Sandoval Paul Goldschmidt I could be missing someone but by my count only 2 of those guys have not made an all star team.
  19. Was debating whether to try Gameday audio this year since I didn't go for the extra innings package, and now just trying out Gameday it's crashed 5 different times on my computer through 2 innings. I think it's safe to say this computer can't handle it.
  20. Actually had to check to see if Lindstrom even pitched in the spring, found out he threw 3 innings at some point.
  21. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 02:39 PM) 2) You will still have numerous opportunities to complain about defense and fundamentals not improving from 2013. I'm expecting it now for a lot of these guys and I'll be more than willing to accept the "they're a bunch of rookies" excuse. But with Viciedo...we really do need to see progress in LF. He's been there long enough now that "initial struggles" ought to be overcome and if he's going to be a tolerable LF, he ought to start showing it.
  22. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 01:38 PM) Benny Hill Theme to replace "Don't Stop Believin'"? Yeah, you're right, he can fake it. I'm just saying I wouldn't mind seeing a Jordan Danks-ish defense guy out there instead against lefties when Viciedo would DH and Smith would be benched. Plus it's not too hard to find mediocre OFs that mash lefites -- the addition of a Smith/lefty crusher platoon might be a sneaky substantial upgrade. There are definitely interesting ways to make it work, but until we see some of these guys this year it's hard to know what the needs will be next year. Viciedo could get stuck in a part time role and be terrible at it, never catch his yearly 2 week hot streak, and wind up with a .600 OPS at the end of the season for all we know.
  23. QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 02:08 PM) Bryce Harper slid late and took a knee to the head. Shook up. Accroding to MLB.com he stayed in.
