  1. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 10:01 AM) I voted for a combination of things. While I have always had the thought that smaller helmets would force players to quit using them as weapons, there would be a lot of growing pains/additional head injuries as players broke old habits. I think a big thing that should be worked on is proper tackling form. This should start at the lowest levels of organized football and work its way up. I've never understood the whole philisophy of launching yourself at a guy to try and make a tackle. To me, a well executed form tackle is a thing of beauty and if players were taught how to properly tackle and forced to properly tackle by the rules put in place, the number of head injuries should decline. I'm basically along these lines. The only way this sport survives is if they set rules to make an effort to control the problem and people are taught proper technique.
  2. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 10:06 AM) Oh c'mon now, re-signing PK had nothing to do with Adam Dunn. So all the people who said "come on, Paulie has a role, look he'll be the platoon DH with Dunn since Dunn is so bad against lefties it makes sense" weren't telling the truth?
  3. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 10:05 AM) Ok I don't see Belisario's $3M on there or Abreu's $10M signing bonus so that adds $13M to their total of $80 which takes it to $93M and they said $11M in arbritration raises while I said $12M so my figure of $94 in Post #86 was pretty much dead on. One minor quibble they have Konerko at $2.5 but he's really only getting $1.5 this year and $1M in 2021. I think that's a sign Belisario hasn't been finalized yet. I think Konerko's last contract had him getting $1 million in 2014 as part of the deferred payments, so in reality he's being paid in total $2.5 million this year and that's actually accurate. Abreu's signing bonus is being counted off the books by a lot of people and it seems no one knows yet how to divy that up. I don't know how to deal with it either...when I try to count it people tell me I'm wrong to do so.
  4. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 10:06 AM) Which would you guys want more from a catcher position defense or offense? Either. Someone effective at either.
  5. QUOTE (Jillian Michaels' Abs @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 09:21 AM) Depends on what they get back for Dunn as well. Look guys...we're not getting back anything useful for Dunn. If we chip in $10 million+ we might get back some no-name A-baller and that's going to require the Sox to chip in $10 million+. That's just how it's going to be. For crying out loud we signed an extra DH because we didn't feel Adam Dunn had that firm of a grasp on that position even.
  6. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 11:04 PM) Which lucky Soxtalker won the Mega Millions? Yesterday the evening news suggested that ticket sales for this were running about $11 million a minute. That prompted me to do the math in a new way. Projected that back 3 days in time, assumed that the sale rate had multiplied by a factor of 2 late in the sales and dropped off overnight...came up with an estimate that the revenue from this single contest for $300 million dollars was somewhere in the range of $10 to $20 billion, give or take. In other words, the return here is on the order of 5% or lower. The lottery's take is 95%. I decided to go visit a casino instead. The only thing with a greater likelihood of having your money stolen is putting it in a bank.
  7. QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 10:53 PM) On another note, one of the MLB Network's lesser known guys loved what Hahn has done since last July. He named Abreu, Garcia, Eaton and Davidson as the right step for the Sox right now. He then elaborated, "adding those four guys along with Chris Sale, Jose Quintana and JORDAN DANKS..." I had to facepalm after he named JorDanks. That one I actually kind of get...D2 didn't have a terrible year last year. You'd really have to be paying attention to how he was used to know he was only being used sparingly. If you just were watching the stats, on September 1 he was hitting .258 with an OPS in the .720's. A guy who can't spend 100% of his time on every team could see "26 year old outfielder with decent pedigree being moderately productive in a MLB stint".
  8. QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 08:28 AM) In keeping with Hahn's plan of building a solid core for the future; why not "give" Dunn to Houston, or any team for that matter, in exchange for another young player who could fill a long term need for the Sox? Just pay whatever portion of the last year of Dunn's contract, that team wants, in return for a young player who fits in the front office's 3 to 5 year plan. What portion of Dunn's contract the Sox would pay would be a function of how good the prospect is. Perhaps Stassi would be a name that might meet that description, and provide a solution to the catching void. With Castro, the Astros don't need another young catcher: http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/08/...ect-max-stassi/ I wouldn't give up that guy for Dunn and $14 million, not even close.
  9. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 07:57 AM) If we trade Dunn, does Konerko become the everyday DH? Or do we platoon someone with Konerko and if so who? Not a lot of internal left-handed options. What would probably happen is that they'd play Konerko as the everyday DH to start the season, not give him enough time off, and then wind up with other guys sliding into that role when Konerko starts hurting.
  10. QUOTE (JoshPR @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 09:19 PM) Foulke was decent a few seasons, but then he had a season were he couldn't hold a lead. Especially against the twins Then we let him go, Billy Beane laughed and the Red Sox won a world series.
  11. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 09:14 PM) I suppose he could prove he can put forth a better offensive showing than an .830 OPS in the PCL. Gillaspie, for example, went for .842 in 2011. And Adam Eaton .995 in 2012. More than one of Keppinger, De Aza, Viciedo, Dunn, and Gillaspie will be traded between now and the end of the 2014 season. There isn't any reason all of that needs to be done before opening day. Relevant baseball events such as players getting injured (on our team and others) and teams finding themselves either contending or not-contending. As those things happen, what to do with our superfluous players will become more clear. The main scenario where Semien and/or Davidson make sense on the opening day starting roster is if Gillaspie and/or Beckham go in a deal for a lefty catcher. My guess is that Gillaspie is waived when the roster drops to 25 if he's not traded beforehand.
  12. QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 08:31 PM) Mitch Williams just ripped the Sox for next year. He said Hahn made some good moves getting four young players but the loss of Reed is a huge one. Perhaps a closer bias there? He then said our rotation is Chris Sale and "8-10" guys competing for the last four spots. I guess he missed the fact that we have an Ace in terms of WAR named Jose Quintana, have you heard of him? We also have A top 75 prospect in Erik Johnson and a three time 5+ WAR pitcher fully healthy for the first time since '10. Not to mention were one of the best teams at making pitchers from nothing. I understand were not a playoff contender as is but why is this guy on MLB Network? He doesn't even do his homework before he starts talking. It always amazes me people can be highly paid and on tv without having to actually take the time to get the basics down on these systems. If someone was giving me 6 figures to talk about baseball id probably be able to talk about pretty much every big league roster and probably go 5-10 prospects deep in every system. Maybe makeup just takes that long.
  13. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 06:16 PM) Whaddaya think the chances are this kid is going to start right away? 95%.
  14. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 05:57 PM) Eaton's a lefty Well then that's our lefty in the lineup.

    Alright begin

You can find much better drinks.
  16. QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 05:40 PM) That doesn't answer Dunt's question. Danks is on the bench. Then we shouldn't have traded for 2 righties from Arizona who play the only positions we had lefty starters at or signed a righty pinch hitter/DH to fill in that vital role. We're going to run an excessively right handed lineup out there next year. Basically at this point the answer is "Deal with it".
  17. QUOTE (Dunt @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 05:29 PM) Who hits from the left side if Hahn trades Dunn, De Aza, and Gillespie? Eaton who you are hitting at the top of the order and who? Danks presumably takes De Aza's spot on the roster.
  18. QUOTE (scs787 @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 04:53 PM) We have no idea what the end game to the 2014 bench is. Kepp and Conor are probably gone, which I have zero problem with. I see absolutely nothing wrong with a PK-catcher-Garcia-Danks bench. It covers all the bases, has speed, defense, and power. It takes removing a guy with $9 million of dead money on his contract and another guy with 2 more pre-arb seasons in order to make that be the bench. That's my problem with it.
  19. Thankfully they're not paying $15 million to a guy who's supposed to be able to score in the post.
  20. I'm in the equivalent of 27th grade because I can't find anything comparable to that.
  21. QUOTE (peppers312 @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 04:09 PM) i wouldn't mind john buck. i think he's the type of ball player our clubhouse (every clubhouse) needs. We're paying Paul Konerko $2.5 million to be that guy already.

    Alright begin

Sorry, I turned into a 14 year old girl there for a second. Apologies.
  23. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 03:23 PM) If it is all about how the team performs, can you explain why pitcher's ERAs and all their other numbers are generally better when they gets wins vs. when they get losses and no decisions. Because there is a correlation between a pitcher having a good game and a win and a pitcher having a bad game and a loss. However, that only makes it a useful stat if there aren't already better stats to evaluate whether the pitcher had a set of good games or bad games.
  24. QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 03:27 PM) I know I'm in the minority but I really don't want to trade Dunn right now. Then we shouldn't have signed another DH. We need 2 roster spots right now out of those 3 guys and frankly it would be really nice to keep the guy who is pre-arb.
  25. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 03:15 PM) Yeah, Buck doesn't seem like an upgrade over what is already there. I wouldn't understand the point. It'd be to "add some veteran leadership" to what is obviously a very young team. That said, we're wasting a roster spot on Konerko already and we have a coaching staff as well.
