  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 05:05 PM) Jacobs I could see. Barnum is still pretty young and playing his first full year of pro ball. It is still really early for him to be there. Jacobs has been in a slump for a while. He's putting up a .607 OPS at BHam right now and this will wind up being his longest season to date once the playoffs happen. He isn't ready for a promotion to AAA so I don't think he's a good AFL candidate yet either.
  2. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 05:03 PM) I think Jacobs and Barnum should have been included... That would be way early for the AFL for Barnum. They may very well send him to the lower-level Arizona fall league and perhaps some winterball as well. Generally the Sox seem to use the AFL for guys who are getting close to the bigs.
  3. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 04:49 PM) Looks like they're being represented by: P- Chris Bassitt P- Charlie Leesman P- Stephen McCray P- Kevin Vance 2B- Micah Johnson SS- Marcus Semien I'm stunned none of our outfielders got sent there. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/afl/club.jsp?team_id=454 That seems like very much the right list to me. Hopefully Trayce and Jacobs are AFL candidates for next year.
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 04:37 PM) 2015 is the year they're looking to start contending from all accounts. They have 4 of the top 21 prospects in baseball according to Kiley McDaniel...ouch http://sbb.scout.com/2/1320072.html So they're going to be contending in 2015 and at the end of 2013 only 1 of those prospects on the list has made AA? The 3 guys in A-ball this year are going to polish off AA and AAA next year and be ready to contribute to the big league roster? I assume that means they're trading at least 3 of those guys then.
  5. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 04:17 PM) So let me ask this question, what about if he had never gotten married...say he just had kids with this woman...would his actions still be "hell" for them? In a lot of ways, yeah. Some ways maybe worse, since the legal process for divorce and splitting up assets is often clearer than how to deal with kids if marriage isn't involved. Either way, tearing a parent out of a kid's life is pretty darn hard on the kid.
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 03:55 PM) ...have you read the scopes (or various other links you could google) review of those quotes yet? A lot of them are from one source in a book over 20 years ago, and even then, have had the gratuitous profanity added in from the original. It's obvious she's a terrible person and doesn't respect people. I heard one time she even just assumed a random person she met was a lousy tipper. Now that's disrespect right there, making those kind of assumptions about people.
  7. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 03:43 PM) It is all about the tone. Burton has a way of making dark fantasies and stories into something almost whimsical. Keaton fit the mold of his Batman, in both the theme of the movie and the writing and direction of the character. I dont think Keaton, Kilmer or Clooney would have fit into Nolans view of Batman/Bruce Wayne in the way Bale did, and I dont think Bale would have fit into Burton and Schumachers view of Batman/Bruce Wayne the way those three did for Burton/Schumacher. Thank you, I was trying to figure out a way to say something like this and couldn't find the right words.
  8. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 02:39 PM) Just one estimate, but here's a discussion of a 2012 paper that suggested military interventions on behalf of a rebelling population tended to lead to about a 40% increase in the killing rates.
  9. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 02:28 PM) So then what if we just sit there and let this continue for a while. Then what? Don't people start leaving Syria by the tens of thousands until the country is just about empty? Oh, I should also note, the fighting also has a tendency to follow these refugees into other countries and fighting has been reported in both Lebanon and Iraq associated with this mess.
  10. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 02:34 PM) Is there not a point where enough people leave the country that it cripples their economy, and thus reduces incentive for China/Russia to keep helping them? They're in the middle of a civil war. Their economy is effectively already destroyed.
  11. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 02:31 PM) There's always the possibility that it ends up like Rwanda, the DRC, and other humanitarian crises. There's also the possibility that doing something makes the situation worse as well.
  12. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 02:28 PM) So then what if we just sit there and let this continue for a while. Then what? Don't people start leaving Syria by the tens of thousands until the country is just about empty? That's already happened, there are millions of refugees. The international community is paying, somewhat, to keep them barely alive. The more of them there are, the more expensive that gets. The other downside of doing nothing is that Assad and the rest of the world really begin to understand that there is no actual consequence to using chemical weapons in a civil war if the west doesn't have an economic interest in the country, and they start being employed and manufactured much more often (also increasing the likelihood they eventually wind up in the hands of terrorists). That and a much more rapid growing body count.
  13. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 02:25 PM) What will Russia and China try to do to us if we get involved? They sound upset. They could readily increase the aid they give to Syria to counter our moves and make it a much bigger bloodbath. They can prevent any international agreement of any sort on action so that there is never a consensus developed against the Assad regime. They can increase their support of other rogue states like North Korea to weaken the U.S. negotiating position with that country. They have even been known to use their supplies, such as oil/gas (russia) or rare minerals (china) as negotiating tools to force other countries to agree to things to avoid economic damage (imagine them cutting off iphone5c exports!)
  14. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 02:15 PM) Geez. Ballplayers are sick if this is true. Some apparently will do anything to get the edge. I know the season is long, really long, and they get tired but just play the game the best you can drug-free. My gawd. Oh, so now you're opposed to guys doing whatever they can to win and giving it their all
  15. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 27, 2013 -> 07:43 AM) Kids who are 18 right now were 6 when Bush took office. They won't have any memories of Clinton. I'm pretty sure I can remember one event involving Ronald Reagan when I was 5. I was mad because the news was intruding on the cartoons I wanted to watch. Jan 28, 1986.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 05:17 PM) Any early ideas at a ceiling of either total dollars, total years, annual dollars, or some combination of those factors? Steve Stone already threw $60 million out on the broadcast.

  18. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 01:46 PM) http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,6293451.story If I was a Astros fan I would be pissed at management. I'm legitimately n ot sure if I would be or not. I'd have an extra $200 in my pocket from not purchasing the extra innings package and I'd be staring at my 2nd straight #1 overall pick, and my team in a year or two should have enormous amounts of room to make a dent in the free agent market when they're ready. That said, if I had a young son in Houston...I'd imagine he'd be playing a lot of football or basketball and thinking of baseball the way I think of hockey. It's there but why care about it if I'm not going to watch it on th e TV?
  19. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 01:14 PM) If that's their thinking, as a Sox fan, I like the way they think. Cano is great, but he's no Cabrera. Given that they have Fielder under contract, it might be a long-term move that does make sense, unless your team thinks Cabrera will be able to stay at 3rd for much longer (and as everyone has noted, he's getting extra beat-up right now).
  20. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 01:11 PM) I'm too busy here in SoCal watching the Sox and rarely watch the Angels but one thing that bothers me about Scioscia is most of the time he bats Trout 2nd or leadoff. The guys has 64 extra base hits and rarely bats in the middle of the order. (3rd through 6th only 18 games and all 18 were hitting 3rd.) Mark Trumbo has more RBI than Trout (84-80) and is hitting .240 Trout also has a .427 OBP. The earlier you get him up in the order, the more damage he will do and the more at bats he will get. The only other guy on the Angels roster with an OBP above .340 and a near-full-season played is Howie Kendrick. Trumbo is getting those RBI's because he's knocking in Mike Trout.
  21. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 12:49 PM) I read earlier this year, things were tightening up. I'd be shocked if they signed Cano. They still have to pay Scherzer, and Cabrera's extension is going to be monopoly money. Going after Cano could be a sign they're willing to let Cabrera walk.
  22. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 10:07 AM) They were more serious about Soler and Cespedes than the others, but your point remains. Definitely worth noting though that the White Sox might not have been the ideal landing spot for some of these signings once they became big-budget guys. Pre-2012 the Sox were cutting back salary and had an OF with an expensive, struggling guy already and a couple more young guys to work in (Rios, De Aza, Viciedo). That they went for Cespedes at all despite cutting $20 million from the payroll that year is somewhat surprising. This year they have tons of money to spend even if there's a payroll cut and this guy would not block anyone.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 10:01 AM) This is what I remember as well. I believe we were also supposedly linked to Soler quite heavily but the Cubs bid a ridiculous amount for a guy at his age.
  24. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 25, 2013 -> 11:57 PM) My main concern is that the Sox fall ot of the top 10 picks. Under the new collective bargaining agreement, teams with one of the first 10 picks in the draft that sign a free agent who was tendered a qualifying offer are not required to surrender their top pick. Then we can sign Jose Abreu and surrender our top pick to the Cuban leagues when the embargo is lifted.
