  1. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 06:17 PM) Kinda wondering how the dominos falling can effect the Bulls... 1) There's now a logjam for GSW's SG/SF spots. Klay, Barnes, and Iggy all need to start. 2) Kobe is gonna be pissed. Six years later, maybe he gets to the Bulls. Deng and Booz would both need to disappear and a backup PF would need to be found unless Erik Murphy and Malcolm Thomas become better than before. 3) Atlanta is gonna go into rebuild mode. Jump on Horford? 4) Mavericks basically have to go full rebuild as well. VC might be available. 5) Asik is moving somewhere, so follow the scent and try to get involved. 6) Denver might be looking for a defensive SF to replace Iggy. Also, ORLANDO WON THE DWIGHT TRADE?! These will all be interesting to consider and discuss as they approach happening. Steve will point out repeatedly as these discussions come up that none of them will happen. Steve will be correct.
  2. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 06:13 PM) I think the White Sox will/should plan to definitely compete in 2015. This means you start adding pieces next year, but not all of them. Next year is one of those "if everything goes right" years. You fill a hole or two with veterans that you think are worth building around, keep some decent players from this year (like every player that hasn't yet reached free agency). Then you can roll the dice with guys in a couple spots - unless there is a total disaster in the second half, I think Phegley is a shoo-in as a guy you let develop into next season. Maybe, if we're lucky, somebody like Trayce might look ready for the outfield. We'll have to see. Might get somebody in trade that deserves a shot to develop. Whether the Sox should target 2014 or 2015 depends entirely on the kinds of offers they get for Rios, Alexei, and Peavy (and to a lesser extent, De Aza, Dunn, etc.)
  3. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 06:06 PM) Begin the Asik sweepstakes. If a team trades for Asik, do they get to do the balance-out-the-poison-pill-year trick the Rockets were able to do with his contract?
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 06:03 PM) Funny thing is that happened about a week after Gonzo tweeted a photo of Daryl Boston holding a pre game baserunning seminar for the team. Remember the one single 45 minute session they ran on basic fielding drills mid-May? My response to that was "they ought to be doing this every single day". They still ought to be doing that every single day. This team ought to be exhausted from fielding drills at this point as much as they need them.
  5. QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 06:01 PM) Howard to Houston Here's your link.
  6. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 05:55 PM) That seems to be an organization thing. I'd call it a 2013 thing.
  7. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 05:39 PM) Is he in Ventura's doghouse? Getting benched twice in a week is very un-Robin-like I missed the game but supposedly he had quite the baserunning blunder last week in that 18-10 game or whatever it wound up being.
  8. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 05:36 PM) You know my thoughts on Viciedo...at this time, he's looking like a future platoon player. He needs a big 2nd half to cement his full-time starting spot going forward, in my opinion. He's still 24 so he's still early in his career, but his performance all around this year is very disappointing.
  9. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 05:26 PM) Not that it matters, but I don't think Viciedo is a good fit at all for 1B. It takes away his throwing arm, which is one of his biggest tools. Just so it's said, last year he was nearly an average fielder in LF at age 23. He was -3.0 runs in UZR. But like everyone else on the team, his fielding has collapsed this year. He's already at -3.6 runs in UZR this year and his full season pace is -12 runs. He's been about a win worse in LF this year than last year. The guy from last year I can take out in LF. The guy from this year's squad, well he needs to start hitting sometime. With a little bit more experience, the guy from 2012 could have become an average fielder out there, but like everyone else on the team he's taken a huge step backwards.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 04:39 PM) If that were the reason he wasn't here, he would have been called up a few weeks ago when that deadline passed. I'm still not sure this isn't too early to give him the callup.
  11. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 01:59 PM) We don't have to argue about whether or not the homers and RBIs make up for the strikeouts and low OBP and whatever -- that's why wOBA and wRC+ exist. wRC+ is park adjusted and league adjusted, and scaled so that league average is 100. This year, Adam Dunn currently was a 109 wRC+, which means when you add up all the good and all the bad, he's producing 9% better than a league average hitter. That is definitely something of value, but much worse than a typical AL 1B/DH. He could be very valuable to a contender that has a black hole at 1B or DH, but he isn't good enough to replace a decent player there. Of course, there was also a 1.5 month period where Adam Dunn was trying to listen to the people who say "oh if only he'd try to swing earlier in the count, make more contact, and go the other way" and was abjectly terrible as a direct consequence. That is also impacting his runs created right now as well.
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 09:47 AM) Well, assuming Rios and possibly DeAza are gone, Danks, Tekotte and Wells should get plenty of time the remainder of this year to prove whether they deserve to be on the 2014 O.D. roster. And it also wouldn't be a surprise to see Viciedo get playing time at 1B in August/September, if Konerko is moved, which opens up another spot. Again, if you're going the "full rebuild" route, what guys do in August and September should have very little bearing on whether or not they get starting positions on the 2014 roster. A guy who puts up a .500 OPS should still be your starting CF if he has some upside and is the best candidate you have for that position next year.
  13. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 09:36 AM) After this disaster of a season, they aren't going to be selling a lot of tickets anyways. Besides, that's such a small portion of the revenue anymore that it doesn't matter, yet you continually bring it up. Anyways, you give Danks playing time down the stretch in 2013 to prove whether or not he can play. When he almost certainly proves he's nothing more than a 4th outfielder, you can try and pick up guys that make sense in the outfield, or you can give Thompson a try, or Danks, or whoever you pick up in trades, or free agents, or whoever. Also, I'm not sure you want to follow a model that the Mariners are following, especially considering the 2 winning seasons they've had in the last 10 years. D2 might have a 10% chance of turning in a BJ Upton like season. Quibble with the numbers all you like, and yes he might have to rely on a ridiculous BABIP or something like that to pull off a season like that, but if the Sox are at the point of choosing between 40 year old retreads who might be tradeable for someone else's guys who didn't develop, I'd rather throw Danks out there.
  14. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 09:29 AM) Then good luck selling any season ticket to non-corporate clients.... We still have numerous other options in the trade market/s as well as off-season free agents. Look at it this way...following the M's model, are you better off giving Jordan Danks 250-300 at-bats in 2014 to prove he can't play everyday (the only position he'd fit with his skill set and limited power is CF, and he would be replaced by Thompson eventually)....or putting the likes of a Morse, Ibanez or Bay out there and then trying to flip them at the trade deadline for some prospects? I'd vastly rather go with Jordan Danks in the OF than Ibanez or Bay next year if the Sox are in the position to choose between them and only them, nothing better. Morse I'd tolerate as a 1b option at this point.
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 09:22 AM) And yet the odds of Jordan Danks being a starting OFer for Opening Day 2014 are minimal, at best. He's exactly the kind of player who could wind up a starting OF in 2014 if the dream of selling off completely comes true.
  16. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 08:43 AM) At least the passed balls should slow down.Phegley has 8 passed balls in 60 games in Charlotte. Flowers has 7 passed balls in 65 games in Chicago. I'd also like to think the breaking stuff might be a bit easier to catch in the minors. You should not expect this at all.
  17. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 08:43 AM) Don't expect an all-star. Expect a solid player who should be better than Flowers in nearly every area, once he settles in and relaxes. At least the passed balls should slow down. With fewer Ks. Don't expect him to hit right away. Expect that he may need more than a season to adapt to big league pitching. Expect that he'll come up and hit worse than Flowers. That should be the expectation with every prospect.
  18. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 4, 2013 -> 09:27 PM) Thompson and Herbek to Charlotte... QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 12:00 AM) According to? Zero confirmation of it this morning.
  19. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 07:25 AM) If the White Sox were to make a trade with the Rockies I would like to see them acquire David Dahl, who reminds me a lot of Grady Sizemore and even Mike Trout. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...62&c_id=col Can we all universally agree that comparing any prospect to Mike Trout is officially unfair?
  20. Hopefully this means they're actually going to play him regularly.
  21. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jul 4, 2013 -> 01:42 PM) So its OK for the entire Latin American world to stand by each other simply because of the color of their skin? WHy would, or should, Argentina or Chili give a rats ass about Bolivia? Just because they share the same skin color? A group of states that are aligned with each other politically and militarily with a long history of colonial issues with the United States?
  22. And people keep saying that we should move the Bobcats pick because it won't be a top pick in 2016.
  23. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 4, 2013 -> 02:29 PM) Need a MOd to merge this mess . You guys really aren't good at this.
  24. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 4, 2013 -> 01:08 PM) You've seen the salary numbers for next year, I'm sure of it. Do you think Dunn's presence has any bearing on our ability to extend/sign whoever we target? To me, it's worth every penny to gamble on getting nice prospects/players at the deadline next season (or, gasp, even be a winning team at the deadline!) Yes, I think Dunn's presence or absence has an impact on what we'll be spending money on. After the way he's performed over the last 3 years, including this month, I'd rather have $7 million than him next year. I wouldn't move him if we had to pick up more than that, but I'd call 1/2 of next year's salary enough.
