I didn't realize until I saw the pictures that I'd been here, Royal Gorge, Colorado. This is the area hit by one of the wildfires right now, formerly an incredibly gorgeous park.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 13, 2013 -> 07:26 PM) What rebels though, everyone there sucks I assume John McCain will tell us.

The White House has now, today, officially declared that they conclude Syria has, on a limited basis, deployed chemical weapons against the rebels. The U.S. will be sharing these results with the U.N. missions that have been monitoring the Syrian conflict. As a consequence, the White House indicates that the U.S. will now be significantly increasing its aid to the Syrian rebels. According to statements from the office of the National Security Adviser, that aid will include military support.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 13, 2013 -> 04:41 PM) Yes. No. Discomfort. Dammit, it keeps getting worse. Glad I could contribute.

Your comfort level has increased exponentially as the day has gone on? Weird.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 13, 2013 -> 04:14 PM) Spoelstra leaning towards starting LeBron at center tonight. We got an "I'll be ready to go" out of Parker.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 13, 2013 -> 03:17 PM) There's dozens of rulings all the time nobody but lawyers pay attention to. I'm kinda surprised this one came back 9-0, though. I'll have to read it later. From what I heard they split the decision...that the company could patent their process for identifying the gene but couldn't patent the code of the gene itself. What that means in terms of another company actually being able to develop a test for the gene in this case, for example, I'm just not sure.

And the NL's streak continues...

QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 13, 2013 -> 01:12 PM) In the second round, I don't think he was ever going to be a tough sign. It seemed like pre-draft, he was considered a tough sign if he went in the 3rd or 4th rounds as he was often projected. I expect him to sign at or below slot, now. A ball will be a real challenge for him, I'm fairly surprised at that. I hope he kills it down there. Not sure how this compares to college so I'll ask...how many innings might a guy coming out of high school be expected to have on his arm come draft time? If he's thrown a decent number of innings already this year, might they start him off in the bullpen at a higher level to give him the experience there?

Here's the actual damage map. Dozen or so tornado reports, 176 straight-line wind damage reports, 75+ hail damage reports so far.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 12, 2013 -> 08:23 PM) What's the weather like there now at game time? Doesn't look like any of the cells have hit the Cell directly yet, raining for the last hour plus, severe stuff everywhere around, heavy lightning. Tornado was on the ground near Joliet earlier. Just getting started. Stadium would have been emptied due to lightning if there were people there.

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Jun 12, 2013 -> 08:46 PM) What advantage does this give someone? You assume these people will make the right trade with the number. But markets are not rational, especially now with the Fed intervening. There is no guarantee that the market will move one way or the other if the corresponding number is +/-. There is / was nothing illegal here. Oil inventories came out last week and were worse than expected and the market was up. So if you had the number and you put on a bearish position and the number was bearish and the market went against you by going up, having the number did not benefit you. If you really believe a word of that, I'll be happy to take te insider info for a couple years an let you know how it turns out.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jun 12, 2013 -> 05:36 PM) um, how can anyone point at the dodgers for being at fault on this one? Kennedy hit Puig in the FACE, so Greinke hit someone in the back. That's normal baseball guys. THEN Kennedy intentionally hits the opposing PITCHER in the same shoulder he just came back from an injury for. THAT'S the most dickish move of this whole thing. I'm on Greinke's side this time There's a long series going back with the Dodgers and Diamondbacks at least 2 years, with Kennedy and Kershaw both involved with hitting people worth remembering too.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 12, 2013 -> 05:18 PM) Friday's game might be the most important Sox game they've ever played in Houston. Um...?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 12, 2013 -> 03:06 PM) That's fine, but when you have hitters to watch like Thomas, Konerko, Ordonez, Lee and Ray Durham, it's not so boring. Always the KW philosophy back at that time, entertain them with offense/homers. At least there was excitement about the arrival of young rookie starting pitchers with talent like Kip Wells that year. We also were one year away from being named the #1 farm system in MLB. Out of the guys you mention who aren't first ballot hall of famers, Durham had his first year with an .800+ OPS in 1998, and the other guys were either rookies or in their first moderately successful season.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jun 12, 2013 -> 02:43 PM) Gillaspie has done well with the glove. Maybe he coud hit a few more homers or at least doubles, but his average isn't bad He seems like he is just starting to come out of a real bad slump. He had something like a 3 for 40 stretch where if you watched him, he'd just stopped making good contact like he was earlier in the year. That's taking a toll on his numbers right now. Hopefully he drags his way out of this slump and learns a few things from it.

You know another time when the Sox had a really sloppy team? In fact, now that I checked, they led the league in errors. 1999. They were worse on defense than the Rays. Sloppiest team I can remember off the top of my head. You know why? Rebuilding year. I'm glad no one here thinks that's the thing the Sox need to do.

QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Jun 12, 2013 -> 02:27 PM) In 26 ABs. You get worked up about people wanting Phegley and then roll out some sampling bias. Great! You're 100% right! He was due to get some hits falling at some point. Now lets see if he can get on a little bit of a run here and if not, then late in the season, when the next guy should get a look, we'll give him a look. That's what you're supposed to do with young guys. They're supposed to struggle, sometimes for years, before finally finding a groove with the bats.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 12, 2013 -> 02:27 PM) several thousand? I think you're off by an of magnitude there Don't worry, it's not possible. Otherwise it's just be another case of the financial system being a form of legalized theft from average investors.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 12, 2013 -> 02:21 PM) Dunn for Smoak straight up, Mariners pick up $1M this year and $2M next year with the Sox paying the difference. Would you do it? I would. They'd at least have someone to plug in to take a shot on. As it is, there are 2 moves to make re: Dunn, either you get a team like the Dodgers (and maybe only them) to take on his salary in exchange for a good player, saving them from having to trade anyone of value, or you dump Dunn and eat his deal yourself. You only do #2 though if you have someone to plug in who is worth playing. Dumping Dunn for ex. and plugging in Casper Wells does nothing, and you actually get worse offensively. I'm really iffy with Smoak on the grounds that this is his last pre-arb season. In my eyes, he's a bill for $3 million next year that I'm not sure I'd want to pay. If the Sox keep him, effectively they haven't saved any money and they've cut back on production (yes, it's true, Smoak's been that bad, Dunn's easily outperformed him). Double the money they pick up and it starts making a bit more sense to me. As written though, it looks a lot like the Sox trading Dunn away for $3 million in total savings. -
Well-phrased.

Apparently there are 3 tiers of importance for the release of the "Consumer confidence" index numbers. Normal proles get the numbers at 10:00 a.m., people who pay enough money to Reuters get the numbers at 9:55, and a select group of those can actually get the numbers even earlier: 9:54:58. Thankfully it's not possible to conduct several thousand trades in those 2 seconds or in those 5 minutes, otherwise this would be legalized insider trading.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 12, 2013 -> 01:57 PM) So, what about rain totals? Depends on how it forms/shapes up. These things will dump large amounts of rain in short periods of time, but they can also move quickly. I don't know how you'd predict the rate its going to move at until it starts forming. Flooding certainly possible, several inches possible if things are slow enough.
