2011 ALDS Detroit Tigers vs. New York Yankees Thread
QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 10:14 PM) Pitch Rick Porcello, give Yanks all the momentum. I mean...it was against AJ Burnett. I've been ripping the Tigers rotation for a month now and even I don't think that's a bad matchup.

2nd time in MLB history that a rookie has gone 7 innings or more and given up 2 hits or fewer in a playoff game. The First time? Last Friday.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 12:07 AM) Not meaning to flame at all, but do the Rays losing to the same team two years in a row and getting faceplanted AT HOME by Texas change anybody's opinion of Maddon and/or Martinez? Texas is good, but what's up with getting smoked at home like that two years in a row? I don't think that woulda played well if it had been the Sox in the playoffs losing to the same team two years in a row and getting eliminated at the Cell. I realize Maddon/Martinez did a nice job rallying past Boston, but quick exits in the playoffs are not ideal. It wouldn't have played well...but take note...the White Sox faceplanted against the Rays the only time they made the playoffs in the last 5 years. And at least we'd have made the d*mn playoffs.

Reclamation Projects
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 01:08 AM) No matter what's wrong with Kazmir, it would still be impossible for me to get upset at the thought of him wearing a Charlotte Knights jersey. Hell, stranger things have happened in the game of baseball, and a guy like him turning into even an effective lefty specialist would be a huge gain because (at least in theory) it would allow us to ditch Ohman and his salary. Will Ohman gets a whopping $2.5 million this season. Moving his salary really doesn't do much of anything to change anything. Would be acceptable to move him if there was a player coming back (I still don't know how the Yankees didn't deal for him).

Chris Sale to be Moved to the Rotation in 2012
QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 10:31 PM) I thought the Sox were supposed to be very active participants. Quentin, Floyd, Danks, Thornton, if those guys are all moved I would consider that active. Of course, what they get in return remains to be seen. The issue is...and he's partially right...moving those guys does not make the White Sox better in 2012 unless some team makes a big mistake and gives up a Daniel Hudson caliber MLB ready player. That means, if the Sox are currently the 3rd best team in the division, they won't move upwards from this offseason; if anything they'd move downwards. The only way the Sox are going to move upwards, frankly, is by improvement from within. The one positive there is that the Sox have enormous room for improvement from within...considering that they have 2 former all-stars who got nearly 1000 PA's and between them put up 2 of the 20 worst seasons in MLB history, a former Cy Young winner who had a terrible season, a developing rookie 3b, a struggling young 2b, and Juan Pierre...it's really not hard for this team to outproduce last year's team if they have a good offseason and someone gets them motivated.

2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread
QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 11:55 PM) I can't believe grown adults, people I respect on here, still think that Ozzie should have benched Rios and Dunn. It slays me. You are gonna be just as frustrated with the new manager when he plays guys who make the loot. But hopefully that new manager's scheme won't be called going "all-in" and sacrificing things like the development of our top pitching prospect trying to win those games at the same time. If those guys are playing and playing that badly, then no one will be able to pretend we're trying to win the division.

QUOTE (MAX @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 07:02 PM) I'm not sure you are right about that. They might make an exeption to what is generally percieved as a rule simply because they fully realize how they structured his contract. I would bet they'd eat 2M. The sox won't eat that money unless they get a legit piece back, and history has already showed us that AJ is difficult to move.

QUOTE (VictoryMC98 @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 07:37 PM) If that is a plus about him or here.. I don't want him. There should be pressure to win every year.. ZERO tolerance for Failure. Were used to tolerating that now. It'd just be nice to see a path forward.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 06:27 PM) I think they're going to wait for Hamels/Cain to hit FA. They didn't bite on Greinke or Ubaldo, the latter on an extremely team-friendly contract. I can't see them doing so for Danks. They might well go after Danks...but you're just not getting their top guys for him.

Chris Sale to be Moved to the Rotation in 2012
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 06:26 PM) The more I see the Rays put K machines on the mound year after year, the more I'm OK with the David Price/Jeremy Hellickson strategy. Shelf life seems to be an issue if you're going blow an elbow, but not if you need to build strength. David Price never was a full-time, full season reliever. Price pitched 123 innings in 2008 in his first full season post-draft (and made a couple playoff appearances). He then threw 162 innings in 2009 before going to 208 in 2010 (plus playoffs). Same story for Hellickson, He threw a few games out of the Rays pen in 2010, but totaled over 150 innings. Neither of these guys did anything like what was done to Sale...Sale was stretched out to be a 140-150 innings guy coming out of college. He then had his total innings cut in half this year to 71. Both of those guys were treated the same...the Rays gradually raised their innings and didn't stick them in the pen until they had accumulated the number of innings they wanted them to get. The White Sox cut Sale's innings in half this year, and basically are taking a huge gamble if they try to push him back to 150 next year. The Price/Hellickson strategy is the one I advocated in the spring and still think was the right move now...gradually buildilng up his innings. It's not what the Sox did.

Gardner is also arb-eligible this offseason, so he will be going up in price quickly.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 06:03 PM) Definitely not in the traditional show style where the main situation would be completely unresolved. Breaking Bad doesn't leave gimmicky cliff-hangers like that while still setting up huge amounts of tension. Gimmicky?

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 05:54 PM) Every writer who comments on the subject has Martinez as the #1 candidate on the Sox's short list of potential managers, you act as though the Martinez excitement/interest has been manufactured by the fans. Really, every writer has Martinez as the #1 candidate on the Sox list? I'm actually surprised by this, I feel like there have been a whole lot of people who have written Alomar was the #1 on the Sox list.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 05:52 PM) And the Red Sox still have to figure out the Theo Epstein situation, something's going to happen there whether it be a promotion or exodus. So basically...the White Sox are the only team in position to make a rapid move right now.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 05:49 PM) Gingrich says a lot of stuff that won't help. But he has a unique paring of policy record... he's got a lot of conservative policy points to provide that the right will like, but he also has a history of getting things done with a Dem Prez which appeals to moderates. He's also a known name, and that tends to carry weight with old school GOP'ers. The keys for him are, can he get the funds raised, and can he avoid a Biden-esque verbal screw-up. He also has this problem. (No that's not necessarily a problem. I just wanted to add in that picture.)
