QUOTE (VictoryMC98 @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 10:24 PM) So the GM handing out those contracts like candy isn't at all to blame? ( yes I know some were acquired via trades, waivers). For some reason you give him a free pass.. Why? IMO, there are ZERO managers out there that could have turned this club into a winner this year.. ZERO, it is just built bad. Because I don't know how many of the decisions were kenny and how many were jerry and how many were Ozzie. Kennys job, IMO, depends entirely on what he told the chairman at te start of the offseason last year. If he said there's a 75% chance of failure and the chairman said to spend the money anyway, then Kenny passed the failed decisions upstairs. Personally I think Kenny should have resigned in protest of the fact that he couldn't fire his manager or even hitting coach on his own.

QUOTE (VictoryMC98 @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 10:11 PM) Balta, I think you are drawing at straws trying to find anything you can bad and pin it on Ozzie. I can do it easier if you want. 3 years, $325 million payroll, .500 record, 0 division titles. I said all along that's the only way to fairly evaluate the manager was w-l in aggregate. He's utterly failed at his job to win. I'm now trying to figure out why. He's gone because of the losses. Now the job is to figure out what went wrong.

QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 10:10 PM) Yeah, I remember that. It was nice. The rendition of the Star Spangled Banner at Buckingham Palace on 9/12 was one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. But that doesn't mean that two of their most symbolic buildings were destroyed, another one badly damaged and 2,500+ of their citizens murdered. It's nice that they showed such support, but it wasn't an attack on them and it didn't shake any of those countries to the absolute core like it did to ours. Weren't over 100 of those 2700 actually Uk citizens?

Republican 2012 Nomination Thread
QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 09:29 PM) I'm not too certain he will to a great degree. Remember his roots are as a Dem. It didn't switch parties as much as the Dems left him. And for his career, the switch really came at a great time. He will follow a solid strategy and will not make a mistake on the trail. He's going to be tough to beat. I believe he already had to repudiate his proposal to allow acrosstheborder earth care sales. Anything he's done that was good for people is a weakness for him.

Republican 2012 Nomination Thread
QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 09:24 PM) I actually do like his stance on immigration. Prefers personnel to walls. Signed and supported a Texas law to offer in-state tuition to students regardless of their parents legal status. Stuff like that. Now much of his Texas fundraising some from businesses that benefit from these workers, so that may have influenced a little. No wonder Kap hates him, I find him a rather decent nominee on a couple hot button issues for me. Don't worry, he'll spend the next 6 months repudiating all of that.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 09:16 PM) Well of course you want to limit the discussion to the feds. Otherwise the numbers get bigger and the talking points aren't as strong. Well, I thunk the underfunding problem gets even bigger if you count the states. The difference right now is that the states can't issue us treasuries.

QUOTE (VictoryMC98 @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 09:18 PM) So I understand... Ozzie had zero to do with Rios's either 10 or 11 correct? He might well have gotten on Rios's case coming in to 2010. I think he let him have it easy coming into 2011.

QUOTE (VictoryMC98 @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 09:09 PM) Then explain how Rios had a great start of the gate last year, how Paulie, seemed to be ok.. as well. Didn't Carlos Q also come out of the gate swinging hot? Also Dunn's first series in CLE, didn't seem to affect his performance at all. I don't buy your theory... I thinkbrios worked hard coming into 2010 after he had that terrible 09 and then partied his way into 2011.

... it's about time
QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 09:00 PM) OK, I'll accept that. How much should the athlete be motivated on his own and how much is the manager? Here's gonna be a mind blowing answer. Its the managers job to figure that out for his players. Even the most motivated athlete migt not do what is best to get himself going. A managers (and coaches) job is to figure that riddle out.

... it's about time
QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 08:54 PM) I'm interested, how does the manager prepare his players? What have Dunn's other manager's done for him that Ozzie isn't? I think that in spring training Ozzie just assumes that if a guy is a veteran he knows how to get ready and spends most of his tome pushing the rookies. It's the same philosophy you hear articulated from walker... He's a veteran so he should know how to work out of this. My example is Pierre. He comes in with weight training and such, and he's one of Ozzies guys. I think ozzie let's him off easy in ST on batting and fielding because he's obviously in shape. So, the last 2 years, Pierre has had terrible aprils, when he never did that in his career until he got to Chicago. Some guys might work well like that, but a lot of these guys need that extra push, and if you're one of Ozzies guys...you won't get that push.

Man defends property against 'illegal' thieves....
One more thing to add. I'm not out to get you. I hate suspending people back here since I'm a bloody liberal and half the people are annoyed at me anyway. If you're advocating a position, even passionately, go ahead, that's why we split this forum off. Just try to think about how it sounds sometimes. Saying that a person deserves to die because you don't like his politics will get my ire. Saying that a murderer deserved to die is a differed beast. I hope that's a little clear.

QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 08:23 PM) Clinton came after 12 years of having gramps running the country. We had the swagger, but we were shuffling in a walker. Clinton came in, blowing a mad sax, rock music blaring and we combined swagger with youthful exuberance. Boom we started borrowing and spending. The president can't change policy enough to really make a huge impact, but the president can change the mood of the country. Clinton started borrowing and spending? Do you realize how many graphs I can post on how incorrect that is?

Man defends property against 'illegal' thieves....
Since there isn't a constitution or anything like that for this website, I don't feel bad in saying that the standard is "I know it when i'll see it." What happened a few years ago was that we had a couple posters who decided it would be entertaining to start a new thread bragging and celebrating every time a criminal was executed. You might well feel that it's a good thing every time that happens, but after a while it becomes "I'm taunting liberals because killing people is good." No one is going to begrudge your right to feel good when a criminal is killed if that is the kind of person you are. But we dont want it to wind up being that people are just being taunted. So no, advocating execution of a rapist is not beyond the pale. That is a subject that can be legitimately debated. The death penalty itself and it's use is fair game. All I'd say is...it becomes a problem when it becomes a problem.
