Are the Phillies that good?
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 05:12 PM) What's the average age for the guys that matter? Like Raul Ibanez is gone after this year and Jose Contreras is a FA after this year, I think? And the way their system produces, they get the benefit of the doubt. Just this year alone they've had John Mayberry Jr. sport an .844 OPS, Vance Worley go 11-1, and Antonio Bastardo produce a .110 BAA and 232 ERA+. The system ultimately produced a 28-year old star in Hunter Pence. Dominic Brown can't even get a chance because they're so loaded. Halladay, Lee, Howard, Utley, Rollins, and Oswalt are all getting up there.

QUOTE (sunofgold @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 05:07 PM) Somebody made a mistake in the title of this thread. I rechecked my schedule. It is Charlotte Knights @ Rochester Red Wings. Who is your favorite Knight ? De Aza, Flowers, Lucy, Viciedo... actually Rios, Dunn, Beckham should be Knights.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 04:55 PM) And there's no end in sight. The Phillies have the oldest average roster in MLB by a non-trivial margin.

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 04:48 PM) That is not what I was referring to. Are they covering this story? Are they running a story about the White House denying knowing about this program while the National Security team in the White House was briefed on it? Maybe if they remove their rose colored glasses, just once. Well, considering that the report that the White House had 3 different people briefed on the program came from the LA Times, I'd say it's quite clear that the MSM just wants to shove this story away. After all, how better than to hide it than to continue investigating and reporting?

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 04:28 PM) I was listening to Stone talk about how much more difficult it is to be a successful GM in the NL. You don't have the DH to cover up your mistakes. You also have to invest in having a quality bench. Adam Dunn agrees that the DH covers up for your mistakes.

QUOTE (forrestg @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 04:25 PM) I like deAza, leading off if he got a few more free passes he bould be even better as our leadoff man. He typically walked at twice his current walk rate in the minors. I think he feels good and is swinging a lot because of it.

Guys, to be fair, the program he's talking about was something of a complete and utter disaster of the worst order. You might want to read up on it a bit.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 04:04 PM) At $7 a share, I don't know that you could call that "high risk". QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 04:10 PM) Which was my exact point. If major bank(s) in Europe go down the circular file, major US banks will feel that. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 04:12 PM) Unless you are Warren Buffet, no. $7 a share is more of lottery ticket range. I can only conclude from this set of posts that 2k5 believes BigRuss22 is the Oracle of Omaha. Welcome sir! I used to work for one of your subsidiaries.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 04:04 PM) At $7 a share, I don't know that you could call that "high risk". Then in that case, it's low-risk high reward and he'd be foolish not to invest right? I'd say there's a substantial downside risk there still.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 04:03 PM) Good to see that he's still hitting ahead of Dayan and De Aza though. I mean, he's only broken the wrong way on fly balls 700 times this year according to Ozzie...if we demote him in the lineup he might get mad and just run the wrong way on purpose.

Actually the right answer is pretty much 100% given how the question was asked. It's just 98%+ that say it is mostly caused by human carbon emissions.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 03:35 PM) The more that stuff leaks out of Europe, the more I am not sure about messing with the banks right now. If there is a run on the big banks in Europe, that virus will probably hop the pond. High Risk, High Reward.

Transitioning to 2012
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 03:21 PM) If the lineup as a whole lacks OBP, then go get someone with OBP. If you want more speed, then go get that. But the artificial limitation you are placing just doesn't make sense, IMO. The lineup doesn't lack OBP...that's provided by the boppers. The problem is that it lacks OBP outside of the boppers. That means...it lacks someone who can lead off, unless De Aza can fill that role.

QUOTE (sunofgold @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 03:07 PM) This is weird. I have in my schedule that we are playing the Twins in Minnesota today. But now it looks like we have a game in Rochester. An exhibition game on our day off?

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 03:15 PM) Capitalism is the engine, and the hunter, and you need it to grow. But like any aggressive creature, if you want to stay alive around it, it needs training, and a leash. Both are needed, not one or the other. A toy poodle on a leash means you get stomped. A fight-trained pit bull with no control does the same, just in a different way. The problem now is that the pit-bull has figured out that he can bribe people to take the leash off.

Transitioning to 2012
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 03:11 PM) I hate this argument... who leads off? You don't build a roster looking for a leadoff hitter. You build a roster with the best players you can get for each and every slot, then after that is all set, you make the best lineup possible. Introducing the lineup location earlier in the process is just artificially reducing the potential talent pool to build a team from. Give it a little bit more thought though. All of our OBP is concentrated in Konerko and Dunn if De Aza isn't around. Maybe some of the other guys can provide some, but there's no one with a big history of it. Alexei, Morel, Viciedo, Quentin, AJ, Beckham...that's a very swing-happy lineup. You may not like the thought of looking for a leadoff hitter, but there's no one there who really sets up the lineup in front of what hopefully should be the boppers. There's no obvious speed threat and no one who you can count on to put up a .340 OBP unless someone hits .330. And if any of them (Beckham, Morel) struggle...then that is a lineup that is weak both at the top and bottom.

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 02:24 PM) from people overreacting to 1 loss and tossing out the latest Soxtalk buzzword. I don't think that there's an overreaction to 1 loss happening here, I think there's a reaction to the way Sergio's full suite of blown saves have happened. - Catch All Anything Thread
