QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 09:17 PM) Tim Pawlenty's Plan to Destroy The World It seems like it's just another version of the Fair (lol) Tax with some extra-dumb populism thrown in. I bet if I google "private army" i'll find that private companies do similar things. Tim Pawlenty opposes having a military!

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 07:30 PM) The Boston Tea Party and ensuing rebellion was about high taxes on business and getting rid of Big Government. Also to keep Big Government's hands off my guns/medicare. And then we stormed the beaches at Normandy for the right to dismantle Medicare.

Financial News
QUOTE (Cknolls @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 07:04 PM) Well inflation is caused by the rise in wages which leads to the rise in prices. So that has nothing to do with Keynesianism. Actually the fact that you're right is pretty much the key element of the whole topic.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 06:19 PM) a strong Republican candidate forces the democrats to offer an equally strong candidate and the result would be LEGITIMATE candidates and politicians. Huh?

The environment thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 05:01 PM) Maybe. Still begs the question... agree or disagree? It's a complicated question to answer. The biggest issue is that Americans appear to be really bad at evaluating how much they're actually spending on fuel. That's how the price spike from $1.50 to $3 gets less coverage than the price spike from $3 to $3.50 even though the former took more out of your wallet. If you were to raise the gas tax as a method of pushing fuel discipline, then you're asking people to evaluate while standing at an auto dealership how much they'll save due to an extra flat dollar on top of the price of a variable commodity between vehicles that get say 28 and 33 mpg. That's an inhuman amount of planning to get done while auto-shopping. On the other hand, if you accompish better mileage through mileage standards, then the consumer is paying up front the extra $10k it takes to get a Volt, but the consumer is also implicitly making a guess on fuel prices when calculating whether or not it is financially worth while. Of course my answer is "we should do both", but following the hypothetical...I'm probably slightly in favor of his gas tax method, because that covers additional government financing and directly hits the heaviest fuel users more than the guy who has to bike home here in an hour or so. It's interesting though that if the CAFE standards were really, really cranked up and Detroit actually hit them that the CAFE standards probably will work across the board pretty well if they're implemented well. Politically of course that tradeoff is dead on arrival.

Official 2011 MLB Draft - Day 2
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 03:57 PM) No. Just wondering, but when was the last HS player we took who panned out for us? Because I think the last time we took a HS kid in the 1st RD was like Kris Honel in 2002. How do you define "Panned out"? We've had some and traded them. Ryan Sweeney comes to mind there.

2010-2011 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 03:27 PM) Yeah, I don't really see what we get back from a Boozer deal being anything good. As I noted previously...the Bulls cannot be in the "Playing for cap space" mode any more. Even if guys are overpaid, if they make the Bulls better, they should hereon accept that the guy is overpaid. The goal is no longer cap space, it is to make moves that make the team better.

Official 2011 MLB Draft - Day 1
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 02:22 PM) Ok, then agree to disagree, because I think never giving him a shot to start is completely asinine. Now there's a difference...you're saying "not giving him a shot to start is asinine"...which is something I might well agree with. But that would be an organizational choice, not reflecting on the draft pick itself. The only reason why we'd never give him a chance to start is that we went 6 deep in starters without him. At which point, we had a choice...lock him in the minors forever as the 7th starter, or put him in the pen.
