Why do we open in Cleveland?
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 26, 2011 -> 03:01 PM) 20 degrees warmer on average in 2 weeks? Pass the bong. The difference between the average historical high temp and low temp in Cleveland for those dates is 5 degrees, and there is no guarantee that it holds up any year anyway. April weather in this neck of the woods is a crapshoot. It might be 35 it might be 75. I can't find a link but someone did a study of this after 2007 and found that if you bypassed the first week in Cleveland and Minnesota, you'd eliminate something like 80% of the potential snowouts.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 26, 2011 -> 03:01 PM) I'm surprised any of them are still alive to be honest. Radiation is not a fast killer. It is a slow, painful, godawful killer.

QUOTE (Tex @ Mar 26, 2011 -> 02:50 PM) Thank you sir. So they were using sea water because it was plentiful? Because after the tsunami it was all they had. They were pumping in every bit of water they can find, because "dry rods" are worse than "salt-crusted wet rods". Dry rods are going to be pumping out radiation into the air.

Why do we open in Cleveland?
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 26, 2011 -> 02:38 PM) The post referred to the first couple of weeks of the season. There would be at least 10 games in 2 weeks. Besides, how much warmer is it guaranteed to be in Cleveland or Chicago or Minneapolis on April 15th as opposed to April 1st? The average temperature in Cleveland on April 15th is almost 20 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than on April 1. The average low temperature on April 1 is ~34 degrees, the average low on April 15th is ~42 degrees.

2011 MLB Catch-All Thread
You said "Barring injury"...but that's sorta the whole point. I don't know that I'd say any of them are "Slowing Down" (Although Lee really wasn't the Lee of 2008-2009 for the first month or two after arriving in Texas)...I'd be much more worried with that team about injury.

Japan Tsunami
QUOTE (Tex @ Mar 26, 2011 -> 02:22 PM) I know there is a small difference in the boiling point of sea water versus freshwater, but it seems rather minimal in this situation, or is it? Why do they make a big deal about using saltwater, now freshwater? The difference is not the boiling point, it is what happens in the event of evaporation. If you evaporate fresh water, you're left with only small amounts of deposits. If you evaporate ocean water, you're left with substantial deposits of salt. If you're pumping salt water into a reactor around fuel rods, and that water is evaporating, that deposits the salt on the fuel rods. The fuel rod design is such that they're supposed to get really hot in the middle but have reduced temperature at the edges where they release that heat into the water. A diffusion gradient is set up in temperature. However, if you wrap the fuel rod in salt, you create another barrier to effective heat removal into the water. The salt acts as an insulation layer, causing the temperature in the fuel rod to go up as heat removal becomes less efficient. If heat removal becomes less efficient, this can cause the rods to reach their solidus (melting point), at which point the rod integrity will fail, you have a meltdown, and potential release of the material from the rods. Furthermore, salt in water is an electrolyte, it's corrosive. If you're pumping salt water through metal pipes, that dramatically enhances the corrosion of those pipes and can cause additional spillage.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Mar 26, 2011 -> 01:56 PM) Just off the top of my head, Kareem Abdul Jabaar, Ralph Sampson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Bill Walton, Alonzo Mourning, Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, Moses Malone, Rick Smitts, Shaquille O'Neal, Robert Parrish, Mark Eaton, Dikembe Mutombo...might be missing a few more but damn. Mourning was only 6'10".

Why do we open in Cleveland?
QUOTE (knightni @ Mar 26, 2011 -> 01:19 PM) I've been saying this for the last 10 years at least. Why can't MLB do this? Well, if they wait until CO2 levels hit about 430 ppm, they won't need to.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 26, 2011 -> 12:49 PM) I am going to make the radical prediction that 1st round picks will still get guaranteed contracts in the new CBA. There may not be an NBA season next year though, which is obviously a wild card. Yeah, 1st round picks will probably still get guaranteed contracts, I don't think that is controversial. The lack of an NBA season is what I meant. No one will be signing or getting paid in those contracts if a lockout starts.

As of 2011, the United States will have scientifically based, manageable catch-limits in place and being enforced for all 528 species of fish comprising U.S. fisheries. As a consequence, a number of species are recovering dramatically, improving the economics of the whole industry.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 26, 2011 -> 12:43 PM) How about this: admit your team, which lost in the sweet 16 in one of the worst years in recent college basketball history for top teams, wasn't nearly as good as you thought it was. Because the fact is, that's what actually happened. You dominated a Big 10 which had 5 teams lose in the first weekend of the tournament, and zero make the elite 8. Impressive. You can explain all you want about their season, but top teams are judged on what they do in the tournament. I'm not being a hater considering the facts are on my side. And we'll see about Sullinger and Buford. Thomas coming back makes sense, but Sullinger is an idiot if he passes up being a top 5 pick to return and risk more NBA scouts realizing he's Sean May part 2. I could sort of understand Buford coming back since he'd be a senior and has confidence he'd improve his stock. But he'd be taking a risk too since he's probably a #20 ish pick in the draft right now. Come back and struggle, and your first round pick status, and guaranteed money, are gone. There's no guaranteed money if there is no CBA agreement.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Mar 26, 2011 -> 11:41 AM) Not gonna happen. They would need the salary of the New York Yankees. They can afford it easily. They were paying more than that for the team they had a few years ago. The question is going to be whether the NBA re-writes the rules to prevent it. I still can't imagine how 20 teams would think that is a good thing for them.- The environment thread

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 26, 2011 -> 09:33 AM) Olajuwon was a seven foot tall soccer player who didn't pick up a basketball until he was like 16. Think about for a minute. Can you imagine Shaq spending 90 minutes on the pitch? I know Shaq was a brute force, but Hakeem was truly a freak of nature. They both were freaks of nature. Hakeem was almost certainly faster and more nimble. Though Shaq was not as fast, he was much larger, and was able to move plenty quick. It's how you define "athletic". Pure speed, or combination of speed/power.- White Sox acquire Gaby Hernandez from Royals

QUOTE (chw42 @ Mar 25, 2011 -> 10:49 PM) I still think the Phils are better, just because that pitching staff gives them a good chance to win everyday. That offense doesn't need to be anything more than average with the starters they have. My worries about the Phils are all about age/health. Even with that rotation, the guys regularly give a lot of innings, but all of them but Hamels are old. Lee and Oswalt both have, to me, started showing signs of wear and tear, and Halladay's just as old. - The Democrat Thread
