  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 05:21 PM) Was he hanging out with Cabrera? (semi-serious question) The injury was a month and 3 days before the Kitties traded for Miggy.
  2. Rather than fighting, I'll just say again...intervening on behalf of the people of Libya by killing the people of Libya continues to be a concept I can not accept.
  3. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 03:04 PM) It would be nice though to have a few at AA that are rising stars, if not contributing this year then ready to make the club next year. Unfortunately, we'll be forced into signing a FA or trading for SP's next offseason, and we all know the price in either route to be ridiculous. If the Sox win this year, keeping Buehrle is up to him. If Mark decides to call it a career, that's $14 million we have available to fill that spot. Jackson is very likely to be replaced with Sale, and even if they have to bring in a Garland to give them 100 innings along with Sale, it's very do-able with that kind of money.
  4. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 05:25 PM) Problem is, they already looked into that scenario in the offseason and we're not pleased with the potential outcome of going that route. Now if that situation does become true you have an even older AJ and Paulie, and FAs to be in Beuhrle and EJax, and an expensive Peavy. The pieces that still would have a ton of value is Danks and Thorton, besides that almost every player with a large contract wouldn't bring in that much, and what is brought in probably wouldn't be enough together with what we currently have in terms of young players to build a winner. It would take a few years of draft/development/trades to get the team back to contention. But...aside from 2 guys, Peavy and Teahen, the Sox could almost certainly get rid of all of those guys and get something back. Their contracts are not prohibitively bad.
  5. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Mar 17, 2011 -> 09:19 PM) I'm in the camp of way too late. Our president has no balls. At all. You know Kap, I'm actually surprised by this response in comparison to your Egypt response. Not because you think Obama's making a mistake, but because of the Islamist connections of the Eastern Libyan population. You were scared enough of the Muslim Brotherhood, who were by all accounts on the outside of the Egyptian revolution, that you said the Egyptian revolution was an awful thing on the grounds that the Brotherhood were an Islamist group who might gain some power by that revolution. In this case, if the revolution wins, the Libyan state is likely to become much more of an Islam-based state. That seems like the kind of thing you'd be strongly opposing.
  6. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 02:03 PM) Do you believe his home/road splits the last two seasons are legit? If so, maybe it should be a home/road platoon. 2008 he crushed anywhere, but that was TCQ, a whole different person. At this point with Carlos, we sorta have to see what we get. If he comes out of the gates and struggles or gets hurt, then play him as much or as little as he earns. No one can honestly tell me which of his yearly splits will be the ones that represent this year.
  7. A fairly famous 2002 speech by a relatively gifted orator...with a handful of words changed.
  8. QUOTE (Lillian @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 02:00 PM) I agree entirely. This year, the staff is good enough that even if someone were lost, it wouldn't be that hard to find another pitcher to be the 5th starter, with everyone else capable of moving up in the rotation. Next year, there will be several spots to fill. You might simply say; "Let's worry about next year, next year", and that's a reasonable position to take. My thought was that it would make sense to try to acquire a young quality arm now, as both insurance for this year, and to fill some of the holes that will need to be filled next season. The big flaw is...if acquiring the young arm hurts this team this season, they're likely to be in sell mode next offseason. It won't matter if they grabbed an ok young pitcher from somewhere in the Phillies org. This season we're "All in"...so if we don't win the division and get playoff revenue, that means we lost the bet and we're going to have to cut back on salary. The only way this would be the right move is if Milledge could be counted on to outperform Quentin for the season, and that's at best dubious.
  9. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 01:54 PM) You mean like jackasses accidentally poisoning themselves and ending up in the ER by sucking down potassium iodine because of something that happened half way around the world? At least we'll continue to prevent goiters.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 01:01 PM) Yeah this is the wrong time to be caught with your pants down. I imagine we will see plenty of reaction, and over-reactions, in the United States over nuclear power. At least in my eyes, over-reaction is exactly what you want.
  11. QUOTE (Lillian @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 12:47 PM) Jordan4life, So, just whom do the Phillies think they're going to get to provide the right handed offense they need, if they aren't willing to give up anything? Look at the bats that became available last year for practically nothing. Ramirez, Burrell (who went on to win a title), Jose Guillen, probably a bunch of others I'm forgetting.
  12. A state judge has issued a temporary restraining order on the passed bill due to the violation of state law in its passage. Important to note...this is not on the legal question of whether or not the bill is a financial bill that requires the full quorum. Should the Republicans so desire, they can of course re-pass the bill with the appropriate procedures. Esp. now that the Dems have returned.
  13. Not sure whether you're talking about for basketball or network television original programming. If you mean the latter, it's May.
  14. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 09:20 AM) Is McPherson gonna stick around in Charlotte? Always a good insurance IN case Morel ain't hitting worth a lick and Teahen doesn't magically find a glove.. Yes, he's signed to a minor league deal, there's no reason why he won't be in Charlotte.
  15. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 09:13 AM) Even though I still think Morel is the better option overall, I do have fears that Brent's hitting will be very much like Chris Getz in his first full year. I'd be content with that. .672 OPS, .324 OBP from Getz his first year, couple weeks where he was about the only guy hitting anything. I'm more worried about an Andersonian .290 OBP, or an Andersonian .604 OPS/.280 OBP first half that causes Ozzie to decide to bench him randomly.
  16. XKCD (NSFW) on my morning routine.
  17. Balta FTW!
  18. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 03:13 AM) I'd counter this by saying he's probably still in the bottom third of starting PG's in the league when it comes to 1 on 1 defense. However, in Thibodeau's defensive system, in which interior defense is such a key element, it's not going to be a dealbreaker if the opposition beat Rose off the dribble, because you've got the likes of Noah and Asik waiting inside. Kind of like Howard with the Magic really (when you look at someone like Nelson). That's why I'd argue Howard is a real MVP candidate because no-one impacts both ends of the court as much as he does in the NBA (but that's an argument for another time). Compared to December/November, it's night and day.
  19. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Mar 17, 2011 -> 10:47 PM) Oohhh... So, is the blue ray worth it? You can see the strings holding the ship up in 3-D.
  20. QUOTE (juddling @ Mar 17, 2011 -> 10:54 PM) Knowing that show was on Fox, it's fate does make a bit of sense. Let's give Fox some credit. They could always cancel Greg the Bunny and Bring it back in 5 years.
  21. So, when do we authorize airstrikes against the foreign fighters in Bahrain?
  22. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 06:51 AM) Ozzie was also quoted saying, he will not take the best bat, but whatever works best for the team. Another hint at Morel getting the nod at 3B. I know this is the right decision, but somehow, I really wish Morel was making it easy on us.
  23. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 17, 2011 -> 07:08 PM) Can I ask you a question? Let's say the Sox did put Sale in AAA to start the year. They don't bring him up until the end of August and when they do they place him in the bullpen. Prior to this, the Sox use a bunch of AAAA type players to fill this spot. At the same time, Will Ohman serves as our left-handed setup man and is forced to face more right-handed hitters than he should. The Sox end up losing the division to the Twins by one game. Are you still happy? Would you have wished you had Sale in the bullpen all year? The way Sale is pitching right now, I might think that we'd lost the division because of a game Sale lost.
  24. Sale laboring again, 2 on 1 out.
  25. Carlos Gomez is 2/2 with a run scored. Morel is 0/3 with a K. Quentin is 0/3, Pierzynski 0/2, both hitting around .170 on the spring. Jackson, Ramirez, Dunn, and Rios have the Sox's 4 hits off of the Brewers. Marcum only pitched 3 innings.
