Michael Young
The issue with Young, other than $, is that he's a negative defender, and even the people who don't like the fancy new advanced stats will agree on that one; he doesn't help you much on defense. Adding young helps your offense but makes your IF defense a lot worse compared with Morel (not, however, compared to Teahen). The fact that Young is a negative defender offsets a lot of the value he does bring with the bats. If Brent Morel is a plus defender this year, then there's every reason to think he'd be almost as valuable as Young, just in a different way. And if Morel carries himself well with the bat...which is entirely possible...then he could be a more valuable player than Young this year...and very likely will be next year.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 9, 2011 -> 08:47 AM) The Patriot Act extension failed last night, with 277 in favor and 148 against. It was brought under a rule which would not allow amendments, but passing it under that rule required a 2/3 majority vote, hence the failure. 122 of those voting against were Democrats. Another bill, which would extend a program that helps re-educate laid off workers, was coming up for renewal yesterday under the same House rule. The leadership pulled that bill from the floor after realizing it too would fail to pass under the rules suspension. That's not auspicious work on the part of the leadership/whips.

Albert Pujols' extension - Cards fail to extend by deadline
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 9, 2011 -> 12:33 PM) Wow. I realize the Angels just took on Vernon Wells's contract, but give them a little credit. I don't think there is a player in baseball for whom you trade those 3 guys. That's the problem though for the Cardinals...why would you willingly trade the best player in baseball for anything less than that? It's almost impossible to get "fair value" for a full season of Albert Pujols and the likely chance to be the team that extends him.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 09:50 PM) Well, you should be all for it. And you should be totally against it. Or wait, shouldn't you be for it? I forget, which one is the unconstitutional freedom grab and which one isn't?

The environment thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 10:19 PM) Shows production of petro products to be in the lower rate half, paying effectively 11%. And its not an industry that needs early growth protections like the high tech, not-yet-mature fields around it. The part that is taxed at the higher end is the integrated petroleum field...which is refining, not extraction. Integrated Petroleum processing is unlikely to qualify for a lot of credits anyway, because much of the equipment they're using has been built up over decades, and since global oil production hasn't really increased in 5 years, there's no reason to invest in additional refining capacity, just maintenance. And as our friend at BP have shown, maintenance at refineries isn't a high priority anyway.

QUOTE (ChrisLikesBaseball @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 06:54 PM) Nationals sign Alex Cintron to a minor league deal, proving that even though they threw money at Jayson Werth, they are still the Nationals. Jon Heyman twitter Do they have a SS prospect at AAA that he's somehow blocking? He's a career .300+ hitter at AAA and he can possibly help their AAA team win a few games if they don't have a SS. What's wrong with that?

QUOTE (since56 @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 06:49 PM) No one knows if his velocity will be the same. No one knows just how long it will take him to return to major league form. I just hope he doesn't try to rush it and has a set back. Similarly...no one knows that extra rest will make a difference either

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 06:43 PM) -0.9 UZR in his career in the outfield There are plenty of worse outfielders. As a backup outfielder, he's perfectly acceptable. He had 1 good season there judged by UZR, 2007 when he played RF 130+ games and was supposedly above average. Since then, he's played there 132 games, and put up a -12 UZR.

This press release cleared with a Science article last week but I missed it...we're up to 2 "100 year" droughts in the Amazon in the last 5 years. Droughts in the Amazon have severe lasting impacts on that ecosystem. The second one probably hit harder than the first because it was still recovering from the first.

2010-2011 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 03:23 PM) I wish the Bulls had something that makes sense for Melo, but unless Denver wants Deng + Taj and as many picks as we can legally send, it appears that the Bulls just cant get a deal done. Noah isnt going to be moved, so itll be interesting to see how this goes. From the last week Im starting to feel that Nuggets are going to trade Melo before the deadline, they just are trying to figure out which city that Melo will agree to will pay the most. Outside of the offer from the Nets, I really haven't been impressed by any of the supposed deals, esp. if I compare it to Deng + Taj + the Bobcats pick. The only downside for the Bulls is that Deng's deal lasts a long time.
