Financial News
By the way, this data is a bit out of date but it's worth highlighting in this discussion...here's the ranking of average state tax rates as of 2008 (mid-collapse). Illinois was #30 out of 50 states in total tax rate. In that ranking, Indiana was 28th.

Official 2010-11 NFL Thread
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jan 12, 2011 -> 11:01 AM) I still like a tall, fast WR....not sure if he was hurt or they just don't like him anymore. He had a couple catches the first couple games then never saw him again. Martz supposedly has been really unhappy with him the whole season.

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords shot in head
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 09:59 PM) Even still, he was 22 years old. The most that could happen is he gets taken for evaluation for 24 hours, 72 at most, and unless he is some imminent danger he'd be released. A lot of psychological issues can be treated with medication or therapy but it costs $$ usually for years or the person's entire life so even if they'd identified that when he was a kid, and he was in some kind of program, he'd be dropped back into society as soon as the money runs out since we have no national healthcare system. (last part of that not meant to be a political statement, just a statement of fact) Not just as an indictment of the health care system...this post is an accurate indictment of the mental health system in this country. It's basically "go be homeless" for most of them. Arizona, for example, cut expenditures on mental health by 1/3 last year alone.

Frank Hall of Fame chances
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 12, 2011 -> 09:36 AM) I don't see Glavine as a first timer, especially being on at the same time as Maddux. I think when people look at the two of them in the same group, they will see Greg as a big step above Tommy, and leave him off for the most part. Either way, I don't see that stopping Frank. Since they spent so long on the same staff, I think a lot of people would vote for the pair together.

Congrats Sox Management
QUOTE (3E8 @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 07:01 PM) Right. And moving to the AL and becoming a DH, he'll get the automatic negative positional adjustment which will not allow him the chance to benefit from a very questionable UZR. Dunn's bat has been worth 4 wins exactly once. Two out of the past four years, his bat has not been worth three wins. How often does fangraphs adjust their positional adjustments? I ask because I wonder if they're not still calibrated to the steroids era DH. Last year, the average AL DH had a .757 OPS (and the NL was obviously lower). Last year, the average NL 1b had an .812 OPS. The AL's was lower (no Pujols), but still 30 points higher than the average AL DH.

Congrats Sox Management
QUOTE (3E8 @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 06:37 PM) They did, but that was with Konerko and Dunn both posting the highest WAR either of them have in the past five years. My conservative estimate for them is 2.5 for PK and 3 for Dunn (looking at the most recent seasons, this is perfectly reasonable). Even being optimistic for both, say 3.5 wins apiece, in your 14 WAR prediction you'd have to get 7 wins from AJ/Morel/Crain/Ohman. That's a bit unrealistic. Let's just be clear about 1 thing...the reason why Dunn's WAR was the highest last year out of his career was that for once, UZR didn't hate his defense. Normally his defense counts for -1.5 to -3 wins. His bat has been worth 4-ish wins most every year.
