Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords shot in head
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 01:38 PM) I understand that. And I wasn't trying to insinuate that his parents are to blame in any way for what their son did. I was making a general statement that, instead of always trying to throw money at the symptoms or the peripheries of the problem, we need to look more at the root of it. If it is true that this shooter has genuine psychological issues...and is perhaps a legitimate psychotic...I doubt that there are very many parents anywhere who would understand how to recognize the development of those problems as the shooter was growing up, and even fewer who would be able to provide the necessary treatment on their own. These sort of legitimate mental breakdown issues are the sort that it's hard for everyday people to recognize, even harder for people who are close to them every day.

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords shot in head
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 01:30 PM) I'm not even going to engage you in this. I'll grant its entirely plausible that you're right...I just don't have the information at present that would allow me to make the step that you made. Out of the truly violent, sociopathic killers that we have in recent history...some have come from bad homes, some have been from fine circumstances. The Columbine killers, for example...they were from seemingly normal homes.

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords shot in head
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 01:26 PM) The fact that their son killed several people at a grocery store for no reason other than that he did not agree with their political beliefs. So what exactly did the parents do wrong then?

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 01:18 PM) Might be extreme yes, but politicians ARE claiming that they'll introduce legislation to ban speech about political figures as a result of this. Balta just posted a story about the guns. I'm confident there will be more introduced over the coming days. You are correct, there is a proposed bill that would ban using violent symbols when referring to members of Congress. I would oppose said bill. However, I would say that this event makes a strong case for expanded gun control and expanded mental health services.

Sale-ing Away with me...
QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 01:09 PM) I almost wanted to adjust the title to "Come Sale Away With Me." Not only is this song in my head constantly now thanks to this thread, but I'm going to make sure to take it out on the rest of you by using that song in game threads & such for the next 6 season

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords shot in head
If anyone's interested, here's pretty much the first article I've seen discussing the actual mindstate of the shooter's parents and sort of detailing his home environment. I'm not going to excerpt it just in case you don't want to read it, it's kind of tabloidy (safe for work though).

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 01:08 PM) Movies should be banned because John Hinckley attempted to assassinate Reagan based on his belief that Jodie Foster told him to do it. It's movies and movie stars that can cause something like assassinations to happen. Without them, the likelihood of these types of events would be lowered. That's the logic we're using now? You're taking a step farther than BS did though...I don't think anyone here has called for any sort of banning of certain types of speech. I think what they have called for is more intelligent behavior on the part of the political leadership, especially regarding violence and guns, and a more appropriate reaction from the rest of the country in the event that someone obviously crosses a line.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 12:48 PM) "Restrict freedoms just because in a hypothetical it would" isn't a good idea either. We already ban, at a nationwide level, bringing firearms within a certain distance of schools and other government facilities. There's no argument in your post here for why it's a good idea to allow legal carrying of weapons in range of obvious political targets other than the "restricting freedoms" point. Frankly, I have zero issue with that restriction on freedoms.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 12:42 PM) That wouldn't exactly do anything to prevent the situation that just happened. It's already illegal to shoot someone. "Not being able to prevent that particular crime" does not make it a bad idea.

Financial News
QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 10:24 AM) Let me be clear. I never once said that anyone was overpaid I think they are getting a fair wage. The issue I am having is that they can retire, mostly as teachers, at 55 if not younger and be making 100% of what they were making at 50. My point was also to point out that the salary structure in CPS is nothing to cry poor about and the schools are abysmal unless they are charter or magnet schools. If teachers continue on with their education and become an adminsistrator $100K to $150K is easily attainable. It is not the salaries of the public sector that is the problem it is the benefits. A teacher can pay less than $100/month for top flight health insurance or be given the cost if they elect not to take the coverage, approximately $12,000 a year. Both of my parents benefit from this it is great for them but it is causing the government to go broke. Have you ever heard of a teacher quitting the profession and moving on to something other than teaching? You're splitting hairs here, and they're very tiny hairs too. You think they're getting a fair wage...but they're getting too much in benefits. You're saying "Teachers are overpaid but they're overpaid on their benefits".

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 09:42 AM) That's the first bill they want to enact after this tragedy? Not something about letting mentally ill people buy guns and ammo? Hmm. That bill probably will never happen. Arizona is neither the best nor the worst state at participating in national databases regarding mentally ill and weapons purchases. There will be an effort at the national level to re-instate the ban on high-capacity handgun magazines, which plainly would have saved lives in this shooting and which expired when the 2004 Assault Weapons ban expired. However, with the Republicans in charge of the house, its chances are at best dubious.

Here's probably the first of several bills that will come out in response to this attack. Wonder what the details on that one will be.

Financial News
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 09:34 AM) At least in California and I have a few friends that took this path, but Firefighters make an incredibly good living. It is why it is one of the more difficult careers to get into in the area. The salaries are good, hours are good, and benefits are amazing. A firefighter will never be rich, but they won't be poor either. However, they do some great things for society as do police officers. Where I am, officers get paid very well as well. Again, not rich, but not poor, but not as much as firefighters. I'm only speaking of how stuff works in the county I live in as well as LA as I have a couple firefighter friends and a couple cop friends. You're sorta dancing around the issue so I'll ask it more specifically...Do you think they're overpaid?
