  1. QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 04:02 PM) dasox24, I am hearing Michigan vs Tennessee in the Gator Bowl. What are you hearing? Most everything I've heard about UT has suggested they're on their way to Nashville for the Music City Bowl.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 03:58 PM) I'm sure that already figured into their proposal. He still would be under contract for 7 years and $126 million. Its stupid for him to turn it down. If he plays 1 more year and stays healthy, he'd likely be in line for a Tex level contract. In other words, playing 1 more healthy season would be worth $54 million total, based on the numbers we're guesstimating here. That's why it's not stupid for him to turn it downl.
  3. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 03:48 PM) 9-3 1 more win all but guarantees a postseason spot.
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 03:26 PM) Its shocking this didn't get done, but if Boston can't get it done, really who can? If Boston is willing to 6 at about $20 million per season, it seems silly to me a guy coming off shoulder surgery would rather roll the dice. 6 years at $20 million = a 7 year, $126 contract. Mark Teixeira's contract was 8 years, $180 million. And that was signed 2 years ago. There's a reason why 8 years is Gonzalez's number, because Tex is the comparable.
  5. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 03:10 PM) Indeed. Is their something preventing them from re-attempting this deal with another extension window though? I'm not well versed on such a matter. It sounds like the issue was length. Adrian wants 8, Boston wanted to do 6. They have to receive permission from the commissioner's office to have an extension negotiation window, and as far as I know, the rules on that aren't published anywhere. The Commish's office might well be able to say no. But...if Gonzalez wants 8, then there's no amount of negotiating that the Padres and Red Sox can do with each other that can change that. If the Red Sox lowered their offer to the Padres, thinking that an 8 year commitment was more than they wanted to do, then the Padres shouldn't accept the deal. So, until the Red Sox are either willing to go to 8 or they're willing to take Gonzalez as a 1 and gone guy, there's no reason to re-do the deal. Gonzalez holds all of the leverage there.
  6. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 03:06 PM) Boston isn't necessarily out of it. It's far from over. I bet they keep working on it through the winter meetings this week. It's not about the players though, it's about the contract extension. They can't exactly negotiate with Gonzalez now since he's a Padre.
  7. QUOTE (beck72 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 03:01 PM) If Konerko does re-sign, then Viciedo should be traded. Morel seems like a good short term answer at 3b--Omar and Teahen if Morel gets hurt/ starts poorly[good glove, decent RH bat, not much power but don't need it with Dunn, Pk et al] Dayan is the 4th option at 3b. He's got value that would be wasted in AAA or the bench after he showed decent AB's in the bigs in Sept. The next thing would be to re-sign Putz. Let's be honest though, Dayan Viciedo could benefit a lot from 1 more full season in AAA, especially if he's getting at bats every day and playing a position in the field every day. The problem comes if you have to sign Konerko and Dunn for 3-4 years each; Dayan Viciedo does not need to sit in AAA for 3 years waiting on them. I'd say Morel's more of a long term answer at 3b than a short term answer. He may well struggle at it next year, but he really does belong there.
  8. QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 02:58 PM) werent the cubs supposably in on agone? does this mean they have a chance of getting him now? It wouldn't be hard at all for the Cubs to beat that package if they gave up Castro or Soto, but they might not get the "I used to work for Boston" discount.
  9. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 01:30 AM) i'm just saying that any drop in performance or accumulation of injuries COULD be an indication of a permanent downslide. Judging by the most recent evidence, I trust Konerko over Lee. You're right to say so. However...you're also wrong if you say that Konerko doesn't have a history of injuries in recent years. His thumb bothered him for more than a season and he struggled for a long time from that, and he's been dealing with a hip issue for years.
  10. QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 01:58 PM) MLBTR reporting this deal may fall apart yet due to the short extension window. Agon´s camp wants the extension done now and the BosSox want to wait, Stay tuned. WTF Boston? If you're going to trade for the guy and ask for the extension window, why wouldn't you get the extension done? Crazy.
  11. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 02:47 PM) I'd prefer a 3B without stone hands, and more range than a parked car. Morel ought to be option 1 at 3b, Vizquel platooning with someone ought to be option 2. Teahen or Lillibridge ought to be the panic option. Viciedo just doesn't belong there. Maybe, if you played him there the whole year at AAA, he'd get better. He has the arm to handle the spot, but he needs to work on all the rest, and moving back and forth between positions won't help. He ought to be a starting 1b somewhere, either Charlotte, Chicago, or someone else's big league team, for the full year next year.

  13. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 12:19 PM) Jobs number better than it seems? http://curiouscapitalist.blogs.time.com/20...ss-350000-jobs/ Read more: http://curiouscapitalist.blogs.time.com/20.../#ixzz17G6j4N58 Really, a "Seasonal adjustments are bad" argument? What a negative retail jobs number in November is telling you is that even if there are 350,000 jobs added by retail, in an average year out of the last 10 years, 450,000 jobs are added. So yeah, seasonal hiring happens, but it doesn't somehow mean that the employment report is hiding a solid report. What usually happens in down years is that you get a weak November report because you don't get the normal number of seasonal hiring, then you get a better number in January, because you have fewer layoffs than in an average year (since fewer people were hired in the first place)
  14. QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 10:34 PM) Can someone explain to me how DR only averages 5 FT a game? The dude plays in the lane the whole game and gets hammered regularly. WTF? First of all, the refs won't call things for him...yet. Secondly, he's so strong, he takes blows that would knock Wade and Kobe to the ground, and he fights through them to the hoop.
  15. QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 10:26 PM) Rose gets fouled by Scola on a drive, no call. Scola gets bumped by Boozer, foul. Bulls***. Sometimes you've got to deal with this and still win.
  16. QUOTE (VAfan @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 09:52 PM) Why not two years and an option that vests at 500 PAs in 2012 for PK? PK was making noise even at the end of last year about "retiring." I don't think he wants to hang on if he's hurting or not productive. But I do think he'd love to make another run at a championship, and with the Sox. Because it sounds like Baltimore has already offered him the guaranteed 3rd year.
  17. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 08:40 PM) That lineup is like a BLT without the Bacon Presumably, Beckham went in the Upton deal.
  18. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 07:42 PM) But no person with a lick of sense would get excited at having them punished to the point of having to shut their doors either. We get the exact same thing every time someone gets life in prison or the death penalty though. The criminal in that case ruins a lot of peoples lives, and we allow for society, and in particular the people who were harmed, to find satisfaction in their punishment. Hell, if Usama Bin Laden was killed tomorrow, I'd expect nationwide celebrations, and I'd expect everyone here to participate. The fact that they're incorporated shouldn't automatically mean that we shouldn't want them punished if they destroy the lives of thousands of people, and we should be fully justified in taking satisfaction in their punishment. And if they're not punished, then we have every right to be outraged (just like we have every right to be outraged with all the people on Wall Street who got rewarded for destroying the global economy, and just like we should celebrate if any of them ever get charged with anything).
  19. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 07:47 PM) I thought the expiration of these tax cuts didn't hurt anyone but the rich (who can obviously afford it!!!!!)? Damn, get your talking points straight. The expiration of $200 billion (annually) of tax cuts, mainly directed at upper incomes, does about as much damage as the expiration of $40 billion (annual) of unemployment benefits, if the multiplier for upper income tax cuts is about 0.4 and the multiplier for unemployment benefits is about 2.0.

Christmas lights on the porch, last present wrapped, still only 24 Hrs from having given blood, irish cream + iced cream + whipped cream, bottle of Jim, 9 meals given to the food pantry, IU basketball game on TV, SEC championship game on, one LPSC abstract already done, next paper nearly done, "Simpsons roasting on an open fire" and "A Garfield Christmas" watched, seems like a good night.
  21. There's nothing succinct enough to excerpt, but this is an exceptional story of how a 73 year old NY woman did nothing wrong, and yet the only thing that prevented BofA from taking her house illegally was the fact that she not only hired a lawyer, but she hired a lawyer smart enough to go to the NY Times.
  22. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 05:43 PM) I dread the day the people who want no accountability and no oversight over corporations take back over the government. They let it go?
  23. QUOTE (hitlesswonder @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 05:37 PM) OK, I deleted my post because I decided it was overly political. But I will say that BP is "the people" as well. The courts can settle the disputes between BP and plaintiffs. The executive branch of the government should not decide a priori that it needs to aid plaintiffs against BP. That's just anti-corporate bias in my opinion. When that happened, with the Exxon/Valdez, it took 20 years for a settlement to be reached and it wound up being only a couple thousand dollars per claim, after having started at a factor of 5-10 higher.
  24. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 05:38 PM) Berkman got $8 mil from #cardinals. he'll play left field, hear theyre moving holliday to right field - Jon Heyman That's just awful defense.
