  1. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 07:43 PM) That's a fireable offense. Might have saved his career. Imagine him being in Oakland for 81 games instead of Coors Field? He might be no better than a platoon player.
  2. Well, here we go. Is it safe to say "first hit wins"?
  3. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 07:04 PM) saving your own money for something, tax free, drives the Democrats insane. Because then 95% of that money that was saved gets spent on new houses bank fees, the people turn 60-65 and discover they need a surgery that costs 100x more than they have to spend on it, and either they wind up suffering in poverty or they wind up with their hands out to the government. If you think I'm exaggerating here, I'm not and the evidence is quite clear; prior to Social Security and Medicare, the Elderly had by far the highest poverty rates in the country (>25% in the 60's to 13% in the early 90's). What drives us insane is people who want the government off their back except for all the things that benefit them. Everything else is clearly unimportant except my Medicare.
  4. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 06:36 PM) I hate this argument. Our entire front office thought this was a good trade. They weren't confident in Hudson, period. You have to understand that they didn't want to send an unproven kid out there every 5 days in a tight race. Jackson was awesome and more than any of US expected him to be, but the front office knew the whole time what they were getting. Our team is better next year...plus 8 mil. We have Edwin Freaking Jackson now; talk about yer all-time Peavy insurance. You know, I just checked the numbers for the first time because I was curious and your post made me think about it. Jackson was actually only "awesome" for 1 month. He had an amazing August. His Sept/October was actually below average. His ERA by month this year: 6.67 5.58 2.11 7.24 1.47 4.93 Jackson went 1-2 in September with a 4.93 ERA. He had a stellar month of August. That was more than I expected him to be, I'll grant, but that doesn't come anywhere near making me include the word "Freaking" in his name.
  5. Everyone laugh at Nick Swisher.
  6. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 05:50 PM) Knӧtt me. Let's go to their berry farm instead.
  7. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 05:40 PM) I agree but my argument was about trading prospects for "proven talent" and Swish looked like proven talent. Doesn't mean I'm not going to challenge that claim. Anyway...if you want the opinion on the whole argument...your point is that those deals are up and down and may have looked better at the time. The response you ought to get is...when you've gone 0 for your last 30 at the plate, everyone who looks at you is going to think you're in a slump. You might look back at the end of the season and have won a batting title, but that doesn't mean that the time where everything had gone wrong wasn't a slump. Right now, one can argue that every single one of KW's trades since the Quentin deal has made us worse right now than we ought to have been. That's a slump. Some of these guys could snap out of it. Peavy could win 25 games next year and look stellar. Jackson could win some playoff games and shut me up. But right now, every one of KW's recent deals looks bad.
  8. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 05:31 PM) IKEA + Saturday will not equal a pleasant experience this evening for me. Just drink heavily. Isn't that what an actual Swede would do?
  9. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 05:35 PM) in the sox system, not all of baseball...couldnt find the actual ratings but this backs up my statement Our system was an abject disaster at the time, that wasn't saying much. DLS was still just a guy who'd had 1 good year in A-ball.
  10. If your bats give you 2 straight 5 run leads in the playoffs against the opponent's starting pitching, you ought to win at least 1.
  11. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 05:00 PM) De Los Santos was rated numero uno by baseball prospectus at the time of the trade. Can you demonstrate that? He was the #1 prospect in all of baseball?
  12. Link
  13. And vlad doesn't.
  14. Vlad can really open this up here...
  15. Texas out fast again. I wonder if anyone in the bullpen is nervous.
  16. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 04:37 PM) Neither Swisher trades were on KW IMO the ball club desperately needed a guy who can get on base and swish was ranked 6th in the AL in OBP maybe he gave up a bit too much but they were all unproven players we gave up, and the best prospect we gave up at the time (dLS) isnt even expected to be more than a bullpen guy We were annoyed at giving up DLS, but there's no way that you could call a guy in single-A ball the best prospect we gave up at the time. Not when Gio was in that deal. If for no other reason than the fact that he was at a much higher level.
  17. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 01:16 PM) Health insurance does seem like a total ripoff. But I'm an idiot, so I probably don't know what I'm talking about but anyways.... 1) I have no idea what my health insurance even covers. There could be a clause in my coverage that, in lawyer speak, says I explicitly agree to never file a cliam. I don't understand any of the BS in that policy. 2) If I actually get seriously ill would they pay? I've worked with the insurance industry enough to know that they would do everything in their power to avoid payment. The only person I know that actually got really sick and had health insurance got screwed. They basically found a loop hole in her coverage and told her to f*** off. 3) From, let's say 22- 40 years of age, if you don't seriously sick you will have saved a s*** LOAD of loot if you had all that health insurance premium. You could save it away for when you get old and do need it. I could easily amass $200k. 4) Once you have your mass amount of money saved, you can get care wherever you want. You don't have to pay super high US health care costs if you don't want. More options, go to Germany or something for major stuff. The amazing thing is...items 1, 2, and 3 were the essence of the affordable care act.
  18. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 11:58 AM) it was interesting to see that 20% also consider themselves as Democrats or closely associate with the Democrats. Ah, I found the 2008 exit poll data I was looking for. Self-identified conservatives, voting results in 2008...78% McCain, 20% Obama. Exactly the same margin. Self-Identified liberals went 89% Obama.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 03:20 PM) Egads, where the hell do you find your avys? Freaky photos.org?
  20. QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 10:48 AM) I can see NYY going up in the series 2-0 and Texas tying it up 2-2. I'm quite surprised the Yankees went with Hughes today and are letting Pettitte take on Lee. I would have thought Pettitte was my best shot for a win and I'd have run him out there today and left Hughes to lose to Lee.
  21. QUOTE (SleepyWhiteSox @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 02:51 AM) Again, this is lame. Be gone from this thread with your insults!
  22. What a remarkable bullpen collapse.
  23. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 06:33 AM) That entire theory is flawed. If Aroldis Chapman proves he can't be anything more than a middle reliever, are you going to trade for him assuming he is a starting pitcher? Along the same lines, if Chris Sale proves he can't be anything more than a middle reliever, are you going to trade for him assuming he is a starting pitcher? Is Aroldis Chapman a better reliever than Chris Sale? Bah, the Chapman comparison doesn't work here because of contract issues. Chapman almost has to be a starter. He's getting paid $30 million over 5 years.
  24. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 02:44 AM) Am I dumb for thinking Damon would be a good addition to our team? Depends on the context. Compared to Mark Kotsay at DH? Obviously. He's a slighly above average bat right now if he stays healthy, decent number of walks. If we're talking about replacing Juan Pierre though, we start needing to think about the defense, and Pierre was significantly better in the field than Damon, and as such, Juan Pierre was worth 2.2 WAR last year, Damon 1.9.
  25. QUOTE (sircaffey @ Oct 15, 2010 -> 10:23 PM) I think that would be a grave mistake given college IP are much different than pro IP, his unorthodox motion, and him being under-developed physically. Not to mention, him being the Sox' only legitimate SP prospect. There's no good reason to have him pitch near 170 innings. The Sox should do exactly what the Nats planned on doing with Strasburg before he got injured. Strasburg never pitched more than 109 innings in college, but he was put in the AFL last year in the Fall last year to push him up to about 128. (the Sox do not have Sale in the AFL). But, he was on pace to go for around 155 innings this year if he hadn't gotten hurt. He was exactly on Verducci Effect pace. Sale's pitched more innings each of the last 2 years than Stras ever did.
