White Sox targeting Carl Crawford
QUOTE (WHITESOXRANDY @ Oct 11, 2010 -> 04:35 PM) I'd rather the Sox re-sign Konerko and then see if they can dump off Peavy to the Brewers for Fielder. Why would the Brewers want Peavy's contract? They could bump that up a little bit and sign Fielder for it.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Oct 11, 2010 -> 02:27 PM) I think hotspots and triple junctions and Nazca and Cocos Plates. . . it's all Greek to me but I'm looking forward to taking it all in. Just don't start with the DNA trees. Those make my eyes gloss over.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 11, 2010 -> 02:40 PM) You just agreed with me. Here's the original post that got me started. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 8, 2010 -> 08:37 AM) Stocks are not overvalued - stocks are priced as they are only partially because of expectations of general recovery. The other big thing looming that the markets know, is that as the economy does grow a bit more, interest rates and inflation HAVE to rise. There is no way around it, with the amount of money having been shoved out there. And that means, even in a neutral economy, money will flow into the equity markets, and stocks will rise. They know that's coming, but no one knows for sure when. The point I get from this is that the writer is arguing that "a bit" of growth will likely produce substantial inflation and increases in interest rates because of the volume of money that has been put out by the Fed. My disagreement is that I think it needs substantial growth before that becomes even a remote concern, not just a bit. On top of that...at current growth rates...the level of substantial growth it would take to trigger legitimate inflation will not be reached for half a decade or more, and we're about to go for contractionary fiscal policy after November. So yeah, if we're agreeing now, I still disagree with the sentiment in your original post. If I misinterpreted it tell me so. I think that interest rate increases are a decade away unless we actually get a >$500 billion-ish stimulus package through, and that ain't happening.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 11, 2010 -> 02:31 PM) If interest rates stay this low and inflation doesn't kick in at some point, then there is no recovery. Well yeah...which is why you don't worry about the volume of money kicked out until the recovery has taken hold and unemployment has significantly gone down (to the point that the stuff written about by today's Nobel Prize winner, job-lock and structural unemployment, become important). Until you get to the point that you run into the structural damage done by leaving people unemployed for >2 years, inflation shouldn't be a concern at all. And if it does become a concern...the amount of steps the fed has taken to fight deflation give it enormous amounts of room to fight inflation.

BTW, for those who long since gave up on the show I'd probably still pass, but the Simpsons last night was quite good, baseball-centered, and probably worth a viewing.

A couple of insights on the Twins
QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 11, 2010 -> 11:13 AM) Kubel for Quentin? I can't imagine these 2 teams sitting down and trying to deal with each other, but that's the setup of a deal that could work for both.

White Sox targeting Carl Crawford
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 11, 2010 -> 12:37 PM) Hey Balta, I know you don't like to be wrong, but is 27 closer to 50 or 1? And where did you even get 27%? Wouldn't it be 33%, if you say they're 10th in the league? 27% would be about where they are if they wound up 8th out of 30 teams. It's also worth noting that if we're being rigorous about the fact that the Sox had money coming in from the Dodgers and Royals, the teams behind them didn't stay fixed during the season. Both teams behind the Sox subtracted from their early season payroll during the year, while the Sox added to it by trading for Jackson. The Angels shed some salary down the stretch (i.e. Fuentes), the Mariners shed a boatload of salary mid-season by dealing Lee. And it's also entirely possible that the teams behind the Sox had people chipping in for their players as well in ways that we don't know about.

One of the President's nominees to the Federal Reserve Board of directors, who, unsurprisingly has been held up in the Senate for many months due to doubts about his qualifications, just won the "Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences". QUOTE (hitlesswonder @ Oct 11, 2010 -> 01:40 AM) Oh, and the Bull win 45 games, Bucks take the Central. Neither Rose nor Noah are all-stars this season (though both are good players). Who is going to be a better point guard in the East? Isn't it literally Rondo V. Rose until Wall steps in?- White Sox targeting Carl Crawford
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 11, 2010 -> 01:05 AM) Which, as I said, puts us closer to the middle of the pack than the top of the league. What kind of metric takes someone in the upper 27% and says "that's closer to 50% than to 1%"?- Financial News

QUOTE (Benchwarmerjim @ Oct 10, 2010 -> 11:30 PM) Souhan has been trying to trade Delmon all season I would try to package Kubel (I think he has a team option for 2011) and a pitcher for a strikeout pitcher. Liriano is all they have for starter who can go out and strike out 10 on a regular basis the Twins also need a power RH bat. Your team makes a specific point though of not wanting guys like Liriano at the back end of your rotation. Your staff trains guys to throw strikes and pitch to contact, up and down the organization. And frankly, it works. I really like how their offense is set up with Mauer, Young, Morneau, Cuddyer, and Kubel. That's 5 guys in a row who can beat you, and it's balanced, esp. since Mauer hits both sides well. The Twins problems aren't in the building of their team.- Twins Collapse with Home Field Adv.
QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Oct 11, 2010 -> 05:02 AM) I fear the NFL owners will think they way the MLB is setup that it's a great idea. WTF? Really, you think that the reason baseball has no cap is the owners? And not the fact that it has the most powerful union in Sports?- Financial News

QUOTE (hitlesswonder @ Oct 10, 2010 -> 09:23 PM) Danks is about to start making big money, Floyd ended the season hurt, Sale's mechanics apparently scream injury-waiting-to-happen to a lot of baseball people, and Alexei is only under contract through 2012 and can't get on-base. All those guys have value, but it's not like the Sox have someone like Starlin Castro they could trade. The Sox might be able to get a rental like Fielder for one of those guys plus some other weaker stuff, but someone like Matt Kemp....I don't know. Alexei has arbitration years remaining after his contract ends.- Quietly so no one sees . . .
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Oct 10, 2010 -> 09:22 PM) Vomit sucks. My two threw up yesterday at 3 am and today at 3 am, respectively. So I expect to wake up at 3 am tonight. Or worse, it'll hit me in a week when I'm in Canada. Good thing is we have 3 zofran pills left from when the wifey had the littlest one. That crap cures the vomits immediately. We should stop feeding that meat to Kap. I think our work is done.- NLDS: Giants vs. Braves
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 10, 2010 -> 07:41 PM) I was talking overall. Not specifically that particular draft. The Braves have a bevy of premium arms. We've got Sale and? I don't even want to get into it. And yet...the Braves have exactly legit 1 starting pitcher that they've developed, right? Hanson? Lowe, Hudson, Jurrjens all signed or traded for. Maybe you'd count Medlen but he shredded his elbow. Their bullpen spent about 5 years being the weakest point on their team, to the point they had to sign Wagner to close. Kyle Farnsworth plays a role in their bullpen. You simply aren't going to get me to envy the pitching staff of any team using Kyle Farnsworth for anything.- NLDS: Giants vs. Braves
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 10, 2010 -> 07:34 PM) This Craig Kimbrel is sick. Can we please hire the Braves' scouts? I hate our organization more and more each day. He was drafted by the Braves in the 3rd round of the 2008 draft. Which guy would you prefer we have not selected in favor of Kimbrel...Gordon Beckham or Brent Morel? Those are the only 2 picks the Sox had before he was drafted.- The environment thread

QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 10, 2010 -> 07:12 PM) The "Peace Dividend" was a Reagan era promise. Basically after we "won" the cold war we could reduce our military expenses. And under secretary of defense Cheney, and the first few years of the Clinton administration, we did. - The Democrat Thread
