Who's the odd man out of the rotation next year?
QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 05:35 PM) Only a team like the Royals or Astros would offer Freddy a lot of money for his wins. Everybody else will give him what he truly deserves...5th starter's money. 5th starter money for a guy who can throw a good number of innings is still $5-$10 million.

Jenks will Close again
QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 05:14 PM) I would agree with that if he had consistent control of it, which he doesn't. He and the catchers can't live in a perfect world where he has it like he had when he was going good, his FB is his best pitch right now and I think they need to stick with it a majority of the time, if the curve comes to him, great, work it in. He really doesn't need "consistent control" of the curve, he got tons of people out swinging on them when they bounced 2 feet in front of home plate. What he needs is people to be unable to sit back and wait for it. I wonder if he isn't tipping that a bit.

Jenks will Close again
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 05:13 PM) He's a closer for crying out loud. All you need is 2 pitches. (See: Mariano Rivera) Rivera has 2 pitches?

Jenks will Close again
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 05:13 PM) It seems to me like his cutter and slider (I have a hard time even telling if they are two different pitches sometimes, but I feel they are) are what get him in trouble. Just throw the straight gas by people, and use the curveball to keep them off balance. It's not brain surgery for Bobby when he's pitching well. I agree that the Cutter/Slider can give him trouble, I think it was the curve that gave him trouble today though. THe HBP and the HR were both on Curves, I think.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 05:10 PM) Now, when he gets ahead, instead of just blowing hitters away, he'll try to get them to chase offspeed pitches. It has happened way too often...and, as the old saying goes, "you shouldn't get beat on your 2nd/3rd/4th best pitch." Was I the only one who watched Bobby Jenks his first 3 years in the big leagues? He always, always, always used the curveball as his out pitch. He'd get ahead, get 2 strikes on the hitter, and everyone knew the hook was coming...no one could hit it though since they still had the fastball to protect against.

Jenks will Close again
QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 05:09 PM) he or AJ and Castro need to focus heavily on FBs, he is throwing hard and seemingly has good control over it, he gets in a ton of trouble with his offspeed stuff, either wild with it or hangs it, it would be more effective if he is pumping fastballs and throws the occasional offspeed Frankly, I totally disagree. That hook is his key pitch. If he's throwing fastball after fastball up there, guys gear up for it and hit it. He needs that destroyer curveball to put them away.

Jenks will Close again
QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 05:03 PM) I have no problem with Jenks closing. He's throwing the ball real well right now. He's hitting the upper 90's and has 3 pitches for a closer. He hung a ball to Raburn. Today is the 1st time he's thrown a bad pitch in awhile. It's not like he's going out there and topping out at 90 with a rolling curve to go with it. He didn't have a good curve today, they should've just stuck with the heat and it likely would have been over. He wound up letting the 2 baserunners on before Raburn, so it wasn't just 1 bad pitch.

O. Guillen loves him some Kotsay, so removal is out of the equation
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 05:05 PM) Ozzie is going to live and die with Mark Kotsay. I hope that he and Kenny have reached an understanding and that if the White Sox don't advance deep into the playoffs, then Ozzie's removal is an option. This team continues to win in spite of Ozzie make a massacre of baseball common sense, this isn't going to last forever. This scenario is the exact opposite of what happens. The only way Ozzie's job was going to be in jeopardy this year was if the team continued on their trend from the first 2 months.

Adam Dunn put on waivers...
QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 04:53 PM) No they cannot. I believe you can put him on irrevocable waivers the 2nd time though.

Jenks will Close again
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 04:48 PM) I still disagree, as his "body type" is definitely a factor in his effectiveness. There's a difference between talking about it intelligently and throwing out ad hominem insults about it. If you're talking about his effectiveness, go ahead. The one we care about is the one where people call him a fat (insert random profane word here). That's our main issue. Feel free and encouraged to complain about how his weight hurts his pitching ability.

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER
I guess i'll say it here too...even if we're angry with Bobby, let's try to avoid random ad hominem personal/body type insults tonight, ok?

Jenks will Close again
By the way folks, just anticipating how these nights usually go...we're all going to be angry at Jenks, but at least for tonight, let's try not to go after him with the personal/body type insults.

Jenks will Close again
QUOTE (VAfan @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 04:42 PM) So what is the solution? It's easy to rail against Bobby, but if you bump him, then you weaken the set up core considerably. Right now, Putz and Thornton make a formidable duo that can cover any parts of the 7th and 8th innings. If you move one of them to closer, then either Bobby has to take their place, or you have to elevate Santos. That may be fine and good, but Santos has no real experience, so it is hard to know how he'll do in a pennant race. You could mix Sale in here as well, and demote Bobby all the way down to almost Linebrink status for a while. I think we're going to need the good Bobby Jenks to win the division, and the pennant, so I wouldn't write him off completely. I'd work on getting his curveball back so he's not so predictable. You've got to go with Putz in the 9th and Santos taking Putz's role. Putz has the experience there, Santos is back to being effective, it's the only realistic setup. And Hell, if we need 1 more out, Linebrink's been non-awful his last 10 outings or so. The odds of that happening are very low though. Ozzie will keep putting Jenks out there.

Adam Dunn put on waivers...
QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 04:40 PM) Rizzo would immediately pull him back. He still has 2 days to try to work out a trade with the claiming team.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 04:40 PM) I just don't think I've ever seen you post one so quickly. A lot of times I'm not around a computer when a game thread gets posted, so I always assumed they were written up later. Last night's one popped up within 10 minutes of the end of the game. I wanted my reaction on Jackson to get up there quick.

Jenks will Close again
The sequence today will be: Ozzie will declare the closer's spot open again The Sox will either win big tomorrow or lose, Sale will get his first outing in relief, everyone will be excited about that. There will be no need for a closer. Sometime over the weekend, a closer will be needed. Both Thornton and Putz will be used in the 7th-8th, Jenks will come out again to close. Announcers and sportswriters will pretend that Ozzie never said anything about the Closer's spot today.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 04:35 PM) You write these during the game? Sometimes. For some strange reason I was sitting here in the 9th inning, thought about starting one after the Kotsay HR...and decided to wait. I'm not kidding. Lots of them get written the next morning if it's a late night game. I like to get them out early if I can. What's the point of blogging if you can't provide the fastest commentary on the game.

Game Thread: White Sox (61-46) @ Detroit (53-54) 12:05 CDT
QUOTE (danman31 @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 04:17 PM) I'd rather keep Putz in the 7th and 8th when their might be high leverage spots. After seeing how about-to-snap Sergio was in that game when he took over for Jenks with the bases loaded...I don't think his nerves are closer nerves just yet.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 04:16 PM) f*** it. I'll say what we're all thinking. Santos should be the closer the rest of the way. Santos? I'd say Putz.
