Prince Fielder Speculation
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 03:57 PM) Interesting. Given the cash considerations involved I don't think they're going to do that well...but you never know. Then there's little reason for them to deal him, esp. now. Just look what the Braves gave up for Tex when they originally got him. Salty, Feliz, and Andrus were in that deal.

Prince Fielder Speculation
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 03:23 PM) I think Danks would interest Milwaukee as well. However, I really don't expect a blockbuster trade thanks mostly to the Peavy injury. There's just no depth now (not like there was much to start). Don't forget that Ozzie is not the biggest fan of Torres. The only reason D1 wouldn't interest Milwaukee is that he's on a 2012 FA path, with expensive arbitration years coming up, while G is locked through 2013 if you count the team option.

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 02:49 PM) Who do you want to be our shortstop the next 10 years? I'd expect there's a good chance that our SS 9-10 years from now hasn't finished high school yet.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 03:33 PM) OK, I dug around a couple of the news stories, and I now see where I was confused. She made this speech in March of this year, referring back to the 1986 situation. Now I understand the timeline, which wasn't made clear in the stories I read previously. She made the statements as a public official, about her past. Not as bad as if she made them about a current incident in her position of power, but still bad in that she made them while in this position, and bad that she did things that way, even if she corrected herself. I guess a more complete investigation would have been the appropriate path, but I'd still say firing was the right move. So, is it then your opinion that holding prejudiced views at any point in your lifetime is a disqualification for government service? If the answer to that is no, then is it your opinion that talking about how you overcame those views is a disqualification for working for the government? Just trying to see what you define the firing offense to be here.

You know all the people who have used the phrase "Apollo project/Manhattan Project" for clean energy? China is working on a plan to dump $750 billion in funding into clean energy over the next decade.

Prince Fielder Speculation
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 03:18 PM) It would make no sense for Milwaukee to go after Beckham, as they have Weeks and Lawrie. The Brewers want pitching, pitching, and more pitching. And the only pitcher in our Org worth enough to be the centerpiece of a deal for Fielder is starting tonight.

Have the White Sox ever had a better defense?
QUOTE (Gregory Pratt @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 03:17 PM) Isn't Konerko second worst at first in UZR? Anyway, I absolutely love watching Vizquel play defense, and Alexei's not bad either. 3rd worst in the AL, ahead of only Miguel Cabrera and Ty Wiggington. Glaus and Cantu are also worse. Prince Fielder and Mark Teixeira have very similar numbers.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 03:08 PM) Does Sale have command of 3 pitches? What makes him good enough to be a solid #5? What evidence suggests this? We drafted him a month ago. Sale has the makeup to be a starter long term...but there is zero chance that they'd consider him as a starter this year. They've basically said that they have no interest in pushing him for a lot of innings since he threw a lot in college this year.

Texas Republicans: Missionary or Else
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 02:57 PM) People who don't live in Arizona seem way more sensitive about issues concerning their safety and border security than the people who live in the state actually are. Considering that Sherriff Arpaio's county has seen a dramatic surge in violent crime since he took over while every other area in Arizona has seen plummeting crime and the defenders of the bill keep having to invent completely false crime statistics to make their case, I'm not sure the people favoring that bill are that concerned with Arizona's safety either.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 03:00 PM) The statements are still bad, and if she had said them while working as a DOA official, I'd stand by my original thought.. The story above is a recent story, describing events and feelings from 1986. The "I've put them in his hands" part is describing how she felt at that point.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 02:53 PM) If you are going to get starting pitching prospects from someone, it's going to cost guys like Viciedo, Flowers, Morel, Danks2, and whoever else has value. Aside from Hudson, you just named all of them.

Since you said you don't have the video yet NSS, here's the text. The part in bold was the excerpt. The "Video cut" is supposedly a stop to change videotapes. Ms. Sherrod also gave an interview today to CNN saying that part of her original prejudice prior to learning her lesson in this case was likely due to her father being murdered by a white farmer that was never indicted, in an incident she believed to be racially motivated.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 02:21 PM) Was she employed by the DOA during that time? I thought yes. If so, then your point is irrelevant. No. Private group. She was appointed to the Dept. of Ag in 2009. The events in question were in about 1986, when she worked for the Georgia field office for the Federation of Southern Cooperative/Land Assistance Fund.

Chicago City Budget
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 02:20 PM) What's being argued here isn't the point. Its not that anyone disagrees that its better if people know about AIDS and how its transmitted. Its about whether or not these ads do anything whatsoever to help with that. If the ads cost, say, a million dollars... how much on average does the city pay in uncovered health care costs for each new AIDS case? And note I said how much does it cost the CITY, who are the ones paying for the ads. If the number is, say, $1000 (I have no idea what it is, just illustrating), then that means you'd better think that 3 months of a few billboards is going to net you 1,000 fewer cases or more. Otherwise, you are wasting money. Now, if hospitals and insurance companies are paying a ton of money for these cases, which I am sure they are, then THEY should be doing preventative work to protect themselves, on THEIR dime. Not taxpayer money. Link. A large chunk of that cost does wind up coming from state governments. However, that's also not including the costs a city may bear if they run any sort of community health clinics as well.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 01:39 PM) If they know AIDS is passed on by unprotected sex, what is left to know? The only other thing you can teach them is that the way to ensure they will never get AIDS is to not have sex at all, and since you can't teach that, what else is there? You could also teach that Condom use can be quite effective, for example.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 01:50 PM) It was racist then, its still racist now. It was stupid behavior for a publci official then, and now. It was fireable then, and still is now. I'm not sure if you realize this or not and it's right on the border of all your statements so I'm going to ask even though it's at best tangential...you do realize that she was not a public official during the events she was discussing, right? She was working for a group with the explicit mission of helping African Americans in that region, not the DOA.

Putz for Closer
QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 01:57 PM) Also, is it worth noting to the detractors that even with the blowup, Jenks' ERA since June 1st is 3.00 and his WHIP is 1.00, with nearly a 5.00 K/BB? I thought it was argued that one bad outing would destroy a guy's numbers?

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!

Putz for Closer
QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 01:30 PM) Wite, the problem with WHIP (and ERA) is that a closer can have one outing where he pitches 0.0, gives up 6 ER with 6 walks/hits, and then be totally effective for his next 13 outings, and still have a s***ty WHIP and a s***ty ERA. He has done his job 13/14 times, but his line looks totally s***ty. Ok, fine, I'll bite...if Mariano had an outing like that and it was swamping his numbers the WHIP wouldn't tell us much. Simple reply. Would you describe Bobby Jenks's WHIP and ERA numbers as inflated by "1 bad outing", "2 bad outings", or by "Consistently mediocre at best in April and May along with a terrible outing in July".

Either way, it's interesting that they can throw one out and not throw the other out if there's no hard and fast rule to follow.

Chicago City Budget
QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 12:27 PM) I disagree. If there is a general feeling that AIDS is something that happens "over there" or with others, educating them about how it's real and passed in your community would help. Furthermore, in the specific community we're talking about here, discussion of such things really is taboo.
