  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 10:57 AM) Which is exactly what would happen if BP was sold. Presumably, if BP is sold off, the current stockholders wind up getting some value of shares in the purchasing company, correct?
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 10:55 AM) If they quit paying claims voluntarily, instead going through court, that would be way #1. Hell, I think with the "investor class", that sort of move would actually improve the perception of that company. The little people have already been screwed and had their lives ruined either way. May as well see how many of them you can push onto the government doles.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 10:52 AM) If BP stays as BP, it is much less likely to happen than if another company buys them. The image of BP isn't as important to, say, Exxon, as it is to BP. Really though, how much more damage can be done to BP's brand? Unless they start firing kittens into the geyser instead of shredded tires. Their image will take decades to recover.
  4. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 10:50 AM) I don't understand the Thome love at all. This was a guy who would get injured being a DH. Did they win anything at all with him? No. The 2008 AL Central doesn't count?
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 10:50 AM) They could get out of the civil stuff through bankruptcy. Its it he criminal stuff that could kill them. Yeah, but like I asked...bankruptcy is exactly what, as a shareholder, I'm trying to avoid.
  6. QUOTE (scenario @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 10:47 AM) I'll go with logic over hearsay. Hearsay? I mean, I'm no fan of the Sun Times, but calling direct quotes printed by the Sun Times to be hearsay?
  7. QUOTE (scenario @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 10:42 AM) I don't think AJ will get traded until closer to the deadline. So what if he gets no trade rights? He'll waive them when the time comes to go to a contender. He's strongly suggested he won't. His words to describe what happens after june 13th, when asked earlier this season by the Sun Times, were "They can't trade me". I don't know how the original question was phrased so he may have left himself an out, but that's what we have to go on.
  8. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 10:40 AM) There's been rumors circulating of one of the other companies buying BP out because their stock has taken such a hit. I think that's part of what is holding up their stock price, and I don't think it'll happen because I don't think any other oil company wants to risk the kind of liability that is possible in this case. There are so many different avenues for liability, from the government revenue lost on the barrels, to the government fine for negligence per barrel, to paying for the cleanup crews, to paying economic losses for the entire region (seriously, if this keeps gushing for a few more months and winds up at the doorstep of Tampa or Miami or the Keys? How much is 5 Florida tourism seasons worth?)
  9. "Padding your post count"?
  10. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 10:34 AM) F***ing buzzkill. Yeah, that's on the swear filter too.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 10:29 AM) Well that and he thought he was getting a good SS and two hole hitter. Hell, he got an extra 2 draft pick out of that deal and a key cog in a division title season, plus a couple million in salary savings.
  12. Aramis Ramirez to the 15 day DL with a hurt left thumb. Doesn't believe he'll need surgery, just wants to give it a rest. He'll be eligible to come off on the 23rd, the Sox play them on the 25th-27th. Chad Tracy called up from AAA to take his roster spot.
  13. QUOTE (girlslikebaseballtoo#26 @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 10:27 AM) AHHH ...who knew you can't say p**** on Soxtalk?!?!?! lol The admins, of course
  14. QUOTE (girlslikebaseballtoo#26 @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 10:21 AM) Who knew you can't say "p****" on photobucket?!?!?!?! haha I'd guess it's actually our swear filter that is catching it, not photobucket's.
  15. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 10:17 AM) I'd lean towards them not going to bankruptcy. Their stock is still holding significant value as you see, so most of the street feels they will survive this without having to go that route. Now technically, holding common stock does not NECESSARILY mean its worthless in a bankruptcy. What it does mean is that you are at the very end of the claims line, so for practical purposes, there is a 99% chance your stock would become worthless. Understood. Anyway, between the ickiness of holding it and the fact that I think there's growing downside with each day of new claims, I think dumping it at this level seems like a reasonable move to me. If all i do is pull out the $600 it's worth right now, I've cashed in $40-$80 worth of dividends a year for the past decade, and the drop in the stock is nothing but a paper loss. Probably should have dumped when I saw the first reports of the spill, but hell, it'll take me some time to figure out how to do that anyway.
  16. This is kinda funny.
  17. QUOTE (soxfan-kwman @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 10:13 AM) Kenny is a gambler, if we win today & sweep the Cubs he'll stick with AJ until absolute latest. Besides, we play Pitsburgt & Washington after the Cubs. Pittsburgh has been unstoppable against Chicago teams this season. And we have to face Stras.
  18. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 10:10 AM) Bats passed their prime, no thank you. So, if KW was, hypothetically, able to move Peavy's contract by the end of 2011 and was able to bring up Hudson and another RHP starter, and thus had freed up say $20 million in salary, and he decided to blow it all at once on Prince Fielder, you'd be mad because Fielder is past his prime?
  19. Your last 2 links do not work due to the swear filter. Can I recommend Shadyurl.com? Don't just shorten your link, make them suspicious and frightening.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 10:04 AM) Its tough to say. I could see a bankruptcy scenario, then again, I would see a lot of interest in that not happening. I can see what you're saying in interest in it not happening, but frankly, the only way the debts from this don't kill the company is if the people wind up hung out to dry by the court system, and that'll take 20 years to wind its way through (see: Exxon). Plus, one poorly placed hurricane and things go to Hell 20 times faster.
  21. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 10:00 AM) The White Sox need bats. Cheap young pitching = more money to spend on bats.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 10:01 AM) If they do go into bankruptcy, the stock is canceled. So basically, I'm probably better off figuring out how to take the $600 loss rather than having it all worthless.
  23. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 09:58 AM) Blocked at work. I'll make myself sad again at home. So, what can someone do locally (ie not moving to LA/ AL)? Use less oil? Write your Senator and ask him or her to support a cap and trade plan? Find a gulf relief fund to give money to. Find a cleanup org that is hiring people to go out and cleanup oil. That's about all I can figure. You can't just boycott BP stations; if their stations sell less gasoline, then BP will just sell their gas to another company, and you just hurt the local dealers. There's no supplies you have that will help in the cleanup effort. There's nothing you can do to help plug the pipe. Basically, if you can't directly aid in the cleanup operation, there's little you can do directly other than helping the people affected.
