Official 2009-2010 NBA Thread

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 06:07 PM) I dont really know what could be done to change that. It would have to really be proven that a team is tanking and is not, in fact, really bad. And then what sort of penalty could you assess to a team? thats a tough one Like when the star player on a bad team comes down with a mysterious injury 2 months before the season ends and thus doesn't play the last month...yeah, what can you do. You can put a lottery in place, that's about it. -

QUOTE (ChWRoCk2 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 05:54 PM) I personally think the lottery is stupid, and yes I know the Bulls got Rose and this is somewhat sill for me to bring up. I've always felt the system is flawed and if a team has the worst record then they should get the first overall pick outright. Does anyone like seeing 10 teams start tanking for the last 2 months of the season to try to improve their draft pick? They do it enough with the lottery in existence. -
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 05:32 PM) Could you imagine the price the Sox would have to pay? It'd start with Beckham and Danks probably. 2010: $20 million 2011: $20 million 2012: $21 million 2013: $21 million 2014: $22 million 2015: $22 million I wouldn't give up anyone prospect-wise for that contract.

If this pitching staff is solid and not great, there is no change that can be made to this roster offensively that will win them the world series next year, and they may as well go with a youth movement on position players.

QUOTE (longshot7 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 05:17 PM) I'm not sure why juicers get such a bad rap considering the numbers they put up. Yeah, that Giambi contract had nothing at all to do with the fact that the Yankees lost in the 9th inning of the last game of the World Series the season before Giambi arrived and won it the first season after he was gone.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 05:13 PM) In 2009, it's used to stop things that should have a lot more debate to it then a simple majority getting shoved up our ass. Because this health care debate...that hasn't gone on NEARLY long enough!
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 05:11 PM) It is. Not all in one shot, but it is. So I guess I'm "reflect(ed) poorly". Quite frankly, yeah.
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 05:11 PM) Do you miss the point on purpose? I think so. I think you're missing the point...2006-2008 it was your guys doing the filibustering to prevent the President from having to use his veto pen.
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 05:08 PM) It will be, because they're wrong. The bill is written to lie on the numbers. You all want to believe this utopian "we can provide better health care, ensure all things are covered, add more people, while lowering costs" bulls***. It's impossible. If these numbers are true, our "health care system" will provide 25% of what it does today, and I'll take a higher cost for better health care, thank you. And for the billionth time, no one is saying don't fix what's broke, but a public take over is not the way out. And for the billionth time, stating that this is a public takeover continues to reflect poorly on anyone who says it.
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 05:02 PM) LMAO. You believe that s***? Either they're right or this country will be bankrupt in 10 years because its paying 25% of its GDP for health insurance.
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 04:53 PM) Like I said, of course it's ok from 2006-2008. Or whenever there's a Republican president. Who do you think was doing the Filibustering from 2006-2008?
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 04:26 PM) What more does he have to do? Sign with the Yankees.
-
QUOTE (longshot7 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 04:12 PM) .... it's still an average to below-average lineup, nothing more. And an average lineup with a great pitching staff is one way to win a world series, whether the Yankees load up on players or not. In fact, it may wind up being that is one way of building a winning team now that the Yankees have figured out that they shouldn't spend their money on juicers.
-
QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 03:46 PM) Crisp for Pods.....Rios for Dye........but then also Teahan for Getz .......and then what will in truth replace Thome? There's still a possibility to end up roughly the same power wise and maybe even better BA/OBP wise. As would be the case with Matsui for Thome. Frankly, I still think Thome replaces Thome. If you also go deeper than that, Teahen is replacing Getz, but also Beckham is replacing Beckham for 1/2 the season and Fields for 1/2 the season. Rios and Crisp would be replacing Dye and Pods and Anderson and our Dewayne Wise leadoff experiment. There were a fair number of at bats that guys got last year for development that they failed to do anything with.
-
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 03:35 PM) Simple majority to bring a bill to the floor. Problem solved. How does that solve the problem? Every trick, holds, filibusters, is still in play on the way out of the Senate.
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 03:34 PM) Not to mention the fact that Crisp's lack of arm strength makes him a poor fit for CF. He'd have to play left with Quentin moving to right. How does arm strength fit into that UZR stat? Rios I'd say has been slightly better in CF but it does sorta vary.
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 02:19 PM) Yea, and we're probably going to be looking at the same #'s for Obama. You just don't hear about crap unless it's controversial. What about Hamilton who just got nominated? Just another example. here is the actual data, which of course disagrees. The classic example of how IOKIYAR is 1993. Prior to that year, in general a judge would only be blocked if both of the Senators from the state in question agreed to do so. Then, suddenly, for some reason, in 1993 Orrin Hatch decided that it would only take 1 Senator from a state to block a judge. In 2001, the home state veto that had been easier to use during the clinton years totally vanished and couldn't be used at all.

QUOTE (YASNY @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 02:25 PM) I haven't read this thread, but I can't imagine why the discussion has gone 4 pages. Of course, Frank is a HOF'er. First Ballot! Because everyone is agreeing.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 01:53 PM) qwerty was right. I meant one ace (Peavy) and 3 good starters (perfect game, Floyd and D1). Misread and edited. My fault. Anyway...point still stands. If guys just do what they should...that's as good of a rotation as there is in baseball.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 01:46 PM) You think Garcia will be a good starter? He hasn't pitched a full season in quite some time. Garcia = 5, and he's well backed up by Hudson. Anyway...the top 4 is better than I see anyone in baseball having, on paper.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 01:43 PM) An average at best bullpen, one ace, and 3 good starters =/= great pitching staff. You and I disagree greatly about the definition of the number "3".
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 01:41 PM) Anything can happen in the playoffs especially when you have incredible starting pitching. That '05 offense wasn't very good. In 2008, Tampa Bay had the #9 offense in the AL, for another.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 01:39 PM) Well my point was that that's a lineup built to win a mediocre division and not a championship. So you're saying that a team with an average offense and a great pitching staff can't win a world series? Really? Didn't we just do that a few years ago?
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 01:37 PM) And lose 3 straight playoff games by a score of 1-0. Gimme a break. That's just silly. With that rotation, we'd have a shot at beating anyone.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 01:19 PM) Crisp is an OK solution, for cheap, and likely to spring back. However, I'd feel a lot better about it if we end up acquiring a big bat for DH/1B., or maybe two if we trade Konerko. If we don't, I'm not so sure. It may not be the best lineup ever...but if everyone puts up sort of their average numbers... Crisp Becksy Q Konerko Rios Thome Ramirez Teahen Pierzynski In some order...there's no obvious weak spot there unless Rios can't break his slump, you've got good speed at a number of spots, you've got power at 8 of the spots in the order, everyone there can drive in a run, you have to move some of the LH/RH bats around (I didn't really care there) but that's probably a good enough lineup that, if everyone stays healthy and this pitching staff does what it should...we'd win the Central.
