  1. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 07:48 PM) so when is NY gonna be underwater? Next time a hurricane hits it is probably best answer. It's overdue. Otherwise...within 150 years if we continue on the current path of carbon emissions. Possibly a lot less. The reality is...every public estimate winds up being conservative, because you don't write worst-case-scenarios in either scientific papers or in documents for politicking. Problem is...we keep surpassing the worst case scenario, because they're too conservative.
  2. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 07:47 PM) The Sox didn't take on $100M+ on Rios/Peavy contracts to watch another season thrown away by idiot defense and retarded baserunning. But what happens when the Sox start blowing games because of how thin their bullpen is?
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 07:41 PM) Or San Diego thinks it is too early to take an offer on Adrian Gonzalez, because they are waiting for bigger fish to come down the pipeline. In other words...the price is currently too high, because you'd have to beat a hypothetical deal that might not yet have been offered.
  4. Well, that's a good stopping point. What shall we talk about now?
  5. I don't think I've actually posted one of these threads myself, or at least I haven't done so recently, so it's my turn. Next week I'm going to be driving much of the length of I-40, basically from California to Knoxville, TN. I'll be heading through Albuquerque, Amarillo Texas, Little Rock AK, Nashville and Memphis TN, amongst all the other smaller cities. I'm looking for tips for good non-chain restaurants to stop at, random tourist traps, hotels that you've gotten for a good price or had a good experience with, anything that you'd count as "Can't miss", etc. Thanks for the help. And if it helps encourage posting...this thread can be done as the alphabet game as well.
  6. QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 07:26 PM) Would Michigan fire Rich Rodriguez after only 2 years? Fire? No. Be mad if he resigned and thus they didn't have to pay the remaining years on his contract?
  7. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 07:23 PM) This was probably never going to happen, it doesn't mean that talks are dead. If anything, that was proven with the Peavy trade. As a baseball fan in the offseason, all you can do is wait it out and see what happens. I still think the full takeaway from this report was: 1. KW knows he needs a bigger bat 2. KW is interested in Gonzalez 3. KW would be willing to pay a high price for Gonzalez, but 4. The price for Gonzalez is currently high enough that KW doesn't want to meet it unless he can free up some space somewhere else to make up for what he'd have to lose in terms of prospects.
  8. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 07:18 PM) If the BCS were somehow dissolved and a playoff system were somehow put into place, I have to wonder if some universities would try and get out of paying coaches their bonuses for reaching BCS bowl games and high BCS rankings. LOL If the team is reaching BCS bowls regularly, then the school won't want to risk losing their coach (i.e. USC, Florida). Teams that would want to get rid of struggling coaches (i.e. notre dame, Michigan, etc.) aren't paying BCS bowl bonuses anyway.
  9. QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 07:12 PM) A kid from my senior class is on ND's football team, he's a dumb as a box of rocks, so the tougher standards thing really doesn't fly too far. This should tell you something about the other schools that can't even graduate 2/3 of their classes.
  10. Satellite measurements show a surprising an unexpected amount of mass loss (read: melting) from the elephant in the room, the East Antarctic ice sheet. Everyone knows we're melting Greenland and West Antarctica rapidly and those are enough to inundate New York, but East Antarctica is not supposed to be melting yet. It's the giant one and it's supposed to be more insulated from the effects of warming. There's so much mass there that if this is the start of a long-term trend, this is really bad. But hey, emails!
  11. Ultimately, that's up to the servers to decide.
  12. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 06:09 PM) This must be after your great takeover, right? Seriously, just cut and paste out the medicare and medicaid and replace it with "government health care". And then chop off $700 billion, like the CBO says you should, over the next 20 years.
  13. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 06:06 PM) Gang of 14 = 2005. And there were others against GWB. It's not ever damn day that you see tax and kill (cap and trade) and bankrupt-care bills like this year has gone. And the Gang of 14 was over the filibuster of 7 out of George W. Bush's total of over 320 Judicial nominees.
  14. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 05:54 PM) It did. This procedural stuff has been around for a long time... the reason it seems like it wasn't is because there wasn't a government power grab for everything under the sun 4 years ago. And I'm talking about both parties, not the last 10 months. if you're pretending that nothing changed after the 2006 election, where the Filibuster immediately went from something that the minority would use at least somewhat sparingly, to a 60 vote standard for every single vote, then really, we've got nothing left to discuss. I can't say "don't you love how blue the sky is today" and then form a coherent response when you insist it is actually yellow.
  15. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 04:00 PM) And Kap is waaay more right than wrong. Both sides flip flop on what is right and wrong, the level of hypocrisy we accept from "our" side is too much, and the level we accept from the "other" side is too little. Kap's right about that but he's wrong about saying that the 60 vote requirement we have right now for everything existed even 4 years ago.
  16. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 04:33 PM) In a utopian, everything is great kind of way, it will. And that everything is great kind of way is the one where this concept of "Addition" and "Math" actually holds true. Edit:
  17. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 05:01 PM) quiet, it will just restart Stopping the thread will only be required when it grows so large it slows down the site.
  18. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 04:14 PM) I mentioned above how I excluded deals that aren't going to be traded because the teams themselves don't think they are bad. Rios falls under that umbrella. We wouldn't have claimed the contract if we felt it was a bad one. Rios is still somewhat cheap next year.
  19. Kinda brings to mind chapter and verse about he who is without sin.
  20. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 03:29 PM) Yeah, but its already done a ton of other damage. Of course I'm not going to disagree. I'm just pointing out a possible worst-case-scenario.
  21. Totally appropriate representation.
  22. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 03:22 PM) Not really, no. At some point, the Senate's profligate use of these stalling techniques is going to wind up having a situation where there's a real emergency in judicial vacancies, or some Senate-confirmed office (i.e. FEMA head) is going to wind up unfilled during an actual emergency.
