QUOTE (balfanman @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 01:37 PM) Again, I want to emphasize that I do not know, I'm just asking. Wouldn't the fact that he was originally drafted in 2005, but instead of going pro chose to have 3 years of college ball, be the equivalent of having a couple more seasons of minor league training. I would also think that since the Sox did send him to Arizona, where he is performing fairly well, means that they think that he's a little closer than 2 years away. Didn't he have a fairly significant wrist injury that probably greatly affected his numbers this past season? You are correct on all of these. However, that doesn't rid us of the biggest issue, the strikeouts. He was striking out on the same pace in A+ as in AA, so we can't blame that on the wrist I think 2k5 is right; it's plausible he could get a look in September of next year if he has a solid year at AA. But he needs to make a lot more contact of MLB pitching is going to eat him alive and he'll never hit over .250.

Any chance of a rainout either of these next 2 days?

QUOTE (Cali @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 10:39 AM) I'd say he has a chance with a strong ST. Especially with the Sox claiming they want to get more atheltic and more speed and defense. He fits the mold perfectly. He's not ready yet, I'm 100% convinced. You can tell from his stat line last year; not just the struggles in the 2nd half, but he had a glaring weakness the whole year; his strikeout total was way too high. His single-A average and slugging were great because he put up a .400+ BABIP. Now, I know all the caveats that go with that; he was likely hitting a lot of balls hard, but reality is, when you move upwards, the pitchers get better at finding ways to push that down. Even the best big league hitters are no where near that. When he got to AA, yes he was probably dealing with a lot of injuries, but his BABIP also dropped to more human levels, and suddenly he was in a gigantic slump. He simply needs to put the ball in play more. He struck out 102 times in 402 ab's this year. In a full season, those are Ryan Howard/Adam Dunn type numbers, and D2 the mighty Danks isn't going to hit 40 home runs for us.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 09:46 AM) That's like asking what if unemployment hits 25%. Its just incredibly unlikely, and none of the indicators are saying anything like that. Deflation is scary, but we aren't seeing any signs that its even a remote possibility. Actually...we were seeing signs it was a distinct possibility earlier this year. But that's where the stimulus package and the free money from the Fed have been so important.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 09:03 PM) You'd think, but I guess where that differs somewhat is kids freak out about sexual stuff and want to hide it from their parents, as opposed to life threatening illness. I hope that makes sense on what I'm trying to get across. Which is of course entirely why this is an issue....because some kids will genuinely have reason to freak out.

Tip of the day: don't catch flying bats with your bare hands.

Ginobili has to get rabies shots after catching a bat on the court with his bare hands. -

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 12:26 PM) It's funny how him and Ortiz got away with it. And the soon to be WS winning 3rd baseman.

QUOTE (Soxy @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 12:22 PM) I don't think I buy that as the reason we have such a high teen pregnancy (and probably teen abortion) rate relative to other comparable countries. True, but you've changed the question slightly I believe, from "how does the situation get to the point where a girl wouldn't tell her parents" to "why is the rate so high". The latter is a very different sociological issue.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 12:17 PM) Crime is different than medical procedures. Putting a 15 year old on the streets at 18 who killed someone is different than a 15 year old not getting an abortion because she was afraid to tell her parents. I think public safety becomes more important at some point. Kinda like yelling fire in a crowded theater. I'll note that you've taken "Charging them as an adult" and made the opposite option allowing them freely on the streets. That's something of a straw man since no one would be simply allowing them back onto the streets, but more importantly it's not germane to the discussion. The issue is why the law in 1 case says that you should treat a 15 year old like an adult and in another case you shouldn't.

QUOTE (Soxy @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 12:15 PM) The big question is, why are 15 year olds getting abortions? Because they don't know how to use birth control? Because no on told them the ramifications of sex? Because there is no parental figure to guide them at all? Honestly, I find these laws a whole hell of a lot less offensive than the 24 hour waiting period or the name publishing. My main concern is why would a young girl need an abortion? Where has she been failed that she reached this point (because if she can't make the decision to have one herself, then she also isn't fully responsible for getting into that position). In my mind that is the only interesting question. I think the answer to your question is that this country sets the standard really, really, really high before they take a family's kids away (probably correctly) and that's quite simply going to lead to some messy situations.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 12:11 PM) Would you favor putting teenage girls in front of a judge to decide them competency for an abortion? I'll note that you didn't answer my question. To answer yours...perhaps not a judge...but if there were some legal means by which a person could apply to get around this law based on specific familial issues, that'd satisfy me.
-
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 12:03 PM) it's to abide by the rest of the law. If you cant get bigger boobies before the age of 18 without the parents signing off, what gives them the ability to have an abortion? If you want to use the "its their body" argument, then it should apply to this as well. Saying "It's the law" doesn't answer his question about the purpose of teh law.

MLB: "Stop putting those needles in your arm" Manny: "Why can I only hit the ball 150 feet all of a sudden?"

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 11:06 AM) Like I said, I see it in a big picture sense as how you view the maturity level of a 17 year old. As a society we have deemed them incapable of deciding things for themselves. The only reason this is different is because it is abortion, and not something less controversial. So wait 1 second...probably a thread derailer here...but you're arguing we've deemed them incapable of making decisions for themselves, but don't we charge them with crimes as adults all the time? Isn't the U.S. one of only 2 countries (along with the ideal Democracy which is Somalia) that has not ratified the U.N. convention on rights of the child because our criminal justice system wants to be able to treat them as adults?

Jesus God no.

F***er shows up in this expression inside an exponential and there's nothing to normalize him with so it just takes everything to zero.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 06:25 AM) To be fair, with his ankle in that kind of shape, and as short as he is, it is hard to finish. This is why I was saying I was worried about the Bulls coming out of the gate. There was no way Rose was going to be 100% after only practicing for a week and having worn a walking boot for like 3 weeks. All things considered, winning against the Spurs, playing close against the Heat on the road, they've been better than I expected in these first few games. -
Damn. Either I've lost a factor of 10^23 or I've lost my mind.

Awww no, you go girl

Uh-huh, like I'm really supposed to believe you didn't see that coming.

Really hate learning that the price of a World Series is about $450 million to Tex, Burnett, and Captain Cheeseburger.

Eventually you gamble and either win or lose. I'd rather gamble on my ace.

Bad decision not pitching Lee in game 4.
