  1. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jul 24, 2009 -> 09:25 AM) I realize that Fields hit a slam yesterday, but the Sox need a better option at 3B before they even consider moving Beckham. Without knowing what the Sox think of him behind closed doors, I wouldn't complain if he got another chance, esp. if he played some winterball, worked on his swing, etc. We know Fields can legitimately hit MLB pitching, he's done so before. With Allen gone from our system, we're looking at having Getz, Beckham, Fields, Alexei, Konerko to cover the infield and DH positions next year prior to any trades or FA moves, with a hole in RF. It's plausible someone could be re-upped to fill 1 or 2 of those slots, but right now he has to be an option for next year, and hopefully the people in the back rooms feel like he's working better than Anderson did with the team and with the coaching staff.
  2. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jul 24, 2009 -> 09:43 AM) That catch will be on highlight reels for YEARS! Along with Endy Chavez and Willie Mays. And no, I'm not kidding. Dewayne Wise @ the ESPY awards next year?
  3. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 24, 2009 -> 09:41 AM) Is it all in the A's favor if the Cards manage to win a world series? Beane is good at what he does, but could you imagine being an A's fan and constantly seeing your team turned over and prospects brought in and re-issued around the league? Wouldnt it anger you to know that there is no true effort to win a World Series, only to remain somewhat competitive? If my team was a small market team, I wouldn't mind what he does at all. The only way you're going to stay competitive as a small market team is to have no compassion. If you're not in it at the AS break, then anyone on your team who you can deal to build for the next season needs to be dealt. If you can get 1 borderline all-star who you can hold for 5+ seasons, then you've had a hell of a deal. Combine that with what teams usually pull from the draft, and you can get yourself in to a legit cycle of rebuilding for a couple years and then making legit runs for a couple years. It's the only way to do it with a $60 million or below salary base.
  4. That seems like more than what Oakland gave up to get him in the first place.
  5. He will be in a small box in the corner. The Yankees have a 7 game winning streak going.
  6. For MLB it's a debacle. I turn to ESPNews if it's the 30 minutes past the hour mark and I know that the Sox Highlights will be leading off the half hour because of something spectacular happening. Otherwise, it's MLBTV. For other sports..I don't get the NBA network, so i can't comment. I have less of a problem with their NBA and NFL coverage. The NFL network people are good but it's not night and day like it is with MLB for that sport, and every network these days seems to have a decent group of NFL people.
  7. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 10:18 PM) By the way, they sent Carlos Torres to Great Falls for some reason. Sign that he's not going to be down for long and they wanted both him and Charlotte's rotation to stay on schedule?
  8. The Dodgers are near the top of the league in Blown Saves.
  9. There was talk the Tigers were interested. I'm happy he didn't go there.
  10. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Jul 24, 2009 -> 07:28 AM) I didn't see this posted yet. Interesting article on the perfecto's "unsung hero," our anti-Bartman. http://blogs.chicagotribune.com/news_colum...im-unsteve.html I didn't think you could reach that far from the OF seats with the gap there.
  11. Frankly, they're not poor and they're not crying poor. They don't spend stupid money and people get pissed off when they don't spend stupid money to bring in players like the dominant team on the northside does. It's worked wonders for them right? That LF they have is totally worth his contract. It's the "Wife getting mad her husband won't buy her a BMW" scenario.
  12. QUOTE (qwerty @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 07:46 PM) So at what point is it too late to bunt in a game to break up a no-hitter or a perfect game? How many runs behind would be classified as too many? Everth cabrera very recently bunted while down 8 runs with 2 outs in the 9th inning when sanchez threw hit no-hitter. This sort of this happens way more than people think. A simple fact is players pride is on the line. First off, no one wants to lose. Secondly, no one wants to get no-hit or have a perfect game thrown against them while doing so. Practically i'm hearing the opposing team of whoever is throwing the no-hitter/perfect game should just lay down, for the sake of history possibly being made. If any player goes up to the plate, under practically any circumstance (rain is approaching, team has the lead, they want to make the game official, hack away) without the intention of getting on base anyway within that given players abilities, i have lost all respect. You never lay down for anyone. Frankly, I think that the situation dictates it. If it's a 1 run game, your team still has a shot if they can get one baserunner. If it's a 5 run game, you need a legit meltdown by the pitcher. Do you bunt for hits very often in a 5 run game? Not really, not even Juan Pierre did that very often I'd guess.
  13. Seriously...Mark Buehrle pitched a freaking perfect game. Wow.
  14. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 06:52 PM) freddie time! Is that on his pitching schedule? Because I'm not sure who else is left who they'd actually bring up.
  15. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 06:50 PM) Colon wouldn't be ready in time for Danks next start so that would mean the Sox would have to skip a turn in the rotation. If Torres has already been sent down though, it'll be too late and both him and Poreda will be unavailable. Who else is left who'd be available?
  16. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 06:23 PM) Wallace is overhyped, IMO. He's a very good prospect, and I think he'll become a really solid hitter, but from the little I've seen of him, I don't see him becomming a perennial all-star and batting title contender like some people are hyping him up to be. Also, he's destined for 1B/DH. The only problem with such a trade is that Holliday is a FA after the year, and Wallace is a hefty price to pay for 3/8ths of a year of Holliday and 2 draft picks. If they can sign him to an extension though, I say do it. That lineup gets a whole lot better with Holliday in it. Only problem would be that it is right handed heavy. You'd probably like to see a left handed bat in there. If the cards have some confidence in their drafting that's a heck of a pick load between Holliday and DeRosa.
  17. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 06:14 PM) MLB has all 27 outs in a highlight clip http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?content_id=5699295 That clip is 5:31 long. That is only 1/6 of the time he spent on the mound.
  18. QUOTE (IamtheHBOMB @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 06:30 PM) I checked earlier. It's at an insane 2.08 whereas his WHIP sits at 1.11 (a tick higher than Buehrle's). Exactly. That number is so insane that if he holds that throughout the season, no one could vote against him. If it rises in to the high 2's and Mark is in the low 3's, then we can talk.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 05:43 PM) So I missed the game today due to a company picnic. Anything cool happen? I felt weirdly cheerful in the game thread and I couldn't figure out why...
  20. I dunno, any time that "Going for it all" winds up involving making 2 prospects-for-big-name-guys-about-to-be-FA trades, I'm not sure you're good enough to be going for it all. Although...that would really hammer the Cubs's chances.
  21. QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 03:17 PM) What you have to love about Mark is that 15 years from now he will sit and watch this game with his kids and he will be exactly the same guy. He's an awesome man's man. And he'll be able to point out at least 1 of his kids.
