QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 02:35 PM) Yeah Obama straight up broke all of his "transparency" promises. No other way to put it. They're probably promises he never should've made and he realized that once he got into office. The White House released that list tonight. It was under threat of a lawsuit, but the Cheney administration fought that exact lawsuit for years.

QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 06:08 PM) Ryan and Schumacker have been pretty solid. With only Ludwick and Rasmus producing in the OF, I'd have to disagree. I know they have put their toe in the water about Holliday. Duncan's just been that bad though. I really hope the Red Sox keep signing high salary type A shortstops. It helps everyone else in the league get better.

QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 05:27 PM) Probably, but do you think it will escalate? Not unless she's been stealing from the legal fund or something vastly beyond what this reads as.

QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 04:53 PM) Is this the other shoe? Overall this one appeared to be fairly minor to me.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 04:35 PM) Do you really think the White Sox would sign someone for more than 3 years and more than $10 million per season as a FA in this offseason? Just curious...I think the financial landscape for Sox future contracts has changed dramatically from 06-08. Comparing Sabathia/Burnett/Tex and Yankees free-spending ways doesn't have very much relevancy to us anymore. With the money the Sox have coming off the book this offseason, I think they'll be suitors for anyone who fits their roster. JD extending is a possible, Holliday is certainly possible as a corner OF if the bids don't go all Boras-y on us and hit $15 mil a year, a run at a solid or RH starting pitcher is entirely an option. Trading from our glut of infielders to grab someone who is expensive from another team is also plausible. This team has enormous salary flexibility going in to next season, and I expect KW to use some of it.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 04:33 PM) Plus, Fenway doesn't exactly favor left handed bats as much as right handed ones. It depends on the kind of hitter they are. Line drives off the monster from a LH batter are a great way to make a living, and that's still a really short fence in RF. -
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 04:07 PM) You rarely trade a upper echelon hitting prospect (especially MI) for a upper echelon pitching prospect. Or at least you rarely see it happen. Bucholtz is quite good but also a bit over-rated due to being in Boston. Obviously he'd be the Sox best prospect and immediately join the rotation but it isn't worth the cost (ie, Beckham). It acutally kind of makes sense on paper for both teams...the Sox have a glut of infielders who are most valuable at 2b/SS, the Red Sox have too many pitchers and a gaping hole at SS. Frankly though I wouldn't do it without another piece for this reason; the White Sox don't need another starting pitcher THAT desperately, while the Red Sox could use a SS.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 04:05 PM) Then she said, even my three year old doesn't believe this crap. (Checks the spanking thread for an explanation...) J/k

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 03:32 PM) I assume the Duncan for Lugo deal went down? Duncan really fell off a cliff didn't he?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 03:04 PM) Richard in the 9th would have been scary. I have no problem with Ozzie going with Jenks, he is getting paid $5.6 million this year to get outs in the 9th. The only criticism I have is why not have someone ready in case Bobby pitched like he had the previous 4 outings? He really should have been yanked after 2 hitters and certainly after he loaded them up, and most definitely after they tied it up. I'd agree with the logic if there wasn't 1 problem with it; the bases were loaded after 4 pitches in the 9th last night. If you'd told Cooper to get on the phone and get Thornton up after the first guy was on, he'd be hanging up the phone with the bases loaded. -
Here's a different way to phrase it:

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 03:05 PM) Then ask your buddy Democrats why they are cutting the piss out of it to fund the general health care? Because when its costs grow at the same rate as health care costs in the rest of the economy, and health care costs are growing at 2x the rate of inflation, it doesn't take long for Medicare costs to go to infinity either. There's an awful lot of efficiency that could be squeezed out of Medicare through comparative effectiveness research and taking away Congress's power to set reimbursement rates (thus getting them out of the hands of lobbyists). Not as much as could be saved by cleaning up the disaster of inefficiency that is the private health care market, but still, certainly significant.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 02:58 PM) Are you kidding me? When was the last time that Jenks missed a significant amount of time due to an injury? How do you define significant time? He hit the 15 day DL last year.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 02:59 PM) I've had this arguement with you guys too many times to count now and I just get dismissed. Government HAS to be the way to go. Kill the elderly - "give 'em a painkiller". The elderly of course is a wonderful argument. Oh what will happen if the elderly are covered by a government based system? The horror, the horror. I can't imagine how much the U.S. would suck if that happened.

Actually, the straw-man there is that you act like you've somehow eliminated all the other options for cost controls.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 01:37 PM) The thing is, all Mark would have to do is run his mouth every once in a while to get attention, and he would have a $20 million a year contract some where and he would be all over ESPN. Complaining about the weird lights doesn't count? He needs to be more of a racist. That would work.

The WSJ yesterday had a piece on how executive pay still seems to be going up, and is at the point where it is crowding out everything else. That graph does not include stock options execs grant to themselves either.

Replace the word "Healthcare" with the word "Energy" and this suddenly sounds really familiar.

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 10:21 AM) I still feel the best move we can make right now, besides for an ace, would be a Rolen level 3b, move beckham to 2b where he's of most value. Getz has a .947 OPS in July.
