  1. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Jan 16, 2009 -> 07:29 AM) Ok say Paxson is fired. Give me an ideal GM/Coach combo that can take over. I really don't know about GM's, but I've got a variety of names of people I'm collecting who might be much better coaching options next year. Avery Johnson Paul Silas Thom Thibodeau John Kuester Lester Conner Tim Grgurich 4 assistants who have put in their dues in 10+ years on the bench, 2 retreads with decent reputations. I'm more than happy to add more to my list if others have suggestions
  2. This photo will be hanging all over the country for the next 4 8 years.
  3. QUOTE (SleepyWhiteSox @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 08:07 PM) He's only had ONE pretty good year... I have NOT liked the money he got since the very moment I heard it. Yeah, I felt we needed him more than gordon, but not for that much. Ridiculous he got that much coming off the year he did. There is not one move pax has made (and many he has not made) that I have liked. And Pooh doesn't count. Thank goodness he's from Chicago... One thing about Deng right now...the offense we're running currently isn't really tailored to him any more. His job in the current offense is to sort of sit outside and wait for a shot to come to him rather than generate anything. Yeah, his performance is down, but if he's not in position to do what he's good at, we ought to expect that.
  4. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Jan 16, 2009 -> 07:52 AM) My question is: Why do so many people want this guy in the post? What has he done to prove he will be any better than Paulson? After all, he played a major role in who failed/survived. You're asking us? You should be the one telling us. Am I the only one who remembers the DJIA jumping 500 points the day that news of his appointment was leaked?
  5. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jan 16, 2009 -> 07:31 AM) And if you ban guns because they 'kill people' (kinda like tose evilSUV's that are always reported as being involved in crashes, never the driver did it, always the SUV), then what's next, banning knives because people stab each other with them? Dont laugh, they are trying to do it in England, which has one of the more restrictive gun laws around, yet has violent crimes increasing at a double digit rate. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1411652/posts Again, I don't have the answer...but I have to question your data here. First and foremost, looking at the rate of increase doesn't necessarily tell you anything about the actual rate of occurrence. Secondly, a lot of the data out there disagrees with the claim that the UK violent crime, murder, or whatever rates are increasing at double-digits per year...depending on exactly which method of surveying it you use.
  6. Circuit City to liquidate its remaining merchandise, shutter its remaining 567 stores, lay off 30,000. Aside from the impact of dumping those people on to the job market, another thing a liquidation like this one really does is it hurts an awful lot of smaller shops. Think about your neighborhood Circuit City...how many of them share parking lots with another store? Or have a small cafe next to it? Or even sit as part of a mall? All of those shops now suddenly will have lost a big part of their customers, because no one's coming there for the Circuit City any more, and if the building starts to get run down or trashy, then you're talking major urban blight.
  7. Straight up...Vazquez vs. Colon...with the salary constraints, you still go with Vazquez, but it's narrow. But...Vazquez vs. Colon + the catching prospect we so sorely needed in Flowers, clearly that goes to the latter. Especially when you add in $10 million. And Lillibridge.
  8. Good. Really didn't want him on our team with that contract and with the kids we have.
  9. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 06:02 PM) NO infringement? No. That would be chaos. Certain people shouldn't have guns for obvious reasons, for one. One interpretation of that amendment could still fit with that...since a well regulated militia is allowed...law enforcement and the military therefore have the right to possess firearms. (Not necessarily the interpretation I agree with).
  10. Seriously...it's already the Bank of America, we now own it, why not just own them the whole way? In 5-10 years we can privatize the banking system again if we really want.
  11. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 05:39 PM) Actually now that I've voted I don't really understand the question and don't know what I've voted for. It depends a lot on your definition of the word "literally".
  12. I abstain on answering this poll until the trading deadline.
  13. MLB's owners have made a couple of rule changes. The coin flip for home field is no longer operative. The other major rule change - postseason games will not end early even if it's raining - they'll be suspended.
  14. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 04:03 PM) What i want to know is what the heck happens if Owens gets hurt? Wise? I still dont see a #1 or #2 hitter!!!! aaaaah I really have to believe that a move is coming up. KW wouldnt really go into a year this thin at several positions. Getz/Lillibridge have produced minor league numbers that would make them reasonable backup options for the #1 slot. Yes, I know minor league numbers don't translate, so don't point that out...as a backup plan, it's not the worst thing in the world.
  15. Red Sox lock up Youkilis through 2012, 4 year, $40 million extension, with an option for 2013.
  16. Glenn Beck's new show on Fox News debuts next Monday, on Martin Luther King Day, the day before Obama's inauguration. His first guest will be Sarah Palin. There's just so much that's wonderful in that statement for a Democrat that I had to put it in this thread. Awesomeness.
  17. QUOTE (G&T @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 02:03 PM) He literally only said "brace for impact." or something to that effect. I'd imagine that not only was there not a lot of time to say more, he probably also had his hands pretty full.
  18. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 02:02 PM) Did you even click my link? Doh! No, you got me completely. Bah. I didn't want to be the jagoff who was making a joke if someone actually perished.
  19. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 01:47 PM) Exactly. They did that with Loaiza and I thought signing him was agod option at the tiem also. If he doesn't have it he doesn't have it and they will release him. My guess is it won't take that long either to see what he can deliver. Do we know for certain this is a deal such that he can't be sent to the minors?
  20. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 01:55 PM) 6 Reported Missing in Hudson River Crash Post removed.
  21. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 01:53 PM) I always wondered why they didn't leave the part about a "water landing" out when we were flying from Austin to Phoenix or Las Vegas. I mean, I know if the plane is going down, there may not be much you can do, but there ain't much water out that way...you'd think they'd be able to control just long enough not to land in that oasis. If you've got everything working but no landing gear and you can aim for Lake Mead, maybe that makes more sense than slamming in to the ground?
  22. QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 12:53 PM) The way I understand it, the Dodgers still pay him what they owed him in his contract. Since he will be released, he can sign with another team for league minimum and get paid by the Dodgers. Ouch. I'm not an expert on the collective bargining agreement so if anyone understands it differently please correct me. Also, Harold Reynolds was commenting on how several teams would take a look at him for league minimum. That's pretty much correct...in exchange for the Dodgers granting him his release, he agreed to accept only $5 million of the what, $18 million on his contract as payment this year...the rest of the money is deferred until later, so he still gets the full value of it, and he can sign elsewhere as a FA. The Dodgers are basically paying him to not play there this year because they get to defer the money. The MLBPA wouldn't allow him to do that if he didn't get the full value of his contract out of it.
  23. QUOTE (Hawkfan @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 12:47 PM) Why would Andruw Jones receive league minimum? That sounds rediculous to me no matter how bad he has sucked the last two years. Has his stock really dropped that much? Quite simply...yes.
  24. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 09:52 AM) I agree with this as well. But I'd be surprised if more than one was playoff-good. It's difficult to see a Wild Card team coming out of the Central... at this point, anyway. I'll agree with that, but it's not because I think the Central will implode like it did last year. I just think that the Rays, Yankees, and Red Sox are going to be feasting on enough teams that it'll be hard for the WC to not come out of the east.
