I'm just gonna unilaterally move this to the Filibuster. No offense.

QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Feb 16, 2008 -> 04:32 PM) hmmm.... voter issues in a hillary state. I'd never have thought it! I've read reports that said there were Hillary districts that screwed up somewhat too. Although BO probably will be the beneficiary of a delegate or two after everything is actually totaled up there.

QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Feb 16, 2008 -> 06:00 AM) But, at the end of the day, if this woman had an ounce of self-control, this whole situation wouldn't have happened. You know, I did some thinking about this while biking home last night. Specifically a bit of the math. Now, I can't testify to the rest of her debt situation, I don't know what her mortgage payment is, how many kids she's supporting, etc. But it seems to me, if I was in a situation where my income was about to jump to $6000 a month, and I genuinely believed that, I could easily have afforded this car in a reasonable time frame if that's how I wanted to spend my money. A $6000 a year position would pay $72,000 a year. If she's paying, oh, let's say, $2000 a month for housing, that knocks off 1/3 of that amount. That still leaves about $40,000 after taxes available for the rest of her expenses. If she had $30,000 as the down payment...and the purchase decision on the car was the only major purchase she made, there's no reason why she couldn't afford that car, especially if she took out the loan over 5 or 6 years, if her income was actually going to go back up to $6000/month. Heck, my income is a lot lower than that, but I did the math last night, and if I wanted to, I could have afforded that car. I'm not stupid enough to buy that car, but just as a matter of math, I could if I wanted to. -
QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 16, 2008 -> 09:24 AM) I propose that we take the direct financial adminitrative support the UN receives from us, and use that money for foreign aid. I'm sure the UN wouldn't have a problem with that. And if anyone actually bothers to do the math, they'll note that doing exactly as you say will move us from .1% of our budget going to foreign aid to having .103% of our budget going to foreign aid. Thus getting us that much closer to the goal.

QUOTE(Middle Buffalo @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 07:02 PM) What I find fascinating about this stuff is that the guys who admit to using steroids or HGH pretty much get a free pass. Granted, the're not the high profile types like Clemens, McGwire, or Bonds, but still some big names. Pettite was made to look like an angel at the hearing, yet he admitted to using HGH two times in 2001. Later it came out that he also used HGH in 2004 - and he got it from his Dad. So he has some credibility issues as well. Assuming he used HGH, Clemens had to know there was a possibility that eventually he'd be outed. Why not formulate a better defense than denial and defiance beforehand? Say you used to recover from an injury, and the public forgives. Lie, even if all the evidence seems to implicate you as a user, and the public gets offended. If I'm a MLB player, and I've used HGH, I'm getting my story ready now for when I am eventually outed. I might even make a statement on my own admitting that I used for a short time for whatever reason. If Jim Thome came out and said he used HGH on the advice of a doctor or trainer to recover from a back injury, I don't think people would be outraged. Everyone uses drugs or medicine at some point to recover from illness or injury. I don't like it...but I'll bet you that if Clemens had come out and said that the Mitchell Report was true, word for word, and he had started juicing in 1998, apologized, and asked the HOF voters to take in to account that he'd never done anything before hand, He'd probably still make the HOF under the absurd "He was a HOFer before he starting juicing" argument we hear all the time about Bonds.

"Wake up Dead Man" - U2. For some real creativity, you could try finding the "It's Morning in America" ad from Reagan in 84 on Youtube and use that phrase.

I once woke up to Oasis's "What's the Story (Morning Glory)" back in high school, and found the repetitive "I need a little time to wake up wake up" quite effective.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 05:11 PM) A.) If she doesnt realize that 100k car is a lot of money and while on disability its not wise then she is at fault as well. B.) If they told her the car was 30k and then it became 100k then sure. But she knew the price. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they focused hard on the payments and not on the total value. That's what I was instructed to do when I was in sales, that's what the Salesperson tried to do with me when I bought my Civic, etc. -
QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 04:24 PM) You see the prezident is using some scare tatics to get us to waive our rights to privacy? http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/02/15/bush.fisa/ This isn't related to this particular case because he bought the guns legally, but can we make it a felony with a mandatory prison sentence for possesion of a firearm without a FOID card. They're so easy to get but the thugs, gangstas, and other scumbags don't want background checks for the card. Just what we need...an even larger prison population.

QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 03:27 PM) Yeah, what Sox4life said. Soccer riots everywhere? ? Class riots in France? They are just as violent over there, and more prone to violent protest than kids here in the states. Molotov cocktails, anyone? It might not be the hip thing to do here in the U.S. recently, but within the past 40 years the U.S. has had MORE than its share of riots. Heck, the number and intensity of the riots some cities have endured (Chicago in 68, L.A. in 92, heck as recently as Cincinnati in 2001) might well be related to the reason that France has had a series of them more recently than we have...because the riots here have forced some changes through systems.

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 02:44 PM) ???? Have you ever worked with an Assistant United States Attorney or anyone in the United States Attorney's office... Or are you just speculating? Because if its just speculation, thats fine, but at least say as much. Whether or not he actually has worked for them, there is actually evidence to support the claim. The main nugget was thrown around all the time when the Vick Indictments came down...Most federal prosecutors in this country have a rate of success (in terms of either a conviction or a plea bargain) well over 90%. Basically, if they come after you, the odds are in their favor unless they're coming after you for personal or political reasons.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 02:08 PM) Sales scum is out there. I have no problem throwing venom in their direction. A person can be lead astray if say they are misrepresented on the price of the vehicle. My problem is when someone knows the price of an item and then cannot figure out that its expensive. A condo might cost 100k and yet you have 30 years to pay that note off. And since we're all pointing at the thing that bugs us the most, I'll point again at the fact that someone approved this loan without bothering to actually verify the income, thus allowing the fraud to take place due to simple laziness or due to that no longer being the job of anyone in the system. -
QUOTE(shipps @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 08:09 AM) What does this mean for Laker expectations for this year? http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-l...p&type=lgns Who knows? Great players can sometimes succeed with problems like that. He hasn't exactly sucked over the past week has he?

QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 09:08 AM) Sometimes, the constituency needs protection from the government. The government is not all-knowing or all-wise. It is often corrupt, stupid, incompetent, and greedy. The first step in confiscating every weapon is registering and tracking every weapon. And yet...there are so many people out there who want to trust the same all knowing, all wise government with the right to read every one of these posts, every one of my emails, and every one of my phone calls, without even requiring a warrant. Kinda strange isn't it? Sorry for the thread hijack.

QUOTE(Melissa1334 @ Feb 14, 2008 -> 05:42 PM) im just not exactly sold on the dbacks' offense. the young guys have to break through this yr 1.Chris Young CF 2. Orlando Hudson 2B 3. Eric Byrnes LF 4. Mark Reynolds 3B 5. Conor Jackson 1B 6. Stephen Drew SS 7. Justin Upton RF 8. Chris Snyder They do still have a couple things going for them. Several of those guys that they need to break through are unbelievably talented...Upton, Drew, Young, etc. And on top of that, they've massively upgraded their pitching staff going basically from Livan Hernandez to Dan Haren. You're right though, they can't have a negative run scoring rate and count on luck to carry them again this year. -
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Feb 14, 2008 -> 03:51 PM) Well Livan had a 5.34 ERA for Washington pitching in a real big pitchers park in the NL. Is anyone going to trade for him if he has an ERA over 6, just because he is a veteran who can log innings? Because that's the most likely scenario I see occuring here. Imagine this scenario. The White Sox start off hot, but their 5th starter (pick one) wins 1 game every 2 years. We can call this scenario "2003-2004 White Sox". But, they're still in the playoff hunt. Picking up a legit 5th starter would save the bullpen and give you a shot at winning a few of those games, which could even over 2 months translate to 4-5 more wins in the standings, and which would leave both the bullpen and the rest of the starting rotation more fresh for the playoff hunt. In that case, if the Twins asked us for some random player that they liked who wasn't our top guy, and maybe some money, sure, of course you do that deal. Every year there's a team or two like that. Had the Mets done a deal like that last year, they make the playoffs.

Gavin Floyd will be our 2nd best starting pitcher this year. Orlando Cabrera will disappoint. -
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Feb 14, 2008 -> 03:37 PM) I'll be surprised if anyone trades for him at the deadline though, he'd have to produce pretty well for that to happen, and I don't see that occuring. The D-Backs dealt for him, didn't they? If I'm the Twins and my scouting dept. has produced hidden gem after hidden gem, and I'm trying to rebuild for a year or so...why not take a flyer on a guy like Livan, and see if I can't steal a gem from someone who isn't expecting it.
