QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 07:02 PM) So what do you think of the plan being floated in California to change the way that their electoral votes are awarded, esentially to award one vote per district winner, instead of winner take all in that state? It's a good plan if it's done nationwide. If it's only done in California, or in CA plus a few other states, it hands the election to the Republicans until enough states follow. A few years ago there was a measure in the Legislature here to do just that...if and when the equivalent of 270+ electoral votes worth of the country does the same thing, and that was a measure worth supporting. I believe it passed, but I'd have to look it up.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 06:54 PM) Exactly. And whether we like it or not, if somehow he could string a few good starts together and Coop could genuinely help him, he would make this team an awful lot better next year (because it would give KW the ability to move a starter and still have a full rotation)

Of course, I posted this in the 2 Contreras threads 20 minutes ago, but no one likes me very much anyway.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 06:33 PM) Don't you suppose he'll be looking for a closing gig? I'll give Jenks the 8th inning.

I'll take Rivera. I don't care about the price.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 06:22 PM) Sweeney pulled. Sweeney Pulled in the 2nd inning and Charlotte's entire lineup shuffled around. Kenny Perez from 2nd to RF, Thomas Perez from SS to 2nd, Earl Snyder from 3rd Base to SS, Ricks in at 3rd base. That doesn't sound good, unless Ryan was called up. Ryan did field a ball in the top 1/2 of that inning.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 06:21 PM) Personally, I hope he remains in Minnesota as a face of their franchise after giving some kind of discount. I have difficulty imagining the discount he'd have to give them to fit into their budget. He'd still get like 25% of the team's total salary on his own.

White Sox vs. Yankees, 8/01/07 (L)

QUOTE(soxchick1224 @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 06:16 PM) Lets see what Boone can do now. ESPN switched to the sox game since A-Rod was up so everyone can see him ground out! If all you did was watch highlights of ARod's at bats on ESPN, you'd think the White Sox were kickin' ass! -

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 05:51 PM) Gosh would it be nice for Johan to leave the AL... Could you imagine the numbers he'd put up against NL teams?

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 04:10 PM) I just do not believe that - but then again, I'm not sheeple, either, and I'm intelligent to know the difference. Then you were part of the 30% who paid attention to more than the words "Saddam" and "Al Qaeda" in those speeches in 2002-2003, I applaud you for that, and still think that the conflating of the 2 in the minds of the majority of Americans was fully deliberate and 100% necessary for the war to have happened.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 04:03 PM) Richar not in the lineup and Fields batting 2nd is just stupid. But then again, keeping s*** players and trading the solid ones is stupid too. He just needed some time off. Those 2 games over the weekend really took a lot out of him. -
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 03:57 PM) Again, not one quote that says Saddam Hussein or Iraq WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR 9/11. NOT ONE. Was Al Queda and Iraq linked? Possibly. That's two different things. Linking Al Queda and Iraq vs. Iraq and 9/11 are two completely different things. Yes. Very different things. One of them would be a Causus Belli. One would not. Which is why it didn't seem anyone in the Administration went out of their way to correct the pre-war polls that found some 70% of Americans believed Saddam was responsible for 9/11. Because they needed the American people to believe that to have their war.

Should the Sox consider standing pat?

QUOTE(striker62704 @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 03:49 PM) He does have alot to do. Alot of holes to fill, not alot of trading chips and not much money to spend. I'm betting Garland or Vazquez will have to go. Much like Buehrle last season, it makes very little sense to hold onto Garland if you don't think you can sign him before next season ends. He should net significantly more value in a trade than 2 draft picks would hold. Then again, 1.33 years of Garland might have been worth more than 1 year of him. -
Buddy Bell will step down as manager of the Royals at the end of this season.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 02:19 PM) That's true. I wish he did have more balls then he now has... to do exactly what he said he would. He wimped out. Unfortunately, there's one more big issue, and its' perhaps the biggest issue in that entire region: the Pakistani bomb. Unless the actual reason is Bush being an idiot, it's the only reason I can find why the U.S. would put up with this sort of behavior from Pakistan. The U.S. has essentially no choice but to try to keep the army in charge in Pakistan, for the simple reason that if this government falls and either chaos were to erupt or even worse an actual Islamist, Taliban style government were to take some amount of control...that government would have the bomb. And that is essentially the worst possible result I can imagine. People can talk tough all they want about going into Pakistan and getting Bin Laden...about how we should have badgered Musharraf into helping us...but if we were to take those actions, have everything work, but also have the Pakistani government fall, it would be an unmitigated disaster even if it destroyed every remaining fragment of Al Qaeda.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 02:17 PM) That's completely different then saying 9/11 and Iraq were linked. Well, Dick Cheney was repeating the repeatedly debunked Atta/Iraqi Intelligence Agent meeting all the way through around 2005 or so, and I think that one counts for something. It is worth asking one other question on this subject...what exactly was the point of saying that Iraq and Al Qaeda were linked in 2002? The exact same thing could be said about every single country in the Middle East, and in fact, could be said even more so about most of them. According to the 9/11 commission report, it turned out that Iran had far more links to AQ, including allowing its members to pass willingly through its borders, than Iraq did. Kuwait and Saudi Arabia had given them far more funds, and had far greater AQ presences, as did almost every other nation in that region. Iraq had the Zarqawi group, which was stuck in the northern part of the country and literally protected from Saddam by the U.S. So what exactly was the point of even saying that Iraq and Al Qaeda were linked?

QUOTE(BaseballNick @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 01:41 PM) We should be spending every dime we can on the bullpen, so I'm fine with Rowand instead of Hunter. The difference between Rowand and Hunter money-wise this offseason is going to be less than the price of 1 relief pitcher, IMO.

I also want nothing to do with Tejada, no matter the price. On second though, I might consider Contreras and Uribe for Tejada. Which means, no Tejada. Getting older, recent injury, the cloud that seems to have followed him the last 3 years, non stellar defense, seemingly rapidly declining production, and Vitamin E shots or whatever the accusation was. Just nothing I want to give up even Broadway for.

QUOTE(ChWRoCk2 @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 11:35 AM) all they really need is a solid leadoff bat in that lineup to replace Castillo and they might be set. Think they'd be interested in Erstad/Podsednik?
