QUOTE(BearSox @ Jul 29, 2007 -> 02:29 PM) Also, to anyone wondering how the Red Sox would get Dye in the lineup 5 times a week, they would platoon him RF with Drew vs. lefties, and plug him into 1B, LF, and DH to give Manny, Youk, and Papi rest. Right now, I think the less playing time the BoSox have to give to JD Drew, the happier they might be.

Seriously? I assume Indiana still remains number one, with its gigantic list of 8591 targets the DHS identified within that state.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 29, 2007 -> 07:07 PM) Bill Clinton, you idiot. The solution is simple: promise you won't torture him, and break that promise "behind their backs". That's why it's a covert action. Same advice for Bush. It's not like they'd do a ton of snooping anyway into what happened of bin Laden after his arrest. Um, yeah, because no one ever, anywhere, ever has any interest in the treatment of high-level prisoners. And there are no standing laws and treaties requiring us to give those people access to them. And no one would ever expect to see that man on trial anywhere. These bruises? Oh, yes, he fell down some stairs. -
QUOTE(gosox41 @ Jul 28, 2007 -> 08:58 PM) So with Floyd in the rotation, do the Sox still hope to contend in '08? Bob The way things are looking right now...I would say that I think the Sox have a reasonable shot. But to my eyes, there's still exactly 1 position that needs fixed before next year. A few minor tweaks to the bullpen wouldn't hurt, but we desperately need to improve at shortstop, end of story. We need a little luck and our youth to keep developing for me to be right...but we need to fix that gaping hole at SS>

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 29, 2007 -> 07:26 AM) And if you start excluding people before anyone has any idea what they have to say, you end up with the same recycled crap as your candidates. One potential solution to this problem, and something I wouldn't mind actually seeing, is a group of debates with smaller groups selected from the overall flock. I mean, you can't tell me it wouldn't be interesting to see Biden, Clinton, Edwards, and Kucinich on the floor for a debate, or something like that. Where each one gets a lot more than 10 minutes or so per session. I'm personally hoping that the Republican Youtube debate comes out like this; everyone except Ron Paul and John McCain had pulled out of it at last report (ahhh, young people, internets, series of tubes...AAIIIIEEEEEE!!!!). That's a debate I'd love to see. One other little note...with the current debate setup, it's not like everything has wound up fair anyway. The networks have obviously devoted more time to the "Major" candidates in each session. Obama, Clinton, and Edwards, will usually get about 2x as much talking in as Gravel or Kucinich, so if the moderator is excluding the people anyway, then you have to wonder whether that time is even worth spending on them.

So, I will also add, the Simpsons movie was better than I expected. The wife loved it, I thought it rated in at very good. Pleasantly surprised.

QUOTE(bigred3535 @ Jul 28, 2007 -> 01:54 PM) He's not going to be a superstar or anything but I think it's entirely reasonable that Richar can hit .270-.280 10 homers, 25 doubles and 20 SB for the next 5 years - which would put him in at least the top half of second baseman in the majors (or make him essentially an Iguchi Redux except much cheaper and much younger). To dismiss him as a waste of playing time without him ever having played a game in a Sox uniform is a little harsh. Also, the fact that the D'Backs gave him up doesn't signal much to me as he was blocked by Stephen Drew, Orlando Hudson and Alberto Callaspo. I definitely think from what I've heard and read taht he can be a contributor on the major league level. Like I said, not a star but a solid player. At any rate he's been mashing ever since he got to Charlotte so now's as good a time as ever to give him a good look. I'd like to add, it's also not out of the question that he could be better than that. He's hit 20 Hr's in the minors before, he's hit .300+ in the minors before, and he does have good speed. But again, he's still very raw all things considered, so it's going to take him some time to get down the knack of hitting the real big guys, and it's pretty darn hard to know what his actual ceiling is. But if nothing else, at least we have some decent talent plugged into that spot for very little money for the next few years.

QUOTE(iamshack @ Jul 28, 2007 -> 01:40 PM) If you non-tender Crede, you also lose any chance of getting anything for him. Although the way the market is right now, I'm not sure you're going to get a whole lot anyways. You would get draft picks though. All depends on what Joe does next year. If nothing else, he's not going to be making $10 million. He comes out as the hitter he was in 06 next year, 15 home runs, .300 average at the break, with the usual defense, and no back issues, and someone will buy him if you want to sell. The reason we're having so much trouble moving Iguchi and Dye is that they're both having below-average seasons, especially JD, and so that has hurt their value a lot. If Joe comes out and struggles...fine...bench his ass and put Josh back at 3rd, and all we've lost is a couple million dollars.
-
QUOTE(iamshack @ Jul 28, 2007 -> 01:45 PM) Agreed, but you also have to factor in 1 more thing, and that's your timeline. Obviously, if what we hear is correct, Kenny wants to retool rather than rebuild, an important factor is getting someone in return who can contribute next season as opposed to 3 seasons from now. Fine. Take that into account in the argument as well...so in other words, you weight the value you get back of someone who could help us next year in comparison with the value of the 2 picks. If you don't get what you want, you still don't make the deal. The Sox are sort of in a win-win situation either way; if no one meets their price, the draft picks are ok, if someone does meet their price, then they can take it.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 28, 2007 -> 01:09 PM) Gee, I hope that's not true. I can understand wanting a little bit more but totally dumping on the deal? That's a pretty good package right there -- if the Angels added Willits to the deal (removing the two prospects), I'd make that deal in a heartbeat. You get your leadoff man for next season along with payroll flexibility (and Kotchman is no slouch at first, either). I don't let Konerko go to the Halos if Wood is not involved. I would have told them bye at that also.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 28, 2007 -> 12:39 PM) Kenny Lofton is hitting .303 this year with over 20 steals. He netted Texas a A ball catcher originally signed in 2002, now with his 3rd organization. This dissappointment on this board is going to be immense if you really think Dye is going to net a top prospect for 2 months of his services, $7million or $8 million contract and .230 batting average. Then I will be happy with 2 picks. Here's my simple explanation. With a #1 guy, a Soriano, or a Buehrle...if you're trading them, even as a rent-a-player, you expect a king's ransom in return, because they're that good...but at some level, you do have to deal them, because they should bring back a lot more value than the 2 draft picks. If you're trading a lesser player, or a guy having a bad season, then you weigh what you get in the deal against the draft picks. If what we get is not better than a sandwich and a second, or a sandwich and a late first, then you don't make the deal.

QUOTE(Jeremy @ Jul 28, 2007 -> 11:41 AM) The guy's pitched five mediocre innings. I don't know what he's done to distinguish himself from guys like Aardsma or McDougal who have good stuff and have had successful stretches in the majors but haven't been able to get it done this season. Well, that's the remarkable thing about these bullpen guys...bullpen performance is historically so variable from one season to another that it's really hard to be certain about anything. Personally? I'm actually starting to like the situation for next year, given that if nothing else, we have a lot of guys with good arms/stuff to choose from. Aardsma, MMac, Jenks, Thornton, Logan, Day, Haeger, Wasserman, Floyd, etc. And all of them will have had at least a year on this team/in this system to learn a bit, and most of them are starting off with pretty good stuff, so I still find it hard to believe that this bullpen won't step upwards next year just off of the percentages.

QUOTE(Mplssoxfan @ Jul 28, 2007 -> 06:19 AM) The Iron Law of Unintended Consequences would rear its ugly head if the switch were undertaken. Because of that alone, I'm leery of it. Can anything that the law of unintended consequences could possibly do be worse than 8 years of Bush/Cheney?

QUOTE(frankie5angels @ Jul 28, 2007 -> 10:59 AM) Why would the Phillies even think about doinf this trade?? Dye will not get you either Bourne or Ellsbury or Bucholz. Dye will get you Wily Mo and maybe another prospect but that's about it. He is a two month rental, people aren't gonna give up top prospects for rental players, let alone give them up for players that are having bad years. Alot of people on here were shocked at what little we got for Iguchi. I have a feeling people are gonna be REALLY shocked if we trade Dye and see what we get. He is a 2 month rental who also is virtually guaranteed to bring you back A level compensation, so you're basically trading JD and at worst a sandwich pick and a 2nd round pick in exchange for whatever you get. If another team isn't willing to part with something quality, fine, then JD hangs around til the end of the season and we take the picks. This isn't like Soriano or Buehrle, where if they walked, you were going to lose a ton in value because they're worth so much more on the trade market than those 2 picks would be.

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jul 28, 2007 -> 09:54 AM) EDIT: I'll be incredibly happy if I'm eating crow at season's end and Richar has hit .260-.280 and shown good potential in all stat categories. Honestly, I really like what the kid brings to the table, but I'm also convinced he's going to wind up struggling here for the first couple months. The kid is the classic example of what you call "Raw talent" and he has been that way at every single level. He had barely played BBall when the DBacks originally first signed him, and he hung around their lower levels for several years while learning the game. He's taken some time to adapt to each level he's gone to as well. He was tearing the cover off the ball in Charlotte, so he deserves to be up since there's just no more he can learn at AAA and he definately has the talent to be an above average major league player, but I think he's going to struggle a bit just because he is still so raw.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Jul 27, 2007 -> 08:59 PM) Right now, I just really want to know who the 3rd team is. My guess would be the Mariners. Why would the Red Sox and Mariners want to help each other?

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jul 27, 2007 -> 07:42 PM) 71 Ks in 400 at-bats. So I would say not until that K number comes down. As far as bunting though, I don't how he is, but he needs to make contact. I think he will bat last to start and have 0 RBI opportunities with Uribe in front of him. But to me, he is a 6/7 hitter because of his solid power. He does also bring some speed to the table, which would be a plus at the top of our order. The interesting thing is going to be that he's a lefty though, so a lot of that depends on how our order works out. You can't exactly put together a top 4 of Owens, Richar, Sweeney, and Thome, esp. if Podsednik or Erstad are even mentionned, and expect to be able to beat any LHP, ever. It will be nice to actually see some decent lefties coming up though. Seems like it's been a long time since we've seen that from the Sox; Konerko, Thomas, Lee, Ordonez, all big righties. -
QUOTE(BearSox @ Jul 27, 2007 -> 08:18 PM) I don't think we should be so quick to write off Day. He has an above average fastball with some life to go along with a good slider. I don't think we should be so quick to write off Aardsma either, given his fastball, but who knows what the future shall bring with these guys.

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jul 27, 2007 -> 05:47 PM) Dubee was actually one of the best pitching prospects on his squad, several of the other guys that are pitching as well as him are 2-3 years older. Drabek is the exception. Dubee was also a starter last year and is averaging something like 1.7 IP an appearance, so I don't think it's a stretch that he could be converted back to starter. The scouting report on him sounds like he could be a starter, he has 4 pitches, the question is whether he'd be any good as a starter; BA noted a pretty big variance in his velocity over a year (94 to 87) so a lot of that depends on how well he holds up to a lot of innings. -
