A bunch of IRS agents appear to have hopped into a tube, and it led them to the home of noneother than Senator Ted Stevens. Seems they decided to search the place while they were there.

QUOTE(ChWRoCk2 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 03:54 PM) I agree, really ever since they changed writers the show went downhill. I lost interest and just cant get myself to go see it. Ill wait for it to hit Fox or Blockbuster. You do realize that there wasn't just like one moment where they changed writers, correct? There's been a flux in and out since pretty much day 1.

QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 03:55 PM) You do have to wonder what the plan would be now for Erstad. Owens is getting the llok in CF and Pods and Erstad I suppose could share LF, but I am goessing another rookie gets brought up for a look-someone like Sweeney and then both the dudes are out. If Joe Crede comes back next year, at least to start the year, we're going to need somewhere for Josh Fields to play. I think Our OF next year is going to start off with Fields and Owens both somewhere in it.

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 02:56 PM) Any updates on Crede? is he training/rehabbing in Arizona? I think this was our most recent update.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 03:29 PM) so, now with 'Stavo gone, we have two open spots on the 40 man, correct? yeah, I'd say odds are good of a trade happening soon. Yes, we have 38 on the 40 man. We have 2 people on the 60 day DL also, in Ozuna and Crede, so eventually, start of next season, we'll need a little bit more room.

I now count 38 on the 40 man.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 11:24 AM) I'd like WMP and Masterson for Dye a lot. It would be even spicier if we could flip Pena somewhere else for something younger or with more upside. What do people think the chances are that WMP could bring the Sox A level compensation if he walks in 08?

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 10:50 AM) Pena and Delcarmen are the major league-ready guys that KW wants, as it will also make it easier for him to justify the trade and not saying it's a rebuilding move. People have such insane projections of what we'll really get in trades, but this one would be a strong return. The only thing that bugs me about this deal is Pena's service time. He'll be a FA after 2008. Yes, that gives Sweeney an extra year to develop, but that doesn't give us much out of Pena.
-
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 10:45 AM) No guarantee Pena stays around, and gives the Sox more options for 2008. Once again, the OF is rather scary for 2008. To get a 25 year old with 30 HR pop wouldn't be the worst idea, on top of Delcarmen. If he was 25 and was 5 years away from FA, I might agree a lot more than I do if this is the deal.

QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 10:16 AM) ... I know I know....the guy who is getting 2 million dollars for each homer he hits. I still don't see the fit. They should probably just platoon Pena and Drew and cut bait next year. I am assuming they may want to look at Dye some for first base. Still, Pena is of little interest to me unless we didn't have Jim Thome. I'd take him sure, he is young and has great power potential, but would rather see us pull in two extra 'spects with him, even if we have to toss one back to them. Presumably, another part of it has to do with the injury to Ortiz and giving him a little more time ot recover.
-
QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 10:10 AM) Agree totally. Either give us two good prospects with Pena or 1 great one. They have already offered us Pena and a good prospect. We can improve this. Plus, I have no idea why the Red Sox are in need of Dye so much. JD Drew says hi.

QUOTE(rangercal @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 10:01 AM) If they have him for a only 1 year rental, Min will win the deal. I Like Jeffersons upside. Well, if Garnett approves this deal, presumably he will be doing so with an eye towards not opting out and giving this triple threat a few years to work out. At least thats' what I'd expect. If he opts out, I doubt he's going to get a contract worth as much money as the one he has now even with salary inflation, the whole reason for him to opt out was for him to try to go to a winner.

QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 10:02 AM) Boston Globe reporting Dye for Pena + pitching prospect is possible. I say we table this and look for better offer. I don't know much about some of the names I've seen Unless the pitching prospect is one of the "Untouchables" Boston keeps talking about, then I see no reason to take this instead of the draft picks.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 10:02 AM) Hah, this was predictable. JS is giving up six years of Salty -- a catcher who, if he wasn't behind McCann, could probably step in and be one of the top eight catchers in all of baseball -- along with some other good prospects for a year-and-a-half of Tiexera. Basically, if Atlanta doesn't win it this year, I can't see this being a very good trade for Atlanta... What happens if the Braves manage to resign Tex?
-
QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 10:02 AM) I wonder is KW was talking to Atlanta at all about Dye. This is just a ridiculously good deal for Texas. I've always though Teixeira was overrated. Well, unfortunately, Dye doesn't seem to be nearly as good of a fit for Atlanta as Tex. Tex is there next year if Jones walks, so they still have that bat then, Tex plays 1b at a GG level, Dye is an OF, the Braves have some of the worst production in MLB out of their 1b slot, and the Braves have Francoeur, Harris, and Jones all producing well in the OF for them. I just don't see why that deal would make sense for the Braves.

QUOTE(rangercal @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 09:50 AM) from Roto: Bears acquired DT Darwin Walker from the Bills in exchange for an undisclosed 2008 draft pick. Buffalo likely got a fifth-round pick or better from Chicago; the Bills would've received a sixth-rounder had Walker continued to hold out of training camp and had his rights revert to the Eagles. Walker will add depth and a proven pass-rushing interior presence behind Tommie Harris in Chicago. Dusty Dvoracek is still the favorite to start. can someone explain why? I like what I have seen from Dusty. But, Darwin is a HUGE upgrade over tank and should not be on the 2nd line. Presumably, that means the Bears think Dusty is just going to be that good.

QUOTE(AirScott @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 09:48 AM) Keep in mind he had a stint on the DL, which explains the 13 home runs. And who knows how long he was playing hurt before going on the DL. He's also a Gold Glove first baseman and still ranks 11th in the AL in OPS. This is a fairly low cost for Atlanta, especially since Saltalamacchia wasn't going to supplant McCann at catcher or anything. He has those 13 home runs in 286 at bats. A normal season for him is about 600 at bats, so he'd be on a 26-27 home run/year pace. That's way down from where he was even just 2 years ago. And that's still while playing in Texas.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 29, 2007 -> 08:35 PM) I am looking at it strictly from the President and CIA's point of view. When Al Gore was asked by Clinton whether or not they should go after BLANK TERRORIST in a Snatch, Clinton pointed out it was illegal and Gore said, "Of course it's illegal -- that's why it's a covert action." Yeah, those bruises are from the stairs. Or, better yet, that's why his capture was a covert action and no, you can't see him yet [ever?]. I just can't believe you can't say, "No, he won't be tortured," and wink to the British. They're the British. They're just like CIA, only sexier. If you actually capture UBL, you'd be insane not to brag about it. You don't capture the leader of your enemy, the guy who's been the face of that organization, and then not tell anyone. Hell, especially if you're an administration with 25% approval ratings, but that's beside the point. Capturing him is pretty much the biggest trophy victory we could claim in the fight against AQ. -
Michael Vick Accepts Plea Deal Per ESPN

One of Vick's co-defendants has entered a guilty plea and is supposedly going to cooperate with the government. -
QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 08:03 AM) This just puts all the pressure back onto Rex. Now that Briggs and Walker are in the fold, the only "weakness" is QB. (It's in quotes because it may or may not be a weakness. Pep Hamilton might be the Bears best signing.) Well, and Benson needs to stay healthy too.

Miscellaneous "White Sox" Trade Notes
Balta1701 replied to Kalapse's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 09:25 AM) Ensberg might be a decent bat off the bench. Is he expensive? Well, he was just outright released by the Astros IIRC, so he pretty much would only cost you a spot on the 40 man for the rest of the year. Why we'd want to try him out when our problem for next year is having too many 3rd baseman, I'm not sure. -
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 29, 2007 -> 08:05 PM) IMO, if were just talking about a 4th OF option, Owens will get the job done for at least half the cost of Podsednik. We have been saying this for almost a year now, but as it stands, Podsednik is a zero tool player. Can't hit, can't get on base, can't run, can't field, and can't throw. There should be no spot for him on this team. Scott Podsednik would get at least $3 mil next year for the Sox to keep him; still arb. eligible. So Owens would get the job done for 1/6 of his cost or less.

QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 08:18 AM) I suppose it's just kind of a fun thing to do when other teams jettison underperforming players- that is for Sox fans to bring up the idea of acquiring them- but why would we want someone who obviously ain't got it? We have our own minor league talent, questionable as their development might be, to fill our needs. Because sometimes, teams have different needs, or can get different things out of different people. For an example, the Angels once got really really tired of the act of one of their hard throwing minor leaguers. He's now the White Sox's closer. The Giants once got really really tired of their catcher and the fact that he wasn't getting along with their pitchers. He's now the White Sox's catcher. The Braves are trying to win that division this year. They don't have room and time for a guy with some talent to sit around, take up a spot on the 40 man, and struggle. The White Sox seem to my eyes to have a couple months where they have room for that.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 08:38 AM) Smart deal for Atlanta, too. I dunno, have people actually paid attention to Tex's numbers the last 2years? They're good, but they're not nearly where they were back in 05. He's only hit 13 home runs this year. His OPS was 950 in 05, dropped to 885 last year, and is @ 920 this year (with some minor injury issues). And that's while hitting in Texas, not in Turner Field. I really have been wondering whether or not he's really going to be the long term 40 hr guy people thought 2 years ago.
