  1. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 11:27 AM) It was reported on Fox News this morning that Hamas had been firing at Israelis from around the U.N. outpost, essentially using the U.N. troops as "human shields." Considering that Hamas has no presence inside Lebanon, they're the ones in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, somehow I doubt their sourcing. Hezbollah, of course, may very well have been doing just that.
  2. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 10:56 AM) It will be interesting to see the legalistic interpretation of this specific statute. The famous Maryland law got thrown out, as I predicted, because it knowingly applied only to one company. This one actually affects about a half dozen different retailers, including groups like Target, Fields, and Sears. Here's an NYU Law School review of this law. I'm sure there will be others out there that will disagree with it, but its' the first one I saw. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 11:29 AM) One of the thing I heard speculated about was ways around this. One of the things I heard mentioned was to have more subletting of space so that they could claim that isn't "their" space and therefore shouldn't count, for example, renting out square footage to a cellphone company or to a bank. Another thing that was mentioned was 89,000 square foot buildings, with more off site storage to reduce the size needed for merchandise stock, reducing the need for square footage. There's something heartwarming about how much time and money companies will be willing to spend in order to avoid paying a decent salary to their workforce.
  3. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 10:54 AM) I think a lot of people wouldn't mind giving Makowiak more opportunities in LF. After all, he was brought in as a utility outfielder. Anything that keeps Mack out of CF.
  4. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 10:42 AM) I'm surprised there aren't more people calling for Ozuna to leadoff and Podsednik to sit on the bench. Ozuna hasn't exactly been great during this stretch either, with a nice 1/19 in July. He also has been a bit better against lefties than against righties, and then there's that whole defense thing.
  5. Not exactly on the topic of this lawsuit, but I figured people would enjoy it. Australian Reporter has a bit of fun with the Phelps clan.
  6. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 09:59 PM) Um, so when is Verlander supposed to fade again? He's right about at 130 innings this season. That's about the most he's ever pitched in his career. After right now, you start having the risk with him go up. He may be able to do this for 230 innings, but the Tigers IMO would be really gambling if they tried to ride him every 5th day throughout the whole of the postseason. Think Orel Herschiser in 88, the Dodgers rode him like a horse to a world series ring, but he never really was the same after that.
  7. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 09:47 AM) I'll speak for myself in saying Anderson's fine. But Pods is not. The call for a CRawford/ Baldelli type would be to replace Pods, with Anderson possibly moving to LF or staying in CF. Anderson should spend his entire time with the White Sox in CF. He's by far our best defensive outfielder, and he's so good it's going to be nearly impossible for us to find someone better.
  8. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 10:24 AM) I can't think of a single AL team that we've "owned" this year. Oakland? the LA Angels?
  9. QUOTE(AbeFroman @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 09:32 AM) I'm beginning to think that everyone in cycling is doping... I'm beginning to think that everyone in sports is doping.
  10. QUOTE(iamshack @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 09:19 AM) Don't forget that Sanchez was supposedly held out with a tender elbow the other night. I think if KW offers Fields and Broadway, Soriano comes to Chicago. And I don't think Kenny would offer that combination unless he knew he could get Soriano signed to an extension.
  11. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 09:06 AM) I believe the commissioner's office has to approve such a window. It would be all over the news if the trade had progressed that far. Which is of course exactly why I don't buy that rumor...because if Detroit were willing to part with Sanchez, it would have progressed very rapidly to that point. If we don't hear anything by the end of the day, i'd say with some certainty that it's bogus. Oh, and by the way, I would also like to say that I would love to see Detroit lose one of their young arms in exchange for a 2 month rental. Absolutely love to see it. It'd hurt us this season, but it'd really hurt Detroit in the next few years.
  12. QUOTE(ChiSox9 @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 09:03 AM) Correct, but doesnt that "72 hour window" not guarentee that the transaction will take place? So now announcement would be made until after that window has passed? I am not sure so that is why i am asking. Every other time I've seen it employed, the trade has been announced at the start of the window.
  13. QUOTE(ChiSox9 @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 09:00 AM) I am not sure if i buy it either but the deal may be potentially done but i am sure any team (Tigers, Sox or Angels) are not going to announce the deal or confirm the deal without solid negotiations with Soriano's agent to look into the potential of signing him long term. I would believe that it is difficult for any team to just get a solid 2 month rental player while giving up top prospects or ML players. If i were to give up someone like ESantana or BMac, i would be sure to negotiate the potential of retaining that players services for a few years. Isn't that what the "72 hour negotiating window" that we've seen teams get repeatedly to go along with trades is for? Especially given that the Tigers are facing the #2 team in the AL Central this weekend, and having to face 2 moderately good left handed pitchers (Liriano and Santana), I think they'd probably like to get him in the lineup sooner rather than later, if they were actually going to make that deal.
  14. QUOTE(ChiSox9 @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 08:40 AM) Olney reported this morning the the Tigers would be willing to give up right handed pitching prospect Humberto Sanchez for the deal for Soriano. I believe this is the player the nationals were holding out for to complete the deal. I'm not sure I buy this, because if it were true, I think the deal would already be done. Just as it would already be done if the Sox were willing to part with McCarthy, or the Angels with ESantana.
  15. QUOTE(Wedge @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 08:41 AM) What happens when our bullpen is expended and we can't hold any leads later in the season? Right now, our bullpen has a ton of talent in it, and it's still pitched the fewest innings in baseball. There's no reason our bullpen can't take on some degree of additional work. The oldest guy in our bullpen is 29 years old if I'm remembering correctly.
  16. The Israeli attack on the U.N. outpost lasted for about 6 hours, from the time the first shells fell. The moment the shells started falling, the U.N. people got on the phones and started begging the Israelis to stop. Calls went out to the Israeli mission at the U.N., and from U.N. Generals on the ground directly to the IDF begging the Israelis to stop shooting. The direct hits that killed the U.N. people happened after all of these pleas were ignored. The Israelis continued firing even after more U.N. forces went in to retrieve the bodies. The BBC has even more details. The UN forces in South Lebanon contacted the IDF at least 10 times once the shelling started, pleading with the Israelis to stop. I can't tell if they mean to include it in those 10 contacts or not, but a Senior Irish Soldier in the area also contacted the IDF 6 times. Each time, the IDF assured the U.N. they would stop attacking the site. After 6 hours of shelling, the site was hit directly with a precision guided missile.
  17. Harry Reid is yet another victim of Identity Theft. In response, Congress will make it easier for identity theft to happen in another attempt to cut costs for the credit industry. Congress says it only has about 200 million to go before it reaches its goal of having everyone in America be the victim of Identity Theft.
  18. QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 08:13 AM) Why doesn't JD bat 3 and Thome bat 5. I just don't get it. Thome last time I checked was #2 in the AL in runs scored. That's why. He gets on base like a crazy man with those walks he takes, and the decent batting average, and thus sets up RBI opportunities for the bombers behind him. You put him in the 5 spot, you have Crede and AJ hitting behind him. He'll have a few more chances to drive in runs because of Konerko's OBP, but He'll have a lot less chances to score runs because he won't have Konerko and Dye to drive him in.

    PC question

If your system restore disks are set up along the lines of the mess of a Gateway that I had to deal with as an undergrad, you should be able to format the drive and install all of the OS off of the disks, assuming the disks work right (as with almost everything else on that Gateway, the System Restore disks were bad also). If it doesn't work though, here's a tip; find a college student to talk to. Most colleges have deals with Microsoft where students can buy CD's of the OS for reasonable prices (At Indiana, it was $5. After the Gateway crapped 95% of the way out, I waited a month for XP to be released and just bought a new disk, that actually fixed most of my problems with that PC)
  21. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 08:57 PM) Hmm, this is something I brought up a few weeks ago, a possible swap of Fields for Linebrink. A little late but another source says that the two teams did have talks involving Josh Fields. http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/padre...26padnotes.html I don't think any of us should be surprised that it was discussed. In theory it would fit for both teams, but I think that the price on our side was too high. I think I'm happier with the righty reliever we wound up with.
  22. QUOTE(ChiSox9 @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 08:25 PM) Due to the loss the Brewers took today dropping them 5.5 games out of the Wild Card and 11.5 games out of 1st in their division. One could only assume that GM Doug Melvin will take a serious consideration to any trade offers on the table to release CLee. With that in mind, i am interested to see what takes place in regards to the value of Soriano in the OF market as i stated earlier. This makes the top three most wanted players in the trades all corner OF's. With Soriano being the only player without solid experience in the OF Supposedly, last I heard was that tomorrow was the day the Brewers were going to make their final decision on whether or not to dump Lee, try to sign him now, or hold him and take the draft picks. By the way, has anyone other than me noticed that Baltimore is pretty close to Washington D.C., and the White Sox are headed to Baltimore? We could even afford to pay for the gas to get Soriano to the ballpark on Friday.
  23. I still can't believe that every pitcher on our starting staff except for Jose Contreras could put up numbers THIS MUCH worse than their career numbers (And Contreras is still down from where he was at the end of last year/beginning of this year too). At some point, the numbers say these people have to turn it around.
  24. QUOTE(shoota @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 09:09 PM) Wouldn't piggy backing Vazquez on McCarthy's first 2-3 starts be a good solution to this problem? So what happens the next time Mark Buehrle gives up 8 runs in the first inning and has to be pulled?
