  1. How much of the answer to both of those has been "Health"?
  2. The trick is that you can't know that an infected person wasn't in there before you. Maybe it's not your coffee shop, but with 10,000+ infected people in the country, if every coffee shop had 5 people in it, someone in one of them would be infected. The virus has been shown to survive on surfaces for some time, minutes to days depending on the surface. So, one person in one coffee shop infects 3 or 4 people, they infect their families, they go to a coffee shop again 3 days later and now they contaminate a surface, and now you've got a cluster of 20 people infected and you probably kill someone.
  3. Because his contract this year is fully guaranteed and cutting him frees up $0. You could also do something with Newton's deal like making it a $10 m contract this year with a big roster bonus next spring, where it is clear that if he's good enough the contract will be torn up, and if he's not good enough they would cut him before the roster bonus making him a free agent.
  4. So um this. https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1239975682643357696.html 18 months of this.
  5. What's the point of a bailout then?
  6. Pennsylvania will close all their liquor stores.
  7. DNA evidence was run by the U of Washington before it shut down and verified that there were at least 2 distinct releases of separate virus lines in Washington State, most likely in mid-January. There was at least one other release in California separate from the Washington ones. Beyond that, there's probably been many more, including whatever strain was circulating in Italy where it has been as deadly as anywhere, but those are the ones we know about from the full evidence. There's almost certainly a good variety of strains circulating in the US, particularly after the infect as many people as possible experiments at the airports last weekend.
  8. So what, 500 people died today there from this?
  9. The Trump administration or the Associated Press?

  12. If I had to guess...in order to justify that, they have to have numbers from hospitals saying the surge has started.
  13. Full blown Shelter in Place order for the Bay Area CA. Takeout restaurants, grocery stores deemed essential functions that will remain open but that's it. 3 weeks.
  14. Yes, something like 50% of the cases are asymptomatic or nearly so, and they're not getting tested. But Italy has 25000 confirmed cases and is getting 400 bodies a day as a consequence. If people are telling me that Ohio alone has 4x that many cases, even with demographic changes, where are the thousand bodies a day from Ohio?
  15. The customs lines at the airports would strongly disagree.
  16. There were over 3000 people on that ship and they were all tested and quarantined. 700 or so tested positive.
  17. The statement by the person in ohio was not that they had 100s of thousands infected currently, it was a poorly phrased statement that they expect that eventually.
  18. I would say it is entirely plausible that you did have it, but unlikely.
  19. There is absolutely a way to know if ER admissions are reflecting hundreds of thousands of people being sick, because hospitals would run out of beds. Whether the rate of hospitalization is 10% or 15% doesn't matter - it's large and people who require hospitalization are there for weeks. If people are showing up and they're not severe cases, they're being sent home. You shouldn't be going to a hospital with flu-like symptoms, but this virus is killing elderly people by causing severe respiratory distress. In other words, people literally cannot breathe in the severe cases, and lungs giving up winds up being a major cause of death. You cannot just recover from not being able to breathe by having a bowl of chicken soup.
  20. Biologists are pretty excellent at piecing this stuff together, at least over our lifetimes where DNA equipment has been available.
