  1. Hey I had the copyright on Rick Hahn's decisions aren't Rick Hahn's Fault all the way back in 2015!
  2. If the White Sox need pitching next offseason that's a bad sign because of the amount we have...but I could still understand that too. But, if we can't close the deal here, how are things going to go when the Yankees need pitching?
  3. The problem is - literally none of the guys next year are this good of a fit. Both Rendon and Arenado are older. Neither has played in the AL full time. You have to worry about the Coors effect with Arenado.
  4. Baseball players also commonly have to spend approximately 1/2 of each game trying to catch the ball. They call it "defense".
  5. If the White Sox weren't also trying to make sure they don't overpay, then this would already be done.
  6. 095ef921-c9e7-4192-8a7c-fba28f1bfd70 is the most sensible thing anyone has written in this thread yet.
  7. Not with the Jay and Alonso moves. You don't spend $13 million and help out your division rival to stay under the radar. Jay in particular is a rotten fit alongside Harper since Harper and Eloy are both pretty weak defenders, Jay in CF in that arrangement creates a terrible defensive OF.
  8. So we are worried he'll literally be Bryce Harper?
  9. Of course, the owners coulda just not colluded, but naw that's not an option, they had to teach the ________ a lesson.
  10. The White Sox can't legally know what the Padres are bringing to the table. If Machado's agent says they have a $280 million offer, the White Sox might believe that's just the agent posturing and that the player doesn't have offers anywhere near that. They stick to their lower offer and in the end the player goes elsewhere. That's one plausible scenario where the front office could miss this player, by misunderstanding the market.
  11. If that got the deal done why wouldnt the white sox do it?

Personal income tax receipts in New York State have increased every year since 2010. From FY 2017 to 2018 they increased by $4 billion.
  13. I will agree that the person operating the scoreboard has had very little to do with this franchise having the worst record in baseball over the last 6 years so there's probably very little reason to judge that person's work based on the team's performance.
  14. One other way to create happy employees is for the employees to have no fear for their 6 and 7 figure jobs even if they're really bad at them.

I don't think there's anything paradoxical about this. New York, DC have huge advantages - strong transit systems, easy access to huge quantities of talented workers, high education rates. If they added 25,000 employees there, that's good for them, but that also taxes the resources in those areas heavily. The fact that it is one of THE few true cities in the country is already the draw for those areas. They shouldn't be needing to offer up huge tax incentives, if the company wants to be there it's not for the tax incentive it's for the benefits of the city. A smaller city that could use the growth, that isn't going to grow on its own and could use the notoriety, and could also use those workers to help develop a highly educated work force that builds an industry to support the whole city - that's a place that does make sense to offer some money up.

In the end, clearly they decided that the population of NYC/DC and access to the governments and facilities in those areas was more important than any of these other things, which is a great reason why those cities shouldn't be putting in extra money to lure them. They even said in their announcement they'd still be expanding in NYC.
  17. I believe he has broken the story that Manny Machado occasionally wears clothes.
  18. Took a few days for the physical and stuff after the agreement, so the 19th not the 26th. That was the Monday of the week spring training started for everyone, so the equivalent date this year would be next Monday, Feb. 18.
  19. They've already spent what, $15 million this year on Colome and Herrera? Honestly I probably woulda preferred Kimbrel to that...but can't undo those deals.
  20. And now you've created a setup that can leave negotiations at a stalemate for a month and a half.
  21. Honestly, I think if either of those deals were on the table right now this would be done.
  22. I would never use or interpret the term ceiling that way. When someone says "Ceiling" to me they're referring to the highest point the person can reach possibly, not some percentile. If I throw something at my wall, it will hit above a certain level 20% of the time, but it will bounce off the ceiling and head back down. If we're redefining ceiling to mean something other than their absolute peak, then we need a term like "Roof" to refer to "The person's absolute possible best". That's one of the things we care about. Jacob DeGrom may never put up an 8 WAR season again, but "8 WAR" is a helluva thing to reach once.
  23. Whether he reaches it is not the question if you're talking about ceiling. Is there some reason to think Kopech cannot stay healthy for 3 straight years? Is there some reason to think that he cannot come back from TJS to where he was beforehand? He may have the potential to have some issues down the road with further injuries, but that does not affect his ceiling.
