  1. Someone pointed out in the other thread that Shields also has a $2 million buyout the Padres are covering, and that $2 million would not go with either. I'd agree Shields is probably on waivers today, if any team claimed him they'd be claiming closer to $9 million for that 2 months.
  2. For a contrast with the stuff above, the ESPN power rankings early have the Bulls in at 25th (they finished 25th overall last season) and an NBA.com one has the Bulls 12th in the Eastern Conference. The blog I linked has Boston, Philly, Torotno, Milwaukee, Indy, and Washington as the top 6 in the EC, but then kinda leaves 7 and 8 as a jumble where the Bulls could slot in. I gotta admit it's hard to see the Bulls being better than those teams (barring injury to Wall or Oladipo or something like that).
  3. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/ct-yoan-moncada-disabled-list-thumb-20170517-story.html# its' actually remarkable how every single thing you say applies to Moncada the year before. I'm seriously getting impressed.
  4. If this is the clear right path, then how much did we cost ourselves by bringing Moncada and others up last year....and how many times do we have to overlook mistakes from the same people?
  5. Except with Moncada and all the other guys called up last season.
  6. He threw the hardest pitch he's thrown since he was a rookie a couple weeks back. He was facing (checks records...) the Chicago White Sox in that game.
  7. The fact that Collins wasn't randomly up in the big leagues in the middle of 2017 is a huge difference from the Fulmer situation.
  8. Well that does make him something of an expert in clubhouses where the managers don't have any control.
  9. Extra rest won't hurt Chris anyway....just hope he doesn't stay on there for too long because once again Kluber isn't all that far behind him in the Cy Young race, and Kluber usually comes on at the end while Chris falls back.
  10. I think there probably was talk of him being a plus LF and a replacement for Cutch, and that might have gotten put together as him being a CF?
  11. I don't ever remember hearing of Meadows as a plus CF, my memory is of them thinking he would take over Marte's LF spot and Marte would take over CF once McCutchen departed.
  12. Literally no on on Earth is going to claim James Shields and take on the $7 million currently remaining. He will pass through waivers with ease, and eventually the White Sox will trade him and the team getting him will pay something like a million dollars with the White Sox picking up the rest.
  13. The Pirates pitching coach is also extremely well regarded around the league. It could be a case where what he does was not working for Glasnow, we've seen people like that with Cooper before, but they are typically really good at getting pitchers to come around when they have some talent.
  14. A substantial portion of medical research is already done on a not for profit basis through medical labs and institutes that are funded by the government. Meanwhile, a substantial amount of pharmaceutical research done by the private sector is done in such a way that it is useless in the sense of furthering health ends - rather than improving health care quality it is done to get around patent regulations and to allow companies to continue charging higher costs for drugs that are no longer generic. An alternative system where much of research is government funded would almost certainly be far more efficient, and frankly you could most likely dramatically increase pharmaceutical research funds just by cutting back on the expenditures on pharmaceutical advertising. Furthermore, we also have other mechanisms of funding research that are known to work - innovation prizes could be established and government funded, allowing private labs to take stabs at those topics without having to worry about the lab putting the product out on the market for a thousand dollars a pill as we see happening now when major new drugs are developed.
  15. The fact that there's no deadline for players like him also means that teams aren't going to be in a rush to acquire him today, so unless the White Sox are desperate to move him out of the way to give his starts to another player (cough), teams on both sides will probably just wait a short while.
  16. If a team actually claimed him off waivers in August, they would be liable for the remaining ~$6-7 million with no offset. What will actually happen is that he will clear waivers and therefore he will be tradeable all the way up until the end of the season. He will be traded, with a team probably taking on $1 million or so, at or near the end of August, such that he'd be eligible for a postseason roster.
  17. I don't think anyone would give a semi-interesting A Baller for Shields. Maybe if the White Sox picked up the entire remaining contract that would be workable, but are the M's really that desperate for an extra $3 million?
  18. Moncada is under team control through 2023.
  19. If Rodon can stay on this roll for the next season, and we decide then that he doesn't fit the window, then we're talking about having the most valuable asset on the trade market next season by a long shot.
  20. So the White Sox should take advantage of loopholes always with the exception of times when they don't, because 200 plate appearances outweigh those loopholes. Like I said, your explanation is nonsense. If they're going to push this so far with the guy demolishing the minor leagues just to get the extra year of control, the loophole you say they should have taken advantage of, they should absolutely have taken advantage of that loophole for the guy with an OPS of .825 in AAA mid-season. You're doing a great job of illustrating how silly it is to take advantage of the loophole here when they didn't earlier.
  21. In those 370 plate appearances above A ball, Eloy has an OPS of 1.000. Moncada comes out to around .850 above A-ball in 568 plate appearances I could easily tell you which of those 2 I think deserved an earlier callup from those numbers. One of them is pretty weak for earning a callup, one of them is destroying things.
