  1. It says an awful lot that this is even an idea someone had.
  2. I don't think there's any team that would pay the price for that #1 pick. None of the QB needing teams would pay to jump up that high, not when there are 4 reasonably good options + Jackson in the late first all on the board.
  3. Yes because you're far more likely to wind up having someone in your own family shot by you or shot accidentally or dead by suicide than you are to defend yourself against the fantasy intruder like people want to believe will heroically happen. More privately owned guns is strongly correlated with more gun deaths and this is one where you can establish causation - you watch how the states change as they make their laws less restrictive, and you watch the death rate go up. It's a "I feel powerful and safe" fantasy that you're deluding yourself into by owning one.
  4. "By failing to offer a clear alternative...." "Here's a rant on police violence, private prisons, corruption, and living wage, within the space of about 12 words, superimposed upon a pill bottle because that's where I get sent to prison, inside a living wage pill bottle. Everyone will clearly understand these cogent points".
  5. I still think there's plenty of room for a top flight reliever.
  6. If they are not a playoff team in 2020 then Rick Hahn's job should at least be in jeopardy. There's some reasons to make exceptions (whole lot of freak injuries?), but if this team is not a 2020 playoff team, with the talent currently in this organization and the low salary commitments, then the organization completely blew it with their player evaluations and development. Badly.
  7. Yeah, they didn't take the next step. They only got to the 10th inning of game 7 of the world series in a game that wound up 1-0 without Maddux.
  8. I would have said "do it" before the injury. I would not now.
  9. I'm not sure if BABIP going up is enough to do it, and yes his slugging is high because of 1 game, but right now we're still talking about a guy who has an .800 OPS and a .250 BABIP. IF that latter number moves back up towards .300 with plate appearances...and he can do that without the power numbers dropping, that's not a bad set of DH numbers. An .850 OPS for the DH slot from a cheap player would, IMO, be ideal. He's not there yet, but he's close enough that I'm still tantalized.
  10. Who are we developing on the mound? Let's see: Lucas Giolito (recent top 10 MLB prospect) Reynaldo Lopez Carson Fulmer (recent top 10 draft pick) Carlos Rodon (recent top 5 draft pick) Michael Kopech (the most beautiful man on Earth) That's a lot of pitching to develop right there.
  11. The trick right now is the superteams. If you're a 75 win team and you're staring up at the Cleveland Indians winning 100 games, getting yourself to 85 wins does no good. You can't convince yourself you can win the division by luck and you can't convince yourself you have a chance as a wild card. Heck, the 2nd wild card has actually hurt things in this regard, you spend a lot to win the wild card, then you go home after 1 game.
  12. Have you noticed how there's not one single data point about how its bad, just a number of slogans about how it would make you feel like work was diminished? If that's the best kind of arguments that are made against something then I'll go ahead and be for it because the case against it is embarrassingly pathetic.
  13. I think this is a conscious decision that he's trying to work on repeating his delivery as much as possible and sacrificing a bit of velocity to do that. Once he gets a repetitive groove in his delivery that he's comfortable with then hopefully he can push the effort back upwards more. In the game thread last weekend there was someone saying they heard specifically that this was what he was working on, and it makes sense.
  14. I still say we have a legit shot at this being a playoff team next year. We need to make a couple good FA decisions and have 1-2 things go right in the starting rotation (no more Rodon injuries) to have a shot, but with normal development of these guys, it's not farfetched. If we're no where close, then that's because we are still doing a poor job of talent evaluation and development.
  15. And apparently Welington Castillo is pretty darn good too at exit velocity right now too.
  16. We should be up there with a competitive offer, perhaps for both of them. They put themselves in a position where making that type of offer is the right move for the franchise. However, this franchise may just flat out be too scared to make the offer even if it's the right move for them.
  17. Some lefthander for Boston named Chris (didn't he have a jersey problem at one point?) Paul Goldschmidt Madison Bumgarner Nolan Arenado Anthony Rendon Cole Hamels Sonny Gray Dellin Betances Justin Smoak Xander Bogerts Jake Odorizzi Jose Abreu At least as of now, looks particularly good year for starting pitching availability.
  18. I'd be surprised if Machado is that low, especially with how he has started this season, so rock and roll on BH.
  19. As of right now I don't see much value in any of those guys. If Jones is healthy come July I do think he'll be moved, but his injury history is going to mean that you're not getting a huge package for him even if he's performing great. If Jones is healthy come July you have to move him, because he's going to get hurt again at some point and there's no reason for us to take that gamble. Soria...well so far he hasn't shown enough to be worth anything. Avi looks 2016 bad again, so blah if he's this guy even for a few more weeks then he's useless in a trade, he had to be hammering the ball non stop again this year to be worth anything. Abreu...well he's still mashing the ball, he'd have some trade value, but it still seems like we're in the "more valuable to us than what we'd get in a trade for him" mode, especially with the weak numbers we saw sluggers getting on last year's free agent market. So Jones will either be moved or will be on the DL, Soria will probably be moved but that will bring back scraps, Abreu they'll listen but not get offers good enough to move him, and Avi right now looks worthless.
  20. With this software, just copy the link to the tweet into the post box, and I've seen it require you to hit the space bar or start typing, and the software should load the tweet embed automatically.
  21. Ok, so right now, given the choice, Machado at $350 or Harper at $425, which do you prefer? Feel free to say that you think my number guesses are off.
  22. So yeah I'll admit I just had to look up what a Franchy Cordero was.
  23. Avi Garcia was a 4.2 WAR player last year. So far he's making that look like a fluke, but he was legitimately that guy last year. If we were somehow happy with Garcia and Sanchez and Anderson, then the money could go to loading up on the relievers (Kimbrel would make that bullpen look an awful lot better).
