QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jun 24, 2016 -> 01:31 PM) I know a friend of mine already mentioned ESA doesn't get impacted by this as it technically isn't part of the EU. Not sure about other scientific agencies. And that isn't to say Britain still doesn't pull funding but it's not an immediate pull out at least. It's not an immediate pullout, but grant funding is typically done in 3-ish year projects. So if you're applying for a grant this year as a British scientist and 2 years from now the British will have pulled out completely, who pays for the 3rd year? Can you even apply at all? Will the EU just decide not to fund proposals from British scientists this year (that's what I'd do if I were on that review panel because the project couldn't be completed). Can you accept a student on a 3-4 year ph.d. project if you're a scientist in france and they're from the UK?
-
I might be the only one connected to any scientists in Europe here, so I'll add that scientists around Europe are totally freaking out right now. Science funding in Europe has been done by EU grants that the British were a major contributor to - a small slice of the money being sent out went to fund science in Europe, The European Space Agency, etc. Then, much of that money came back in the form of grants that British scientists could apply for or projects they could participate in (there's only 1 CERN). If the British aren't going to contribute to that portion of the fund, then that means multi-year research grants are going to be majorly hurt both in the UK and the rest of Europe until at least they work through the multi-year boondoggle it has now created. Furthermore, students who are working on college degrees have been freely moving between universities using EU funding for decades and they're potentially going to get caught. So either for the next few years, the rest of Europe has to stop funding British grant proposals and stop accepting British students until an agreement is figured out (you can't start funding a project if you know the funding won't last 3 years or the student won't be able to stay there for 4) or there are going to be a lot of students stranded half way through their majors when the money paying for them to be on the continent vanishes at some future date. The British will then have to set up their own peer review system for funding proposals independent of the EU, and if the money was actually directed to the NHS (it won't be) they'd also have to come up with another funding source for that. So basically, for anyone currently at university or potentially at university in the next few years in the UK or the EU, this is a complete disaster. It will hurt people for 5+ years until new systems are figured out.

Also, while catching up on this thread, I found it interesting to see how little comments there were on the Bulls' actual draft pick.

QUOTE (shipps @ Jun 24, 2016 -> 12:08 PM) Yeah. If you could have traded Taj for a guy like Brice Johnson who went 26 I think, that would have been considered as a win in my book. Bulls need to get younger and bank on potential. Not hold onto older players that have shown what they already are..... and that being not good enough. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 24, 2016 -> 12:08 PM) There is absolutely no reason why Taj Gibson should be on the Bulls to start the season. Portis and Mirotic need those minutes, he's in his early thirties, and is a free agent after the season. By all means though, keep him and try to get the 7th seed in the East. I have no issue with trading Taj given his contract status, but if all you're getting for him is a 2nd rounder then you better be needing his cap space to sign Durant. Worth noting that Mirotic's contract ends next offseason also though?

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 23, 2016 -> 01:37 PM) Do you think the Bulls would risk losing a trade to Thibs? If that were part of their decision making it would say a lot about how management values personal issues with people compared to winning.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 23, 2016 -> 10:19 AM) Dont know why, but Arrietta just isnt efficient like he was last year. but like Brian said, he is still nasty AF. He just gets wild According to the Fangraphs strike zone stats, he's actually throwing strikes at a comparable rate to last year, but batters are swinging at stuff out of the zone notably less than the last several years. This could be a deliberate game plan on their part - can't hit him so force him to work, or it could be that he's throwing things that are more obviously out of the zone when a pitch does get away from him.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jun 22, 2016 -> 04:28 PM) Wait, maybe I don't understand. You said 1/3 of the time they fail to sacrifice before there are 2 strikes on the batter then said 1/3 of the time the out is given away without accomplishing anything. Ok so now there are 2 strikes on the batter and he doesn't bunt right ? So you are saying that every time the bunt is not successful every batter has made an out that doesn't advance the runner ? No one got a hit with 2 strikes ? No one hit into a DP with 2 strikes ? You're right, a small percentage of the "failed to get the bunt down" at bats probably do turn into productive outs/hits, but those also include times when the bunt was unsuccessful and resulted in a popup/foulout/otherwise out without advancing the runner.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 22, 2016 -> 04:30 PM) He does have a point. None of the players the Bulls received make you want to watch a game. Well, WGN stopped carrying their games and on the occasion they get a national game it's typically against a better opponent or Christmas, so it's not the easiest thing to do outside the city any more anyway.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 22, 2016 -> 04:19 PM) Something also tells me that his recent complacent/lackadaisical style that was on full display last year is closer to what you are gonna get from Rose, as opposed to the cold blooded killer we saw in the first four years. Im disappointed in the bulls, but this is the beginning of ripping the band aid off Good metaphor.

Oh and taking on Lopez's contract while trading Butler would also be very confusing to me.
-
QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jun 22, 2016 -> 04:09 PM) I mean I think it's well known Butler is available for the right deal. I think the Bulls hold the cards there though. They don't have to do anything. Chad Ford had a tweet a bit ago that basically said every 1st round pick after 2 is for sale. Apparently this draft is going to be a s***ty one? There might be some really good players after 1-2 but no one knows who they are.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 22, 2016 -> 03:19 PM) Melky is a pretty good bunter. I believe he has close to 50 sacs in his career, even the year he was roided up hitting .340 he sacd a couple of times. He tends to go rogue and do it on his own, but the one in NY was called from the bench. The second time Melky bunted it was on his own. Melky is actually an above average bunter. He gets the bunt down 75% of the time he squares around during an at bat. That's significantly above the league average...and still not particularly good. In his career, Cabrera is a .284 hitter and in situations where a productive out is possible, he gets a productive out 38% of the time. Therefore, Cabrera bunting will get a guy to 2nd base 75% of the time, whereas swinging away he'll at least get the guy to 2nd base 66% of the time, but in the 2nd case about 40% of those successful times he will get a hit that could get the guy to 3rd base or home. That also doesn't count walks, and if a guy is squaring around to give up the out I'm betting that influences the pitcher's walk rate as well.

QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jun 22, 2016 -> 03:48 PM) 2 months into the season when Rose is battling some lingering ankle issue, missing 5 games here, 8 games there, I think we're all going to be ok with this trade. Bulls aren't winning the championship, so if this is the first of many trades to rebuild, i'm 100% ok with it. taking on this much salary for role players long-term doesn't seem like a solid move as "the first of many trades to rebuild". If they land Durant then suddenly this would make a ton of sense, role players and depth alongside Butler and Durant. But unless that happens? It's non cheap role players alongside Butler.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 22, 2016 -> 03:38 PM) Does this free up cap space or something? I think the Bulls actually took on about $1 million in payroll for next year, plus additional funds beyond next year.
-
Is it worth noting again that the White Sox are only right now successful on 64% of their bunt attempts (which is right at the league average)? 1/3 of the times guys try to bunt, they fail to successfully sacrifice before there are 2 strikes on the batter, on average. Some guys are better than that, but some guys are also much worse. So about 1/3 of the time the bunt is called for, the out is given away without accomplishing anything. For comparison, in the runner on first, 1 out or less case, the White Sox hit into a DP 11% of the time.

June 22nd Game Thread: White Sox @ Red Sox 6:10 CT
Balta1701 replied to GGajewski18's topic in 2016 Season in Review
I had heard nothing of Eduardo Rodriguez, googled him, and the first sponsored link included Curt Schilling insisting that Rodriguez is not tipping pitches. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 21, 2016 -> 05:45 PM) The Red Sox have just under $40 million of payroll going to players who are no longer on their active roster. http://nypost.com/2016/06/21/red-soxs-bill...-climbs-to-39m/ I'm wondering which franchise is paying the most to players who aren't on any MLB roster. The Red Sox have to be up there with Crawford, anyone else?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 19, 2016 -> 08:49 PM) I JOHNSON is horrible. ERA over 10 in SD. The Sox won 8 of Latos 11 starts.ok for 3 million. Juno is starting to show what he is. And he is older than all of the others. I agree with the comments on EJ. Johnson is not a solution right now for a team that has even the most remote thought of contending. He's a guy that a fully rebuilding team throws out there in the hopes that he can become something in a couple years. If he has to be fully cut loose, then there is no major loss because it won't change the team's status this year. That describes the Padres position accurately.

Ticketmaster free tickets from class action lawsuit
Balta1701 replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in SLaM
QUOTE (Brian @ Jun 19, 2016 -> 02:54 PM) I know I used ticketmaster a few times but I get nothing? I'm suing. Not any more. They've now adopted "mandatory arbitration" so if they want to rip you off unless you can afford an individual attorney your other choice is to not buy tickets to stuff. -
June 19th Game Thread: ChiSox at Cleveland
Balta1701 replied to InTheDriversSeat's topic in 2016 Season in Review
QUOTE (Condor13 @ Jun 19, 2016 -> 05:12 PM) I had to leave before the bottom of the 10th and missed the s*** show. My first thought is......Why in the hell is RV bringing in the closer in extra innings when we are the away team. If we had gotten the lead in the 13th who the hell was gonna pitch purke, ynoa? Not to mention D Rob has been serviceable as a closer but absolutely horrible as a pitcher in a non save situation. So why in the f*** is he in the game? RV is totally lost out there, so is Poop and Steverson. I expect RV to be gone by tomorrows game. This loss is on the offense and RV Who else was left in the bullpen likely to be effective after 1.2 innings from yestserday's starter? -
QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 19, 2016 -> 04:09 PM) I would say skipping his start at the next chance (when there is an off day) is the most logical thing. Time in the bullpen could make some sense, but it's tough to control when he gets to pitch (how do you predict the next blowout?) and you can't risk him in a competitive game. You can only DL him if there is something resembling an injury going on. We've seen enough pitchers go to the DL with "tired arms/shoulder soreness" that I think they could probably get him through unless he absolutely refused, and if he's absolutely refusing things suggested by the organization while still getting shelled like this then there are much bigger problems.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 19, 2016 -> 03:52 PM) I guess at some point then you have to put him in the bullpen and pitch him when the Sox are down, 8-1 or something. It's dangerous to keep trotting him out there with MLB hitters scorching his offerings. My first try would be to skip his start on Thursday and try to give him a few days to get his head together somehow. No I have no idea who would actually pitch that day, but after this 4 game stretch I'd say at least try something to shake him out of this. With the money the franchise committed to him, you've got to keep trying to start him - if you moved him to the pen it's like a 1 week demotion at best. Skip a start, give him some extra time, and if he still is falling apart then say he's throwing from a tired arm and try to get him onto the DL until the all star break?
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 19, 2016 -> 03:19 AM) This may sound dumb but will Shields retire if he has another ridiculous start or two? I mean cmon. He's WAY worse than Danks. He's actually worse than Latos. Will he retire? It's not out of the realm of possibility he's done. The amount of money he makes is kind of inconsequential right now. I mean he can't get anybody out in the big leagues. Would he agree to a month-long minor league rest/rehab? I want him the hell off the MLB roster. In his career, James Shields has made $49 million. He has over $50 million remaining on his contract that he would lose if he retired. His career earnings will double in the next 2.5 years. He will make you buy his deal out to get him off your roster and it's the right move. If you want him off your roster, you either get him onto the DL or you pay the rest.
-
So seriously what do you do now? You can't just run him out there this week right? You've got to at least give him some extra time off or try something different.
-
So seriously they have to just DL Shields after this one right? They can't just run him out there again later this week right now.
