Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
NCsoxfan replied to GGajewski18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Buehrlesque @ Dec 28, 2016 -> 10:39 AM) I think a lot of people are severely overestimating the amount of time this team will be bad, and how they will be losing intentionally. 2017 will be mostly garbage, no doubt. But really, that's about it. This isn't the kind of rebuild where a moribund, barren franchise begins from zero, accumulating teenagers through draft picks. Thanks to their roster of great players with great contracts (that paradoxically did not produce a great team), the Sox are acquiring close to major league ready, impact talent. Things will change much more quickly than some people seem to think. Especially in the two-Wildcard era, this team will be competing by 2019 for sure, possibly even 2018. I agree, but then I think "What makes me think that losing Sale, Eaton, Quintana, and others will yield a better team?" These prospects and replacements not only have to equal the players lost, but exceed them as well. The proverbial one step backwards for two steps forward is great, but the one step backwards is still a big one. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 27, 2016 -> 04:07 PM) That really isn't surprising at all. Never say never. Maybe Q isn't dealt until the deadline, Bregman has a slow start, and the Stros pitching need becomes glaring. Moncada was untouchable at last deadline as well -

Me thinks Hahn/Cashman are using Twitter/National Writers as a way to stir the pot and/or put pressure on other teams. All of this stuff is intentional. -

QUOTE (PolishPrince34 @ Dec 27, 2016 -> 09:47 AM) This is a head scratcher for me. Why are the Yankees interested in Robertson? They are in a semi rebuild and were applauded by the entire industry with the influx of young talent they have brought to their organization. I find it hard to believe Cashman wants to get rid of his young talented hitters: Torres, Rutherford, and Frazier. The only conclusion I can come up with is Steinbrenner pressuring Cashman to make a big acquisition for 2017 season. It's really not. The Yankees might not want to contend THIS year, but 4 years of Q helps them contend in years 2-4. Remember, they have big salary coming off the books soon, and will likely be in position to land a huge FA next winter. -

QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Dec 26, 2016 -> 05:07 PM) Its worth taking a bit less of a price than TOTAL FLEECING and just dealing Quintana now to avoid being burned by the ever-present threats (even in the case of Mr Consistent himself) of ineffectiveness or injury. Could you imagine if Q busts his shoulder in May for a terrible Sox team and getting basically nothing in return for him? This isn't an argument to give him away, but it is an argument to be a little more flexible on the asking price. What makes you think Hahn isn't being reasonable? There's zero reason to think this given the deals already made. -

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 12:35 PM) Happ and Eloy would definitely be what the White Sox are looking for in a deal. I'd welcome the Cubs to the trade mix. Cubs would be disgusting if they got Q. -

I am going to be pretty upset if we trade all of our top trade pieces and end up with only 1 positional player (Moncada). Not very keen to have a package centered around Glasnow. -

QUOTE (peppers312 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 10:47 AM) PIT seems to making a legit push. does anyone think the Bucs would part with 2 of the 3 for Quintana? Glasnow Meadows Bell Probably at least one of Meadows/Glasnow and one of Bell/Newman plus two lower level guys. -

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 10:33 AM) This thread is gigantic. Maybe it'll even pass the Cespedes one from last year in terms of size. Yes, but it's kind of been a "catch all" thread in the aftermath of the Sale/Eaton deals. -

Friend is a diehard Pirates fan and said this about Glasnow: "he struggled a bit in the majors, velocity was down, and seemed unable/unwilling to throw changeups even in the minors. I wonder if they're ready to move on from him" That being said, he barely pitched in the majors, right? -

QUOTE (FT35 @ Dec 20, 2016 -> 01:29 PM) The Yankees finished in 4th place at 84-78 last year...9 games back of Boston--who just got a lot better with the Sale trade. It's just puzzling to think they would see themselves as ready to contend enough to mortgage their farm to acquire Quintana right now. Houston finished with the same 84-78 record and they were 11 games back. A guy like Quintana could make either of these 2 teams a potential 90-win team, but both would have a lot of other work to do to somehow catch the clubs in front of them who are more than just a little better than them! My sales pitch would be this...No...Quintana might not be the player who vaults either one of those teams to 1st place...but he would close at least half that gap by himself and his low salary would enable them to still go out and close it more with others. One would think they would need to do that before the season started because every win will matter for the Yankees and Astros chances of winning their division...however, the talks going on now may be more realistically laying the groundwork for a July 31st deal--just to see where they are then. Yankees probably don't intend on a very long rebuild, and likely intend on contending more seriously in '18 & on, so it's not just about 2017. There's a LOT of value to them in 4 years of Q. They could be planning to sign Machado/Harper/etc and would want to save $ elsewhere on someone like Q. -

QUOTE (ozzfest @ Dec 20, 2016 -> 11:46 AM) I'm starting to think this rebuild is BS. They are just trading the guys that KW didn't get along with (Sale and Eaton) and Robertson (i dont believe Robertson had an issue w management, but i still think they will trade him). This is classic Reinsdorf. Nothing new. More of the same. They aren't going to trade Quintana, Frazier, Melky, Abreu etc... They are branding this as a rebuild so that fans get sucked in. But this is not a change in organizational philosophy. This is just Reinsdorf allowing his life tenured executive(s) to get rid of players they don't get along with. Once you see our record next year, you'll believe we're rebuilding -
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Dec 20, 2016 -> 11:53 AM) OK Dombrowski, time to help the White Sox out by throwing a rumored interest in Q out there to drive the price up on the Yanks and Astros. I do wonder if Boston would seriously consider a trade for Q. They are set up to win now, stocked farm and Dombrowski is not afraid to deal prospects. I don't see it. Sale/Price/Porcello/Pomeranz is a pretty good top 4, and arguably in the playoffs that's all you really need starter's wise. He's not going to pillage his farm system even more for the rotation IMO.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go

QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Dec 19, 2016 -> 12:31 PM) You don't spend the money they spent on Chapman if you aren't planning to contend. The Yankees' rotation is a mess. Whether they have the pieces to make a deal work depends on how they feel about Gregorious/Castro as their middle infield. If they think one of those guys is fine, then one of Torres/Mateo is expendable. Have to think they'd be open to moving Rutherford since he's a couple years away. So one of Torres/Mateo + Rutherford + is a workable framework. And all else being equal, that framework works way better than Martes + Tucker + for me. Dude, Torres is a few years away too. He just hit .250 in high single A ball for the Yanks. He's not close to ML ready. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Of course he's expendable if they're planning to compete sooner rather than later. -

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 19, 2016 -> 12:23 PM) This is exactly what we needed, a second team to serve as a perceived threat to the Astros. I still don't buy the Yankees giving up what it would take to get Quintana, but perhaps they feel like they have enough positional prospect depth to move a couple guys for a legit TOR starter and then use their financial means to plug any remaining holes in their everyday lineup. Regardless, anything that puts pressure on the Astros is a good thing. Cashman is used to competing. Not sure how content he would be with a slow rebuild allowing prospects to develop. A more Yankees mentality would be to get someone young, good, & cheap ala Quintana. Maybe we throw in Frazier as they're looking for 3B help. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 18, 2016 -> 11:13 PM) I still cannot believe that Houston would do everything else they've done this offseason, watch Boston get Sale, and then say "we've done enough" when a pitcher like Quintana is sitting there waiting for them and their rotation is that questionable. Assuming Houston's FO is rational & realizes they need top line pitching makes sense in theory, but not always in practice. Maybe they're expecting every pitcher to have a career year (dumb), or are being penny wise & pound foolish with prospects. Maybe they'll try to get Q cheap in the offseason, and wait until mid year to see how things go before making a big offer.
