QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 03:16 PM) Why must you do that? I think we have established by now that for the most part I'll use proper grammar but at times there will be a serious slip up and I'll do something stupid like that. If really want to find something wrong with my posts, just about every one contains a comma splice. eye dnt lyke wen U yuse unpropor grammer. It mkes mi mad.

"The" Griffey Rumor
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 02:30 PM) His contract might cost more than what the columnists have mentioned: http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005_01_2...ts_archive.html KGJ: $116.5M/9 (00-08), $16.5M/09 opt ($4M buyout) 00-08:$12.5M/yr, deferred $$$: 00 $5.5M, 01-08: $6.5M The Reds haven't paid a dime of the deferred $$$ so the full $57.5M remains in the balance. That begins earning 4% tail end of 2008. The last payment of which is due by 2024 ($16.5M). That means $41M is owed from 2009-2023. The financial terms state specifically that $57.5M is deferred & will begin earning 4% interest after the WS in 2008. I believe that means a team claiming him off waivers would have been on the hook for all of it. So there's really $81M left to pay on that contract. I think the media has been assuming that the Reds would pick up $33M of it but from what I've read the contract isn't structured to where they are under any obligation to do so if KGJ is traded. LOL Juggs, rising above and beyond the bulls*** to present more numbers.

"The" Griffey Rumor
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 01:55 PM) 3)Hawk needs to retire. He also needs to apologize for his statements on Mariotti yesterday. That's stirring the pot. The article Mariotti wrote had nothing to do with Hawk whatsoever and several other columnists and media outlets felt the same way as Mariotti, but I didn't see Hawk rip them. It's not stirring the pot, it's calling it like it is which apparently most people at Soxtalk hate to hear. Thats flat out ridiculous nite. When is the last time you heard Mariotti apologize for ripping on anyone. I doubt Hawk would stoop to apologizing to someone for ripping on him, who is doing the same thing through print.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 01:28 PM) I was gonna put that in there two but thought the post would be too long winded with it. Long-winded and Peter Gammons pretty much go hand in hand

"The" Griffey Rumor
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 01:21 PM) I'm waiting for the Steve Phillips chat where he says that the trade has already gone through and are just waiting to announce the trade to the media. And at the same time the Peter Gammons chat which says all talks between the White Sox and Reds have broken off and that there will not be a trade. you forgot to add "And Gammons then reports that the Red Sox are now interested in acquiring Griffey as insurance, and Griffey never had a problem playing in Boston. 2 AA prospects probably will get it done."

Skip Griffey
QUOTE(RDriesen @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 01:00 PM) you also cant over look what adding a guy like griffey would do for: A. the mentality of the team. you know it would pump them up and show them that management believes in them and wants to win. i think it would be a huge boost B. what he will do for the batters around him. you will see an improvement in their play imo. right now, griffey is just locked in. hes looking balls into the catcher, he is seeing the ball great. and his bat speed is getting back to what it used to be. hes ripped 2 opp field lasers for home runs in the last 2 games quit saying stuff like this! My emotions can only take so much!

What About Mike Sweeney?
QUOTE(dmbjeff @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 12:24 PM) I hate this,"because they are in the same division crap". The KC Royals have no chance of competing on the same level as the rest of major league baseball unless they trade sweeney. The Pirates traded with the Cubs twice now in deadline deals in 03 and now in 05, so its not something that is uncommon. the old "Pittsburgh did it, why cant we?" reasoning. Pittsburghs GM is a total dips***, thats why. Pittsburgh has been consistently fleeced by Hendry, thats why. Because the Royals and Sox havent had a trade between them since the late 80's thats why. Because Sweeney is the face of their franchise, and trading him to the division leaders would be bad PR, thats why. You dont give a team in your division a leg up, just because they want it.

WSCR's continued fall
QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 12:37 PM) First of all, Mac, Jurko, and Harry rock. Second, how can the Score expect Hood to honor a 3-month no-compete clause if they canned him. I doubt that is accurate. Doubt it if you want steve, when i worked in radio we had to sign no-compete clauses. It is common. And J Hood didnt get canned, his contract ran out, huge difference. No-compete clauses are designed so hosts dont intentionally get canned and run to other stations immediately, and draw huge shock value ratings.

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 12:07 PM) Even if we brought up some of the young outfielders Ozzie would keep them on the bench and start Timo. So what's the point of bringing them up? If you are referring to last night, its because brian anderson didnt join the team until 3 Pm yesterday. He didnt want the kid to play after traveling all day.

WSCR's continued fall
QUOTE(WSNS-TV44 @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 11:59 AM) I've listen, and it's the same thing 1.Cubs 2.T.O. and his problems 3.The NBA (even in the offseason) I'm lucky if I hear anything positive on the Sox. You must be listening to 5 minute sportscenter updates then. Silvy and Carmen usually start the morning off on the White Sox, and Mac jurko and Harry pick it up after Dan Patrick is through.

QUOTE(WSNS-TV44 @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 10:50 AM) I don't deal in Sports talk radio, ever. It's the Sox,and that's all.Unless AM radio starts playing rock and roll like in the '60's and 70's,the Sox is all I need on AM radio! you are missing out. I have really grown to appreciate the humor in AM sportstalk. There are alot of different hosts with alot of different approaches out there, you just have to find the one you like.

Hawk & Mariotti War Continues
QUOTE(WSNS-TV44 @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 11:46 AM) 1.Brett Farve and the Packers 2.The Patriots 3.The Red Sox 4.Duke Basketball You just listed his "model" teams. You forgot to add the Lakers, who he didnt really rip on much last year even though he had every chance to all year. Instead, Mariotti focused on how bad the Bulls were until it was apparent that they really werent bad. Also, the red sox are interchangeable with the Yankees. Mostly, he uses those 5 teams to compare all other teams to, and if they dont compare then Mariotti gets as personal as possible.

What About Mike Sweeney?
QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 11:42 AM) Why? Because he is in the division? Mostly. People have been trying to pry Sweeney from the Royals for years, and the Royals continue to blow smoke up his ass about seriously rebuilding, and he continues to buy it. Sweeney hasnt gotten the World Series "Itch" yet, and seems really happy collecting paychecks with a hurt back half the time and playing the other half of the time. Dont get me wrong, i would love to add Mike Sweeney, but I would think Griffey would happen way before Sweeney was even approached.

What About Mike Sweeney?
QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 11:40 AM) I heard Sweeney cleared waivers...how about him for our DH, and then Everett in the OF until Pods is back...and then we can platoon Sweeney and Everett for the rest of the year. Then next year, Sweeney is the DH or 1b. Thoughts? Do we know he cleared waivers? Again, this is what I heard. With all these damn rumors, I don't know what is true anymore. A pipe dream of the best variety, that is.

"The" Griffey Rumor
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 11:38 AM) I got this from a Reds board discussion: Lindner won't let KGJ go cheaply. The White Sox weren't offering enough before the deadline. If they give up Young, Rad, Hernandez, & Honel the deal is likely to happen. Would you do a 4-1 for KGJ right now? I would do 4 for 1 if the Reds were willing to pick up 15 million dollars on KGJ contract. If the number is less than that, then I wouldnt give up that many prospects.

"The" Griffey Rumor
QUOTE(RDriesen @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 10:04 AM) 2. dont you think the team is worth a lot more with griffey on the team than off it. you have to remember, lindner is all about the bottom line. hes only worried about making money, thats how hes managed the reds. he wants to make as much money as possible off this trade. Really, I dont think Griffey has had the star effect that Cincinatti expected. He hasnt taken them to the playoffs, and has consistently been injured. I think the Reds need to commit to Dunn, Kearns and Pena, and let Griffey walk. And this isnt the White Sox fan in me talking, I have thought this since the beginning of the year(not that I can prove it ) I do, however, think that the prospects they are requesting dont really make sense, or at least they didnt originally. I was thinking that they need pitching bad, but a 1B and OF? Dont really know about that. What does the average Reds fan think about this? Are they for or against it?

WSCR's continued fall
QUOTE(daa84 @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 10:52 PM) on the other end of the dial, mac jurko and harry continue to talk less and less and less about sports and more and more and more about pointless nonsense. thank god they still have the national guys mike and mike and dan patrick to carry them Well, yesterday MJ&H were talking about how J Hood may become part of ESPN 1000 soon. In fact, the impression that they gave me when they were talking about it was that it was a foregone conclusion, just a matter of time. J Hood probably has a 3 month no-compete clause he has to wait out, thats usually the standard. And on a personal note, I think MJ&H have been really good the past 3 months. Mac has been absolutely torturing Jurko and Harry about how bad the Cubs have been.

"The" Griffey Rumor
QUOTE(RDriesen @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 09:52 AM) he is an idiot, but as i said on the main board, that isnt the reason he wont trade him. hes selling the team and he wants to A. have the team have as much star power as possible to make more money on the deal and B. allow the new people to decide what to do with the players It amazes me that he isnt thinking of getting rid of an aging player with a huge contract, who really doesnt figure into the teams long term success. I would think that Lindner would be focusing on making sure Dunn stayed around, not Griffey.
