QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 27, 2018 -> 11:30 AM) At his age, I have full confidence he'll return. There's never a guarantee but I would bet one of Greg's houses on it. -
Those players arent even overhyped on soxtalk, much less the entire MLB

QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Feb 25, 2018 -> 09:49 PM) That is the counterpoint and a very legitimate one. Maybe I have too much confidence in JR's ability to sign a mega deal with a player like Machado or maybe I just want this guy on our team badly or maybe seeing Burgur's big azz running the bases scared me. Put Machado at third with the projected line-up we could have and the Sox start looking like a legit contender for a wild card in 2019. If you have the confidence he can sign him to the deal, then you don’t want to give up what Baltimore is going to want. That guy is not going to be traded for a song . I want him too, but I want him to be part of a larger puzzle instead of the main piece

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Feb 25, 2018 -> 09:06 PM) WRONG. The fans who die before the success will have regrets on their deathbeds. Gmab, we aren’t 88 years past a title. They won 13 years ago, get a grip

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 25, 2018 -> 09:24 PM) I do agree with all of this, but I also think most tank jobs don't look as pretty as the Sox does The sox fortunately had three extremely valuable pieces to kickstart things. Teams like the Cubs and Astros had to truly bottom out

QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Feb 25, 2018 -> 08:47 PM) Baltimore doesn't need Machado this season so I don't think they would be adverse to trading him. Maybe, just maybe, the Sox have enough decent prospects to make that trade without giving up (and of ) their top 5 or 6 prospects and impacting the rebuild. Perhaps it would take one of our roster players (Avi? Fulmer?) as part of a package for Manny. Once in the Sox fold, I think JR would be able to sign him long term. After seeing Burgur run out that triple like a fat-bottomed girl, I want the Sox to go after Machado like a beach. No. Do not give anything up for him when he can walk at the end of the season

QUOTE (WBWSF @ Feb 25, 2018 -> 06:27 PM) Rick Morrissey has a rather interesting column in todays Sun Times. He thinks this so called rebuild is just another word for tanking. He doesn't buy into this tanking. He thinks its bad for sports in general. I happen to agree with him. I think this White Sox rebuild/tanking is wrong. Well I know we all long for the days of 200 strike out years from Dunn and 75-80 wins, but hey what can you do QUOTE (wrathofhahn @ Feb 25, 2018 -> 08:37 PM) Not really seeing who you get back and watching the kids grow is a hell of alot more exciting then watching a team going nowhere I havent followed the progress of prospects and rookies this closely in my entire life.

FWIW there is no discussion about banning anyone right now. Being an Eeyore and saying the same untrue thing over and over isn’t a personal attack on anyone at Soxtalk. And I doubt Reinsdorfs feelings are hurt

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Feb 24, 2018 -> 11:42 PM) Instead of arming teachers, why not let the retired vets do the job? I bet they’d be way more than happy to each take a day per week protecting their community schools. Then we honor them and s*** and it’s all good. This idea is just crazy and I’m pretty sure you know that. Let’s put guys, many of whom already have problems with ptsd and issues integrating back into society, into a school with a directive to protect against a possible school shooter. What happens if one of them sees something that isn’t there and opens fire on the kids? Are we going to vet all of them for mental health? Because that seems to be quite an issue right now with normal people, much less trained war veterans. I don’t want my kids going to school where someone with a gun is patrolling the halls at all times comparing it to a war https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2018/02...rd-schools.html

QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 24, 2018 -> 11:21 PM) Differences of opinion make life interesting. Some of us are skeptical about the Sox front office. Being skeptical doesn’t mean you have to announce in every thread that you think that this will be the cheapest rebuild ever and JR is going to keep every dollar. It’s beyond ridiculous anymore and there is literally nothing backing up his claim

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Feb 23, 2018 -> 08:30 PM) Dude is a giant ass. Nothing to note there. It has become a different animal
-
QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Feb 23, 2018 -> 08:29 PM) See I agree with that. And that’s why I’ve advocated for signing a few guys now if the value is there. What’s the significance in waiting just one more year before starting to buy? Because you aren’t allowing players like Yolmer to show if they can actually be a part of this going forward because of a player like Moustakas
-
QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Feb 23, 2018 -> 08:12 PM) But if that’s the approach wouldn’t you want to make sure that guys like Moncada, Eloy, Kopech, and Robert both develop and stay healthy in the coming years before saddling your franchise with a $350M long term contract? I don’t think you will have clearly identified all the future roster holes within the next 10 months but yet are going to commit that type of money to a single player? You might have another 6 or 7 holes to fill through free agency in the coming years to become a real contender but your hands are tied once you’ve gone “all-in” on a $35M AAV player like Machado or Harper. I’ll keep saying this but I believe the Astros are the model franchise for this Sox rebuild. They’re most expensive FA signing on a AAV basis was Carlos Beltran. Develop and stay healthy? You don’t sit on your hands for years and make sure your players stay healthy. If they produce, you start to build around them immediately with the thought of playoffs(and hopefully WS). You go all in on Machado and let her rip And don’t confuse me wanting Machado with me thinking everything fails if he isn’t signed. If the Sox have to go second tier because the big four all sign elsewhere then so be it. But I’m not going second tier now
-
QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Feb 23, 2018 -> 07:59 PM) Why go all in next year then? Better off waiting until 2021 or 2022 to make all your free agent signings. I doubt all the guys you mention above will be peaking for another 3-4 years anyway. Might as well just wait to see what you’ve got if that’s the approach. Even next winter is too early. My approach hinges on the performance of the key players of the rebuild. If they all fail then of course we are f***ed anyways, but I don’t see that being the case.
-
QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Feb 23, 2018 -> 07:43 PM) Who said I don’t believe in the rebuild? Not believing they will sign Machado equates to not believing in the rebuild? I absolutely believe that they will make a significant splash in free agency in the coming years, I just don’t believe they are contenders for signing Machado. You want them to start signing free agents now, before they are approaching their window. We are one year into the rebuild and you want to start making commitments that could end up being a detriment later, with or without Machado. It’s like arguing with WBWSF about trading away Robertson. We don’t need these guys right now, you want to make those commitments next offseason when you (hopefully) have Eloy, Kopech, Giolito, Moncada, Lopez, Anderson performing well in the majors and the theoretical next wave of Burdi, Burger, Robert, Dunning, Cease knocking on the door. THEN you fill your holes
-
QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Feb 23, 2018 -> 07:37 PM) I didn’t say YOU were but many Sox fans are... If you don’t believe in the rebuild, that’s your prerogative. The Sox have already done many things that would be deemed out of character for this front office including trading away Q and sale for high impact prospects and signing Robert. I see no value in signing Moustakas as if he kick starts the rebuild into high gear. I think they are in the game for the big money players next season
-
QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Feb 23, 2018 -> 07:29 PM) I think it’s ridiculous that fans continue to obsess over the prospect of signing Machado next winter even though the odds of that happening are slim to none. I’m not obsessing, I just am not discounting the possibility

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Feb 23, 2018 -> 02:07 PM) You are being needlessly harsh bringing up Grady Sizemore. The whole argument from Lillian and others is that a long term high AAV contract will hurt future payroll considerations if the Sox want sustainable success and Moustakas may be a good fit in that 3rd base may be a harder hole to fill than others and also is a LH power bat which we also are in need of. He may also come discounted. Anyone who doesn't think a mega contract hurts roster construction and crippled other moves hasn't been paying attention. W all know the move is risky (not a crippling risk) but so are all the arguments I see thinking the Sox won't need to add a starting pitcher or a top bullpen arm or 2 and everything we need will come from the system or we can afford a mega contract. The rebuild has a slim to none chance of building a WS winner in the next 8 years or so because that's just how things go. The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry. I’m not being needlessly harsh, it is the same obsession without considering anything but the side the person hits on. This is ridiculous, Machado is an elite player and Lillian is trying to convince people that Moustakas is a better option because he balances the lineup. Moustakas is a stopgap, and nothing more. I have zero interest in the guy for many reasons, and none of them are money. The rebuild needs to continue with eyes to the future of players that fit into that window. You can tell me you believe the rebuild has a slim to none chance of producing a World Series winner, and that’s fine, but that doesn’t mean you start doing the exact same thing that got you into a rebuild which is add players that are past their prime and hope that they can somehow recapture a year or two within a long term deal.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Feb 23, 2018 -> 08:52 AM) I don't understand why some of you continue to completely ignore the issue of money. If you read what I just posted, I clearly stated the difference in the cost, as being a critical component of my preference. I said; "If you take the money out of the equation, of course I would prefer Machado, to Moustakas". Ignoring money might be excused, when talking about a few dollars, but not when it involves hundreds of millions of dollars. Come on, you can’t be seriously telling me it’s about money when almost every post in this entire thread you say you prefer a “left handed, middle of the order, power bat”. I mean goddamn, don’t try and change your position to make it look like you are hoping the Sox are financially more responsible when they will have a bottom of the barrel payroll when it is time to spend on Machado
