2006 Congressional Elections Thread
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 05:19 PM) Actually I posted on this last week. As part of the Help America Vote Act, the government undertook an outside study into what types of voting irregularities and voter fraud actually is discovered. The preliminary results are out, and the study is going to conclude that while examples like what people use to justify those ID laws, that there are huge blocks of people who vote who shouldn't be voting, is actually simply untrue. Current levels of enforcment of the laws have been more than effective in preventing those types of voting abuse, and in fact, they've been on the decline in the past several years. However, Absentee ballots are a much bigger problem, with much more widespread reports of vote-buying, voter intimidation, and double-voting due to them. Link. Quite literally, if you're interested in preventing voting fraud, you forget this voter-ID idea which there simply isn't evidence of a problem it is needed to solve, and you start pushing to reform or eliminate absentee voting. i totally disagree. they have already found around 20,000 bs registration card in Missouri. i don't trust this study you are citing. well, i have a feeling you'll change your mind on the ID issue once fanatic evangelicals start voting 50 times each to ensure their minority opinions are what drives the political landscape.

2006 Congressional Elections Thread
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 05:02 PM) And yet somehow, absentee voters showing up at polling places and voting twice or absentee voters being coerced are much more likely to happen than someone voting who is not actually eligible. how do you know this? you know exactly how many faudulent absentee votes are cast as compared to other types of voter fraud? you are guessing. but anyways, i'm also fine with making sure absentee votes are legit. just because there is an abuse in voting in a certain area does not mean that other areas should be ignored (obviously). QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 05:00 PM) I totally agree, as long as (again) some form of photo ID can be obtained free of charge. of course.

2006 Congressional Elections Thread
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 11:40 AM) Or you just have someone evaluate the voter registration cards? "We caught 1400 fraudulent voter registration cards. Clearly our system for catching fraudulent registration doesn't work." no. the ones they catch are small number of the total cases of voter fraud. In KC they have already caught around 20,000 bs registration cards. This is a big problem. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 29, 2006 -> 09:41 PM) Thank you for the information. Its a good thing some of these garbage registrations are being caught. I wonder how often this happens each election cycle, from ACORN and other groups. And further, I wonder what could be done to prevent such fraud? Photo ID required to vote and to register. Computerized checks of registered voters to make sure the same person only votes once and that "dead people and pets" aren't voting.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 28, 2006 -> 10:15 AM) Do you have any evidence whatsoever to support your paranoia? http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stor...5B?OpenDocument http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/n...al/15832172.htm ACORN has been doing this for a while. it's not really a "paranoid" theory.

"Death of a President"
i don't think it's really all that 'shocking'. i don't know why it's so controversial. it's just a movie, and probably a lame one at that.

Your ACLU at work again.
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Oct 25, 2006 -> 04:27 PM) You mean 60% of the houses in Downers Grove or any town in the USA. It takes like 30 seconds to setup WEP/WPA on a access point yet no one does it. On my block there are 9 houses with WiFi. I am running WPA2, the guy next to me is running WEP, the rest are wide open. "i luuuuv free internet"

Your ACLU at work again.
I am against government regulation of legal internet content. but i do see Nuke's point on this issue. If the FCC relaxed rules and USA network or CBS decided to show XXX movies many would rejoice, but most parents wouldn't. i doubt the argument "just block the channel" would work too well. if ISP's were smart they would offer packages that came with software to block pornograhpic sites. a lot of parents do need help when it comes to monitoring their kids internet viewing. in many cases the kids know more about computers than the parents. i don't think it would be bad if the government offered free porn blocking software and had a website explaining the whole process.

Describe your ideal President and Representative
- end lobbying/bribing - more money towards technology advancement, less on blowing up camels in the desert. - end racial prejudice in public university admissions - technology infrastructure enhancements - protection of free speech and religious exrpession - don't apologize for ending communism (communism killed more people than even the nazi's could ever dream of) - curtail drug war - strictly enforce laws against hiring illegal workers - fix our education system, not throw more money into a failed system. - enhance military defense and intelligence capabilities - enviromental protection - drastically reduce dependence on foreign energy - stop race baiting and class warfare - lower middle class taxes - balance budget - make mr_genius vp - improve foreign relations - change foreign policy away from being "world police" - continue tough fight on terrorism (and no, invading countries like Iraq doesn't mean "tough fight on terror")

Flags Of Our Fathers
QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Oct 22, 2006 -> 06:24 PM) "Who needs to be seeing the uppity negroes fighting when we have a segregated white power structure to uphold. i know you're trying to be sarcastic, but Nuke didn't post anything like that in this thread or any other thread that i've read. what exactly is your point? The army was segerated and we all agree that was bs. But if there is going to be a historically accurate film about WWII it shouldn't show black soldiers making up an noticeable number on screen just my opinion of course.

Detroit Tigers World Series Thread
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Oct 14, 2006 -> 11:11 PM) I'm for the AL and particularly the AL Central, and am still a Magglio fan, so go Tigers. They are handling these playoffs like the White Sox handled last year. They really were the best team in the AL for most of the regular season, so its very fitting they are the AL representives in the Fall Classic. Good pitching and a few homers puts you in a pretty good position. i agree on all points

QUOTE(bunkerf16 @ Oct 14, 2006 -> 08:24 PM) You guys crack me up..........our team is extremely young at the core.....we have players in the minors who are ready to come in and pick up the slack........we will be active in FA and with a team like ours, and with the manager we have, we'll attract our share of talent....... It's sad you can't just congratulate your opponent without trying to tear them down....sounds a lot like sour grapes to me........guess that's to be expected though..... i hope the Tigers win the world series AL central represent!

Article about Mariotti from Chicago mag
QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Oct 13, 2006 -> 09:58 AM) Jay is an incredibly talented writer who has every right to voice his opinion. i agree with you that he has the right to voice his opinion but he is not a talented writed. i find his writing style to be juvenile and sappy. his only real talent is his amazing ability to toally piss people off.
