Bill Wirtz Passes Away
What's odd is how behind the times their front office is... I would know, I interned there two seasons ago. They have ONE paid person behind their marketing, they have one person for PR, and like 12 total paid upper office management types (and I'm being generous here.) I had to teach their head of PR (I won't name names, but it wasn't who's currently there now) how to use Microsoft Excel... she got the boot during my tenure, but man, that says something right there. I also find it funny that they didn't bother to broadcast home HD games last year (or take the hit and lug the HD on the road)... high-definition is the single-greatest marketing tool that hockey can use, because it makes such a HUGE difference in presentation, more so than any other sport, imo.

NFL Network: Griese in
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 02:04 PM) Didn't you just say, two pages ago, that Grossman never starts again for the Bears? Perhaps, I do know that I said that when I was certain the Bears would do the smart thing and downgrade him to #3. EDIT: i had the disclaimer "unless Griese gets injured" on there, which actually takes most of the finality of the statement out of there. anyway, does everyone here realize that Brian Griese has the 17th best career QB rating of all time? just a little number that doesnt mean much but it means something.

It takes nuts to write an article like this... good for him! I now heart Ray Slover link

24: Tony Almeida to return!
QUOTE(retro1983hat @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 10:31 AM) I heard this as well. I love 24, but last season kinda sucked for me. Hopefully Tony will return, although he is a flaming Cub fan. He was behind home plate for the World Series in 2005 for FOX and wore a Cub hat. My wife almost threw something at the screen when she saw it. I respect that more than if he were to pu ton a Sox hat just to be a poser.

A school dilemma with my son
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 11:23 AM) I wore a Cubs shirt Monday and don't know why. I'd say its because you're a huge tool.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 08:48 AM) I'm thinking about doing the same, since my QB is Drew "I f***ing suck as bad as Grossman" Brees. And I have Larry Johnson. Can you say the two biggest fantasy busts this year? I'm thinking anyone who drafted in the top 3 is having a real b**** of a time this year... with LT, Jackson, and LJ all sucking.

I love freaking Tony! This will make up for the horrendous season 6. LINK

Bill Wirtz Passes Away
Hip, hip, hoor... oh wait, that's not nice. Seriously, Dollar Bill was a big part of hte history of the NHL, and I'd be sad to see him go had he let loose the reigns about 10 years ago. It's unfortunate that this is what it takes to get the Hawks home games on television (if it even happens) so we'll see. My condolences to his family, and I pray Peter is a smarter businessman.

Cedric Benson and Rex Grossman both suck
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 06:35 PM) It's not just PR-Wise...the Bears right now have the lowest amount of cap space in the NFL this season after signing Vasher and Tillman to extensions. Until we move onto next year's NFL calendar and start talking about next year's cap, the Bears literally could not have signed him. well, seemingly if you sign him, you could cut rex, correct? eh, i dont know how the financials work, ill take your word for it.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 06:15 PM) I am certain that comes into play. In my fantasy league, I'm playing against an incredibly woeful team this week, so I picked up Brian Griese for a spot start. It's a joke that might pay off for like 10 points... haha.

Cedric Benson and Rex Grossman both suck
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 01:42 PM) I don't think this Organization can possibly go with Orton and Griese as its only 2 quarterbacks going in to next season. You have to sign or draft or trade for someone. However, assuming the Bears do not acquire a current NFL starting QB (i.e. McNabb) this offseason, I think you try to give Orton some reps once games are over or once the season is decided to be a complete loss. Possibly even a start or two if things wind up really bad. Then, you call it open in training camp next year, between Orton, Griese, and your rookie, and whoever earns the spot gets it. They will draft someone in the second round out of a small school (think a Charlie Frye type)... their first rounder MUST go to O-Line. I know they couldn't PR-wise, but Byron Leftwich would have been a nice retread to try to fix here. I wanted him bad coming out of school, and I really don't see how he can already be considered a bust (aside from injuries) when he played with a pretty woeful receiver corps and managed an 80.5 QB rating (not hideous). I think with reliable receivers that completion percentage would have soared past 60... anyway, that's a different discussion altogether.

QUOTE(SoxFanForever @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 05:54 PM) Can't you buy a LaPointe jersey instead??? There is no one that I hate more on the Hawks than Martin LaPointe. It stems from being an intern there 2 seasons ago... bleh.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 06:08 PM) I do hope this isn't a one and your done move. He's got to be "the" guy for at least the month of October. It's going to take at least a week or two for his game legs to get under him. We can't judge him on his next 32 attempts. I can't think of a team I'd rather he start off against than the Detroit Lions.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 05:45 PM) I neglected to mention my Steve Sullivan (white) jersey and I also bought a Russian Anton Babchuk (former Hawks first rounder traded for Dan Richmond) jersey. I'm not too embarrassed about the Sullivan jersey -- I love tiny guys who manage to dominate their sport -- but the rest are looking crappy. My only hope at this point is Ruutu. Yeah, understood... it just sucked that the hawks of course got rid of him the MOMENT he would have needed cash. I remember Babchuk well, it was just two seasons ago. Of course, my next purchase will probably be a Toews jersey, hahaha.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 05:31 PM) For the record, here's the jerseys I've bought: Marcus Robinson Anthony Thomas Rex Grossman Tuomo Ruutu (he's pegged for a big year but I'm sure he'll score 15 and get hurt) Joe Borchard From now on I don't think I'll buy any current-player jerseys. Ouch, that's a tough run, I think i can match you though... Curtis Enis Anthony Thomas Mike Brown (I never get to enjoy this, though I guess it's still current) Steve Sullivan Ron Artest (BULLS) Tyson Chandler Brian Anderson I have an Urlacher jersey too, thank God, and a Sox jersey with my last name on it because I'll always be with the Sox, lol. I do plan on getting a Garret Wolfe Bears jersey, but that's because I went to NIU while he played there, so it'll stay cool forever to me. Other than that, I think I'm done, I've (as you can see) obviously been burned a few times. As for Griese, he did quite well in 2004 with a less than superb supporting cast around him in Tampa, so we'll see what he does this weekend.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 05:06 PM) Career ratings are less meaningful without looking at the trend. 97-79-62 isn't very encouraging. I say go for it, but to predict he's noticibly better next week is a stretch. You're seriously going to count the 32 sporadic attempts he had with the 2nd team last year? Howsabout we do complete seasons? 76-103-79-86-98

and to those of you who think this is temporary... Rex Grossman won't start another game for the bears unless Griese gets injured (and I think Orton might be #2 on the depth chart tomorrow)

NFL Network: Griese in
QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 04:44 PM) Considering my brother is a diehard Michigan fan, and Griese was his favorite player to ever play football, I've seen a good majority of his starts in the NFL. He just isn't the same player after his knee injury, and if we think he's going to be able to avoid the rush better than Grossman, we're in a lot of trouble. Like I said earlier, Turner did a pathetic job of letting Grossman go downfield in order to get a big play/penalty. You mean the knee injury that ended his 2005 season, after which he has yet to be a starting quarterback of an NFL franchise? I'm sorry, but do you have a personal spot next to Lovie for practices? Give me a break, and give Griese a shot. His two years in Tampa were quite productive before the injury (97.5 rating in 2004 and 5-1 record in 2005 before injury)...

NFL Network: Griese in
QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 03:37 PM) The big issue is that Griese just isn't good. I put a lot of blame on Turner for not going deep enough this year, especially to Hester. It seemed like the Bears excelled last year when they could get the deep pass going, and it never worked out well when they would try to run it twice and then convert on a pass on 3rd and 6. Now that Rex is done in Chicago, and Griese isn't special, I really hope we're not anticipating Orton being the starter in 2008. Hey Mr. Pessimism. How many career starts of Greise's have you seen? Oh less then 10? Wait, less than 3!?!? Wow, at least you know what you are talking about. As I've touted countless times before, Griese is an improvement over Grossman, as you can plainly see with his 84.5 passer rating compared to Grossman's 69.3 rating. Griese also has a career TD/INT of +24 (on some rather bad teams, fyi), while Rex is a whopping -4. To say Griese is not an upgrade is to spout uneducated post after post after post.
