scammer Sarah Phillips via deadspin

QUOTE (zenryan @ May 2, 2012 -> 09:59 PM) a person claiming to be a girl starts posting on a major sports betting forum(covers.com).Tons of guys start fawning over this person when this person starts using pictures of a hot blonde. Covers.com starts pushing her on the front page as some contributor to the site. Basically every day they would feature an article on the front page with "her daily picks". She gets tons of guys gushing over her and sending her money. Covers "silences" anyone who questions this Sarah J Phillips person. Gets huge following and ESPN hires her as a freelance writer without ever seeing her. Only cared about her popularity. Able to scam even more people now. ESPN tries to save face once deadspin releases this story. Ends up firing her yesterday. How does this happen? I mean, I get the blogosphere and the intercelebs, but, um, ESPN, owned by Disney, hires someone without, like, a DL or an SSN, or SOMETHING to prove legitimacy? -
Chipper Jones would not be denied there. I see no reason why he'd retire after this year. He is ridiculous.

The White Sox had a chance to sell Matt Thornton. Much like they had a chance to sell Bobby Jenks. They did not sell Bobby Jenks and wound up getting nothing for him. They have yet to sell Matt Thornton, and they will wind up getting nothing for him as well.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 2, 2012 -> 04:57 PM) I fixed that for you as you are agreeing with Strangesox, Balta and myself, who said that concussions are a factor. Steve's position was that concussions were not a factor at all. He flip-flopped about half way through and tried to argue that he really meant to say that concussions are just a factor, but no one was ever suggesting that concussions were the only factor. (Edit) Saying concussions are the only factor is just as silly as saying concussions are no factor. Which is why so many people were outraged by Steve's original comment that concussions play no role and he doesnt believe in them because other celebrities commit suicide too. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?s=...t&p=2588817
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 2, 2012 -> 04:08 PM) stuff NFL players don't have a higher rate of suicide than the general population.
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 2, 2012 -> 04:04 PM) I just dont think you should ignore these studies like Steve is doing. Hes basically arguing that science can never prove anything, thus we shouldnt rely on science. The "science" you elude to is not conclusive and certainly not expansive. Keep it up though, because I clearly stated "science does not exist, I love the Bible" and nothing like "other factors could be the root cause". s***, sometimes people are just crazy.
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 2, 2012 -> 04:02 PM) No one has said this. You said that it was bulls***, dont backtrack now, stand by your statement. Nothing about my statement said that CTE is bulls*** and does not exist. Christ, read words. I pointed out that many other factors can cause depression.
-
I would like to add that I do not believe you should stick to rocks, it's just annoying to be misunderstood. I was stating, apparently poorly, that many factors can go into this, and automatically assuming CTE is the root cause of all evil is an overreaction and misguided.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 2, 2012 -> 04:00 PM) Why? By your own standard, finding significant brain damage would be unimportant. You are so black & white it's ridiculous. Stick to rocks.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 2, 2012 -> 03:56 PM) (arguing against Steve's point that it's all about NFL players leaving the sport). uh - my point is that there could be many factors for depression, and the bandwagon to jump on ANY FOOTBALL PLAYER THAT KILLS HIMSELF HAS CTE AND DID SO BECAUSE OF IT is stupid, and I certainly look forward to Seau's autopsy findings.
-
60 percent of NFL players = concussions. That has to be exponentially larger than the general population - yet the depression rate is the same? Tell me more please.
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 2, 2012 -> 03:35 PM) In case you dont trust the ACC, Michigan did a study that shows on average NFL players suffer depression at the same rate as the general populace, once again suggesting that it is concussions that are increasing the depression rate amongst NFL players, not their fall from the spotlight. But shouldn't that rate be higher given the fact that NFL players suffer concussions at a much higher rate than the general populace? Conclusions are being drawn.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 2, 2012 -> 03:48 PM) Under what reasonable standard could anyone's response to yet another incident in a person who played that game be "it's just an excuse", with that statement basically used to justify continuing failure to respond proactively to this brain damage? There have been nearly 30,000 players in the NFL, and 6 total cases of CTE have been diagnosed. Now, obviously, many of these guys are still living, and many did not have their heads examined post-mortem, but I would imagine a lot of conclusions are being drawn about a disturbed man who killed himself.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 2, 2012 -> 03:43 PM) You realize that you just responded to a pair of statistically significant studies saying that there is a huge increase in the rate of depression directly associated with concussions with one anecdote saying "no there isn't", right? I realize that everything is not black and white. How about you?
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 2, 2012 -> 03:35 PM) Yes there is no evidence that concussions cause depression. There is no evidence that it is solely to blame for these guys offing themselves and/or being depressed. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/22/sports/f...of-it.html?_r=1 But yes, tell me more about your definitive proof that concussions are solely causing these issues in football players, while they are nowhere to be found in other celebrity circles. These guys spend 30 years getting their dicks sucked constantly, and then *poof* no one cares.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 2, 2012 -> 03:28 PM) How on Earth can you possibly say that when we have the damaged brains actually sitting there in medical facilities after having been examined? I'm saying CTE certainly cannot be the sole issue to blame here.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Red Sox will sign right-hander Mark Prior. Prior hasn't pitched in the majors since 2006 and was limited to just 12 innings in the Yankees' farm system last season due to a wide variety of injuries, including shoulder discomfort, a groin issue and a bruised forearm. The 31-year-old required sports hernia surgery during the offseason, but he's aiming for one final comeback.
-
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 2, 2012 -> 03:09 PM) s*** needs to get done ASAP about head injuries in football. I really think that this whole concern about head injuries in terms of causing these guys to be depressed and off themselves is a bunch of bulls***. You see this everywhere with people who fall from fame - they don't know how to deal with it. You see child stars, actors and actresses, musicians, it happens in all walks of "celebrity", and that's really what I think should be to blame. To hell with any brain damage causing these guys to lose their s***.
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 2, 2012 -> 12:32 PM) And that is the type of s*** I cant stand (And Im not even talking about your stupid grammar comment, I dont use contractions while posting on message boards, I dont waste my time worrying about internet grammar police.), sure it sucks Rose is injured, but posting "depressed" every other hour is just annoying to read. I do sincerely apologize for not wallowing in pity and crying about how everything is lost. That just isnt me, it wont ever be me. You pick up the pieces, you move on. I'm depressed about the Derrick Rose injury. Given the scope and hope for this year's team, it ruined sports for me for a bit. It makes me sad. I know you don't consider yourself a huge NBA fan, so maybe that's why you don't really understand how incredibly huge this injury was. If he pulls his groin again, ok, you shelve him for the series. Having an entire season wasted by an injury that might threaten Rose's career is just awful. I'll b**** about it all I want. I will also b**** about you and your "If the Bulls just start hitting their shots with more consistency, they will score more" type of posts! I probably just need to avoid the thread until the Bulls are unceremoniously removed from this tournament, as I'm admittedly not adding anything.
-
Contractions are difficult. I will cry all I want, by the way. This is the most deflating injury in Chicago sports history as far as I'm concerned.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 2, 2012 -> 12:09 PM) If a team scores more points than their opponent, they'll likely win the game. The Bulls just need to play basketball better and outscore their opponents--this will likely lead to success. so perfect

Your posting style lately is driving me insane. You make obvious statements and act like you're a genius.
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 2, 2012 -> 12:03 PM) Most NBA teams will lose if the other team shoots close to 60%. Thanks for the info, dad.
-
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 2, 2012 -> 11:44 AM) Rose is a terrible PG who can't defend, shoot or go left. Right now, that's a pretty accurate statement.
